  1. Adopt GCC extensions? on Intel Releases V6.0 Compiler Suite · · Score: 2, Interesting

Interesting to see their compiler supports GNU C extensions. Usually it's the other way around, free software keeps implementing undocumented extensions. At least the GNU extensions are useful (like 0-sized arrays), and well documented.

It's also interesting that they wrote their own compiler, instead of patching GCC. GCC also works on Windows and 3.1 already has optimizations for different CPU extensions to x86.

They also wrote a new debugger (LDB) specially for Linux, although they claim it implements only a subset of GDB, so what is it for?

And to compile the kernel...who will do that? Is there some server vendor planning to sell Intel servers with such kernels on?

Yast, the SuSE installation program is not free, and does not comply to the Open Source definition. Remember that when choosing between SuSE and other distros.

  3. disable system services on startup on Linux Tuning Tricks? · · Score: 3, Informative

On RedHat, you can use ksysv, the init editor, to turn off boot-time system services that are not needed. Candidates are daemons for GPM, USB, SCSI, LPD, APM, which are all enabled by default, and which may not be needed.

  4. 24 FPS != millisecond precision on LED Lights: Friend or Foe? · · Score: 0
According to the graphics on page 2 in the paper, the optical signal from the LED changes several times during one millisecond. Videocameras only record 24 images per second. You'd need a pretty high-tech optical device to even see the LED blinking.

Strange that they say such detection does require little apparatus.

  5. preferred form for making modifications on Abusing the GPL? · · Score: 0
The source code for a work means the preferred form of the work for making modifications to it.

That is from the GPL. Obvious "incomprehensible gobbledygook" is not the preferred form of the work for making modifications to it. It is not source, because it is never modified. Admitted, the GPL is not very clear about what excatly constitutes "source," but this company asserting their obfuscated code is their source which they make changes to shouln't hold in court, in the case if the copyright holders want to pursue this firm. I wonder if the software in question is copyrigted by the FSF.

  6. latency? on Modem Accelerators? · · Score: 1, Insightful

Even if this was possible, compressing text files, or removing whitespace from HTML, latency wouldn't change. In many situations, latency is more of a concern as simple "speed". If you're using Emacs over SSH for example, each character that is typed needs at least the minimum ping time to be displayed, regardless of compression.

  8. Apple bias on Slashdot? on Apple Announces Open Source Design Award · · Score: -1, Offtopic
Doesn't someone find Slashdot has sort of an Appe-bias lately? It's not just the new section apple.slashdot.org, just look at the ten new apple topics on the topics page. The new topics are:
    • Desktops (Apple)
    • iMac (Apple)
    • Media (Apple)
    • Networking (Apple)
    • OS 9 (Apple)
    • OS X (Apple)
    • Portables (Apple)
    • Technology (Apple)
    • Utilities (Apple)
    • Wireless (Apple)
Of course Linux has much more (all the distros), but still. BSD is one single section.
Also the new theme. I find it cool, but there could also be a new theme for other sections. There may be many iMac-fans here, and even one of the editors (I think) is an Apple fan, but why so much new sections at once?
BTW, regarding that Linux v2.5.5 has not been annouced, maybe a linux.slashdot.org section would be appropriate, maybe with a cool new "Linux" theme?
