...and yes, I know that Napster has been--uh, how do I put this nicely--"out of action" for some time, but it's still sad to see the thing go. Napster wasn't just the first and most important P2P service; as people tend to forget, it was also the one that worked the best. The Fasttrack network has yet to really live up to its promise (it's fine for searches of things that are popular on the network, but anything else tends to be more trouble than it's worth), and Audiogalaxy--in my eyes the most promising of the new networks--is of course no more.
I can't help but view Napster's real death as something of an omen. The original is gone, but at this point, a quality replacement is still hard to find.
That's all well and good, but the idea is that the mono version of the album is usually a completely different mix from the stereo. The Beatles, for example, were releasing unique mono-mixes of albums all the way up to (and including!) the White Album, which in its mono incarnation features a host of differences. The more complex a record is, the more different it's likely to be in its mono incarnation.
The Live at Leeds releases were a "debacle," but for another reason entirely. The original CD wasn't all that hot; the 1995 remix/remaster with extra tracks was, IMO, a *huge* improvement. What makes hte current "Deluxe Edition" so awful, though, is that it actually sounds quite a bit worse than both the '95 issue (on the tracks it duplicates), completely re-organizes the concert, and sounds crappier than most bootlegs sourced from the material. Oh, and did I mention that Roger overdubbed several MORE parts for the reissue? It's just nuts...things aren't supposed to get worse-sounding as time goes by, but unfortunately, technology can be both used and abused...
I realize I'm coming in late in the game (and I don't know whether this has been mentioned yet), but this is some rather hideous marketing on EMI's part. To elaborate:
a) This album has been released countless times on CD. The RCA issue, the original Rykodisc, the Rykodisc "Collector's Edition," the gold Rykodisc edition, the "regular" Virgin version, and now this.
b) Apparently, the bonus tracks are mostly stuff that has been out before. On the above mentioned Rykodisc versions, most of David's albums came with bonus tracks that were cut for the recent Virgin reissues. Apparently, these "new" Ziggy bonuses are mostly comprised of those tracks, with a few things from the Sound and Vision boxed-set thrown in. There might be a few new items, but I doubt that they're many.
c) Another remastering? The regular Virgin issue isn't all that hot (no-noised, and subjected to the Prism noise-shaping system, which I've always felt adds an odd "texture" to the sound), so I can't imagine what they've done with this one. Possibly brutalized it and re-recorded the bass and drums (yeah, I'm talking to you, Ozzy).
This is an older issue. The newer Virgin CDs don't have copy protection, but they ARE "Enhanced CDs," which can cause some configurations to puke, I suppose. (FWIW, one doesn't play in my car stereo about half the time).
We hear so much (and, logically, experience so much) regarding spam in its email incarnation, but what about the new, even-more-obnoxious variants? I speak, of course, of random IRC spam (most of which are porn-related, but I've seen the "travel package" ones as well), AIM spam, and the old standby of Usenet spam. While much is said about spam threatening email as a permanent communications medium, not much attention tends to be lavished on these abuses of other, usually less-controllable communications media. Little Johnny only has to open an AIM account to start receiving unsolicited IMs from "Maggie 03421."
It is nice to know that despite the preponderence of computers in animation today, something that's this "old-school" can still occur (albeit online-only, I guess).
Now, I understand what these services are striving for (and I hope this hasn't been mentioned in the previous discourse), but...
What's to stop me from using TotalRecorder in tandem with these.nap files to record to WAV? Unless the system has some way to ensure that I'm not intercepting the audio (or unless TotalRecorder is somehow made illegal and erased from my computer by Giant RIAA-controlled EraserBots), the "protected-format" issue should be a joke to circumvent, no?
I have to wonder if anybody else feels this way. When I get "hit" by an ad that's particularly obnoxious, "stealth"-like, or anything of the sort, I make it my business *not* to buy the product. Advertising has its place in society, and I think few would dispute that (Well, few of us greedy capitalists, anyway), but I'd really prefer that it keep its distance. If x10 insists on being that wholly obnoxious with their advertisements--or if I see ANYTHING of the sort passed off as "news"--well, fine 'n dandy, but I'm sure not buying that product.

Additionally, the very thought that the fact that blank CDs are outselling prerecorded CDs means anything is hogwash.
Blank CDs can be bought in spindles of 50 for $18.99 in some places. In some mall stores, you're lucky if you can buy a *real* CD for $18.99. Added to the fact that blank CDs have a multitude of uses beyond that of music copying, and it's no wonder that they outsell "conventional" CDs. Pity the RIAA doesn't expect people to do any of their own thinking...
Now, of course, many CDs in their original longboxes are worth small fortunes...check eBay if you don't believe me!
In all seriousness, though, I believe record companies stopped using longboxes because it was just as inconvinient for them as it was for the consumer...the gradual shift over to jewel-case only packages came as record bins were modified to be specifically for CDs.
....this is very, very typical of how members are instructed to react to ex-members.

You claim that your family loves you, or something to that effect. Do
you have anything from your husband stating that he still loves you
despite the fact that you deserted him?-- for that is what you did.
Are you still living together? What does your son have to say about
you? -- and please post evidence of your assertions. Do they know you
hang out with kooks and criminals all day long? Do they read your
Magoo postings? What do they have to say about that?
Come on, fill us in, Tory. ARSCC is just one big family and no one has
secrets here. You've shared so many other heartrending "secrets" (or
so you claim) it shouldn't faze you at all to open up about what's
going on behind the scenes with the Bezazians.
Now don't just give in to the usual compulsion to lie. I think it's
important that you 'fess up to this, Tory. Try hard to avoid the usual
cop-outs... "OSA agent," "clam shill," blah-blah-blah...
Fact is, I was on usenet long before you learned to negotiate a
keyboard. I was around when the first alt. group was formed way back
when. (Do you even know what alt. originally stood for?) I would also
advise you to avoid flame wars - you're clearly not used to them.
There are days when we can barely recognize you for the soot on your
face. Even your staunchest "defenders" know it, but they'll allow you
to think otherwise for the moment. Poor little Tory, so pathetically
gullible. They'll continue to squeeze you like a lemon and then cast
you aside when you have no further worth. No one thinks you are a
particularly clever person, Tory. No one. Without at least the skill
to hold your own on ars, they'll have no use for you. You'll just be
this hanger-on who trips over her tongue and embarrasses them. Bob
will distance himself from you. The money will stop. You have no
career skills and, aging the way you are, you'll soon end up wandering
the streets of California begging for a quarter to buy yourself a donut.
And there will go Tory, broke and abandoned, but "free at last."
