The point of my post was to point out that the writer of the article in question either doesn't have a clue or is blatantly lying. Longhorn not being compatible with all previously released Windows software (not just MSFT) as the article implies would've made HUGE headlines and Longhorn would turn to be one of the biggest flops in history of IT.
That's bullshit. Take a closer look at the article. It has so much disinformation it's not even funny.
The successor to Windows XP (due in 2004, and rapidly slipping to 2005) is currently code named Longhorn, and it will not be compatible with your existing software, hardware or methods. Microsoft has already stated that backward compatibility will not be a design feature.
The article said there would be benchmarks of UT2003. I click the link and see a single screenshot of UT2003 running. No benchmarks. Where are they ? Am I blind ?
3DS Max like to keep it's registration information in the boot-sector and of course it's ONLY compatible with the Windows bootloaders.. This means that if you have a dual-boot system with Linux using GRUB to boot Windows, the moment you register 3DS Max from within your Windows install, your bootloader will be practically wiped out. If you reinstall the bootloader again, 3DS MAX will complain that you have to re-register and obviously, if you do so, your bootloader will be wiped yet again.
"All the anti-MS cases so far have focused upon the fact that Microsoft bundles software with its OS. There is another, more serious matter going on though: Try to buy an A-brand laptop these days without Windows. It is virtually impossible."
Has it ever crossed your mind that the reason for this is not an evil conspiracy, but the fact that there is simply not enough CUSTOMER DEMAND to make it reasonable ? That's not fine with you ? Write to the OEMs and make your Linux-using friends write to the OEMs. Maybe this could change something.
This flamewar once again shows the arrogance of the MPlayer developers:
> A user who can install a working xine package in 3 clicks won't care it runs > 0.001% slower, if it just works. A user who wants a movie player to install with 3 clicks can go use windows.
> Mplayer has unique features some people want to see in Debian, but if the > legal status is still unclear, it just won't be done. Full stop. Cool, at least we won't have to listen to the bugreports of binary package users.
> Oh, yeah, you must think people wanting to use mplayer should make the
> effort of building it themselves, being rewarded of their efforts by > having a working video player. I know our opinions differ here, but YES.
> Then you are just a fucking elitist. Unfortunately not, I only want to be:)
Those are just a few quotes from Gabucino, an MPlayer developer posting to debian-devel...

So a person goes and STEALS music. He gets sued and has to pay money / sit in jail. What's wrong about that ? If you start seeing people who get sued for downloading songs they ALREADY OWN, then raise hell.
Pardon me, but if using short product support policies is "microsoftish", then Redhat is more microsoftish than Microsoft itself. Last time I checked, support for Windows 95 was dropped on December 31 and support for Win2000 will be dropped in 2008. That's 8 YEARS per product with a possibility of extening support for corporate customers.
I do not recall Redhat supporting any of their distro releases for 8 years.
Gentoo is not for everyone. Debian is not for everyone.
This goes on to prove that the Linux folk have to do lot of work in the standartisation department. "Hard to install apps ? Install Gentoo/Debian !" Riiight...nevermind the fact that a newbie will be scared shitless the moment he realises there is no hardware autoconfiguration whatsoever, he has to create his own XF86Config and compile stuff from source.
That's yet another problem. WHY SHOULD I HAVE TO RTFM ? In Windows, I can double-click the installer, "Next", "Next", "OK" adn it's done. Double-clicking the video will now open the file in the newly installed player. No downloading of fonts, no compiling and no RTFM'ing whatsoever.
You shouldn't even bother compiling the GUI into mplayer!
So I should solve the problem of ``crappy GUI'' by replacing it with ``no GUI at all?'' I should use the program only from the command line, or by memorizing magic keystrokes? Awesome idea.
In case you don't get it, that was sarcasm from the author and I tend to fully agree with him. Why do I have to specify a video output device in the first place ? Why can't it figure out the best one to use on it's own ? Fullscreen ? Oh great, so now I should watch videos in EITHER fullscreen OR not, but I can't switch back in forth without closing down the player and opening it again (when using the CLI). Welcome to 1990 !

I see people saying that now Lindows is trying to play like it's a bid bad boy because they are supposedly popular. I want to understand how is that possible. When I browse the web, chat on IRC, participate in mailing lists, I see folk using all kind of distros. I see people using Redhat, Mandrake, Xandros, Debian, Slackware, Gentoo and god-know-what. But what makes me wonder is that I am yet to hear of a SINGLE PERSON actually USING Lindows for purposes other that reviewing.
Can anyone provide any factual numbers of the amounts of Lindows users compared to the likes of Redhat, Debian and the like ? I am very interested.
The partition which contains my MP3's can ONLY be written to by root and not any regular user under which file sharing programs operate (I am not stupid enough to run Direct Connect et al as root). To top that off, the integrity of my entire filesystem is verified by integrit and I get reports about changes made to my filesystem by email.
This is bullshit, pure and simple. How can they claim IP infrigement in Linux if Linux was all about writing a UNIX-like OS *FROM SCRATCH* in the first place ? There is no SCO-owned IP in Linux and there cannot be. Case closed.

Yeah, riiight.

Heh, the first QuickTime movie that MPlayer fails on me with :(
Starting playback...
mjpeg: JFIF header found (version: 1.1)
mjpeg: unsupported coding type (c2)
VDec: Codec did not set sh->disp_w and sh->disp_h, trying workaround.
Error while decoding frame!04 ct: -0.000 3/ 3 0% 0% 0.0% 0 0 0%

etc...
My MPlayer Mozilla plugin refuses to work with this. Can anyone provide any alternative download URLs for the videos ?
Thanks

I beg to differ:
Quake source (GPL)
Quake 2 source (GPL)

Doh, I should correct myself, apparently you CAN go "back and forth" between a fullscreen and non-fullscreen modes by using the "f" button.

Works here (in Finland) well enough. I'd say 99% of my messages reach their destination.

GNU = GNU is Not Unix
Duh.
that the article in question is about girls not going into CounterStrike and not Computer Science ? Damn those titles can be confusing at times :x
The next thing you know, you won't be able to use non-Ford and non-Toyota gas with Ford and Toyota cars respectively.
Look into "Synaptic".
