to analyze radio transmissions from space. If there are other lifeforms out there, what are the chances that they would be on the same technological level as us? Considering how briefly we have had RF compared to the "cosmic big picture" I find it doubtful we would be on the same wavelength. (please pardon the pun) Even if we did receive a broadcast, how many years would have passed between the time they sent it and our reply would be received? Their "equipment" would probably be ancient by that time.

  2. This is just what we need... on Virtual Reality With Unreal Tournament · · Score: 1

Lately, all I've been hearing (outside of the Slashdot loop of course) is stuff like "What's the point of having all of this speed" and "Who needs all of that disk space!". Why can't VR be the next big thing(tm) again? Most newer computers have enough oomph to make it work. Personally I would love to see VR pushing the computer industry out of it's rut.
It looks to me like small size LCDs manufacturing is being ramped up, especially since digital cameras are becoming mainstream.(unfortunately the resolution of these would pretty much suck at 1"-2" from the eye) I bet if a gaming HW company designs a device capable of a stereo view and head tracking along with a high resolution eyepiece and a reasonable price. ($500 for first gen, and down to $200 consumer levels) It would take off like a firestorm.

Great, now the MPAA'll figure out a way to cut the power to pirates' houses, all in the name of copyright law. (On the plus side, I could make a fortune by investing in UPS companies!)

Have you tried using a RAM drive? You should be able to save the source or output on it. (Of course if you loose power you're boned) It's been a long time since I've had the need for one, so I can't remember the name of the proggy. You can probably find in on tucows, or another shareware site.

It's too bad there isn't such a thing as a "capacitor" for CPU cycles. It would be neat to store up unused cycles and blow them all at once on a Photoshop filter.

Someone will have to sell the raw material that will be used to create all this stuff. Having only one supplier for everything though would create quite a few problems.

There's one thing I don't understand about this... What would be the advantage of waiting until the last minute before autorotating? You would have a greater vertical speed to compensate for at that point wouldn't you? I'm certainly no physics major, but it seems to me that it would be just as effective at ANY altitude. (Meaning someone will still need a spatula to clean you off of their driveway)
