The talent is still there, So, keep expecting
great "hacks" from them, albeit affordable ones
-- no more dough to lift a cop car.
Expect something like.. a coin trick.
As a/standalone/ programmer/designer/analyst, I
developed this API design philosphy on my own.
Actually, I have evolved to it.
If you are in a one-mans shop, or do alot of coding
for a specific domain, try to roll out your own
layer of helper APIs on top of the system provided ones.
I work on win32 and ODBC: I have my own class
hierchies of *standard* dialogs for DB applications.
Ex: the ActiveX components for DB Appz (advanced
list views, financial stats, bar charts and graphs, etc.)
are really resource greedy (the updating required
for a dynaset database connection, with millions
of records being fetched per minute is very
expensive.)
So I wrote some ready to run classes, that take
care of the interface (with all the company logos
and standard look-and-feel stuff.)
then wrote some other classes to wrap around the
"CResultView" classes, and finally,
wrote some classes that *know* about our strange
servers, and are optimized for them (including
a connection "language" I derived, which is nothing
more than a hand optimization of the subset of
SQL accepted by oracle.)
So, if the shop is good to you, be good to them
and put your talent to work.
The API method works, and I am a living witness for it.
Seriously, I salute the man for standing up for his
principles, but I don't think his "pre-judgement"
should receive such an attention.
He already works for a corporation, if the new
parent company promises to continue supporting the
spirit of the old company, and remains commited to
open source, then ACs comments are unjustified.
Atleast in my humble opinion.

Hmmm, an OK graphics API with sound and input-devs
support, not bad, but we can catch up with OpenGL
and alsa.

Wait a minute? Did you say IE? if so, then I will
take your "DirectX" to mean "ActiveX".
They are different technologies (actually, ActiveX
is one application of COM.)
We already have a decent browser (actually, half
a dozen at that, just counting the engines; the
GUI are even more.)
> Come on guys, nobody cares about CORBA.. [snip]
WHAT?
CORBA and COM are workalikes. If COM gave win32 its
seamless desktop experience, the CORBA (actually, subsets of it.)
are giving Unix desktops that very integration.
Or is it only cool when they do it?
Remember how the HP-compaq acquistion shook us for
days? I personally couldn't beleive it.
Now, for FreeBSD to go from hand to hand, that easily,
and to end up at fbsdmall (of all the arms out there.)
I think the dollar value of fbsd is somewhere around
1200 dollars.
If I sell my 89 VW Fox, I might own FBSD (AYFBSDABTU)
Before you flame, I am posting this from a 4.1 stable, Ok.
In my facist startup, we pass "speech"[1] in napkin notes, rot-13ed!
It is a risky business, and the unfortunate[2] ones
end up in the server cell, with nothing but a terminal over null modem, and `tail -f/var/log/messages`.
