I have been using Edgy since Knot 3 was released and what I have found is that there is no more use for applications like easyubuntu and automatix. Most, if not all of the applications installed by those utils are now included in the Add/Remove list. Yay.
You would probably find that there was some legacy maritime law that could be applied to the whole scenario. As it is, it would be a great idea to start selling off chunks of the moon to people and then using the funds raised to improve the technology that would actually be used to get people back there and set up colonies. I'm sure something similar has been done in the past for another project, though memory fails and google is too many clicks away (besides which, if anyone knows about this, its/.'ers). Of course, the first people there (probably the US) would stea^H^H^H^H claim the best slices and areas with the riches deposits of whatever may be deposited there. And rightly so. Though in this kind of thing, I'm sure it mostly boils down to finders keepers. In fact since there is no real space-law to speak of, the fact that the US was the first to plant a flag on the surface of the moon probably entitles them to sole ownership (which will no doubt be pushed by the first US corporations to start mining the moon for those "isotopes". Until the ghost of Gene Rodenberry becomes the father of the new "Federation", its seems thats the most likely scenario. Though perhaps we shouldnt fret too much, there are many moons in the galactic ocean so to speak.
Disclaimer: I am not an America, I am an African, and we will probably only get ourselves a space-program long after other countries like Afghanistan and Khazakstan are well on their way to cutting their own slices of the moon-cake.
On another related topic, when on the moon, which way would Muslims face for their prayers? (Not trying to flamebait, just a thought after I recently finished reading a short story in the Mammoth Book of Extreme Science Fiction.)
We can expect to see him simulate a viral attack, this will envolve him formatting his hard drive while running IE, removing it and hitting it multiple times with a hammer.
Im not sure what we can expect from that, but I sure cant wait to see!
I agree totally and welcome our new bacterial overlords.
Science, particularly in the US, seems to be slipping back into its old habits. Dogma reigns supreme and dissident voices are quashed without cause or concern simply for going against the norm.
A friend of mine used to argue that science was no different from religion, and scientists a new breed of priest. I hated his argument, but lately I have had to question how valid that may be.
The question to ask then is, why would life on Mars recieve such scathing denials from the scientific community? Who benefits from from perpetuating the belief that there can be no life on Mars?
Surely if one applies occams razor to the question, we must believe strongly in the possibility that Mars does indeed have the capability of supporting some forms of primitive life. This is especially easy to believe when one considers some of the habitats where life has been found here on earth. Buried thousands of meters in rock, volcanic vents 6Km below the suface of the ocean and boiling lakes of acid...
Seriously, who cares what the acronyms stand for, they generally stand on their own. What percentage of IRC users know what IRC stands for? Does that stop them from using and enjoying IRC or even http for that matter?
Besides all the embarrasment they cause for the 3 people who actually worry about acronyms causing confusion, what would the solution be anyway? NOT using them?
Hey dude, I will catch you on Internet Relay Chat later. Or we can Instant Message.
Just to pick up on one of your points, the in-house applications. Not only would those be a huge problem for companies wanting to switch from Windows to Linux, but it would also be a huge problem when it came time to give up the desktop and switch to the Microsoft approach in the article.
My first thoughts were that this system could actually work out quite well for a company, but what would happen to all of the custom systems they were running? Lets face it, a company with 45,000 employees is almost guaranteed to have some COBOL or FORTRAN somewhere. I have personally seen some very large companies with billing systems written 10 to 15 years ago, the reason they havent updated them, simple... They work. And companies like things that work.
The other problem is that most people are still on modems if they even have an internet connection, and the fact is, that isnt going to change any time soon.
My gran is 82, two years ago, she got a computer which had Linux installed by default. She uses it everyday to type letters to her grandkids and shopping lists. She doesnt have a youtube account yet, but who knows.

Will the Martians welcome their new human overlords?
Two words... Case Modders.
The most accurate results may come from google. Its about as ubiquitous as it gets and everyone and their grandmother uses it.

Disasters do not unmake presidents. Neither do setbacks like this.
Only blowjobs work really well.
In short you are a Transhuman, Immortalist, Extropian
You are the very model of a Singularitarian.

My time on IRC has taught me a valuable lesson... On the Internet, all the men are men, all the women are men, and all the children are FBI agents.
Dont believe the hype!
Wow!!!
Im going to need some more tinfoil!
but does it come in black?
Hmmmmmm, demolicious...
So basically its like a crappy MSN?
What the hell is AOL?
No really...
Good point, I cant disagree with that.
I suppose a lot of it also comes down to what we want science to tell us.
1. Men have a higher IQ than women on average... Yaaaay.
2. Methane on Mars is NOT from farts... Boooo.
Of course, this is just my opinion.

Wow, I totally screwed that up. Serves me right for having two /. stories open at once.
My comment actually relates to the article about Ray Ozzie.

Off topic, but I have to ask, which browser DID have the most critical security issue?
Wow, can you imagine a Beowulf cluster of those babies!?
But if you aren't upgrading to Vista for the eye-candy, then what ARE you upgrading for?
Will it run Duke Nukem Forever?
