  1. Re:Agreed, Completely Biased Benchmarks on PC World: Apple G5 Gets Trounced By Athlon 64 · · Score: 1

When you read the article, you'll see that NOT ALL of the PCs were running with RAID arrays and not all the PCs had video cards with more memory than the G5's.

    For example:
"We retested the Alienware Aurora with the 128MB Radeon 9800 Pro card and without RAID for more-direct comparison with the G5 systems."

The Alienware Aurora Athlon64 with the 128MB video card and no RAID array still "trounced" the G5 in EVERY test (including photoshop.) It even outperformed the DUAL G5 in every test except for photoshop, where it was not far behind.

Also worth noting is that the Polywell Polystation Two was running with only the 128MB video card and without RAID. It managed to outperform even the dual G5 on the photoshop tests.

What does this mean? I dunno. But I do consider the test to be much more fair than many are giving it credit to be.

I believe the service you are referring to was called QuantumLink. I remember I got my first modem (300 baud) for free when signing up. It had some chat stuff, a few games, and some stripped down online version of the Encylcopedia Britannica you could access.

And the Graphic Environment Operating System was good stuff at the time!

A good warning - the microdrives seem to be a bit flakey.

I also have a G1. My microdrive (I've had the 320MB one for 14 months or so - and the 1GB version was available then as well! What is with this "news" story showing up now??) has given me lots of problems. It works very well sometimes, but often it just produces tons of CF card errors.

An important thing to be aware of is that IBM changed the microdrive around November of 2000. They lowered the RPMs but increased the density. Despite lowering the drive's speed, because of the increased density the actual transfer speed was increased slightly, and the drive consumed a bit less power, ran cooler, and seems to have become less prone to errors. My microdrive is the older version and is likely why I've had problems with it.

When the newer version came out, those lucky enough to receive one (around November 2000, you didn't know which one you would get when you bought it - they carried the same part numbers, same boxes; only the physical appearance and markings on the drive itself differed slightly to the outward eye) reported having no problems. I'd bet your friend has an older microdrive like I do, and you have the newer (still more than a year old) kind.

The A300 B4-600 is one of the specific planes mentioned in the document in need of modification.

    This from cnn.com:

"Carty [American Airlines Chairman and CEO] said the last maintenance "A-check" on the plane was performed Sunday. A heavier maintenance check was done October 3, and the jet's last major overhaul was in December 1999. Another overhaul was scheduled for July 2002."

I'd speculate that the modification referred to in the parent thread would be done during the overhaul scheduled in July 2002, which is within the 18 month period the modification must take place. According to the above from cnn, no major overhauls have taken place since December of last year, which was prior to the issuance of the modification requirement. Again, I'd speculate that the modification wouldn't be done during a maintenance "check".

But of course that's all worthless speculation. Regardless, the link is interesting.

  7. Re:Not just annoying on U.S. Logo-Free TV Broadcast Organizations? · · Score: 1

Ummmm.... No. The burn in problem is still alive and well. The poster was talking about rear projection TVs for one thing. Logos that are omnipresent and are not transparent enough will cause burn in on projection televisions if they are tuned to the same stations for a long period of time. Commercial breaks do help, where the logo is temporarily taken away, and the phosphors of the screen are given time to cycle. Even the black bars present on the left and right side of wide screen HDTV rear projection TV's, when watching 4:3 content, will "burn in" over time.

Sufficiently transparent logos, which allow the multiple colors of the content "behind" them to show through, shouldn't be any problem. But a number of stations use bright, non transparent logos.

And if the television displays the station number continuously, like a logo in the corner, it too will cause burn in on a projection tv. It's not more likely. It's equally likely.

The same is true for CRT video projectors - the other example the original poster gave.

In short, you don't know what you are talking about. The original poster was exactly correct.

Also, it's interesting to read how the bill evolved... It started off so broad as to not specify that the games being regulated were those played in public places. Then after that was changed, the regulation was expanded to include not only the simulated shooting at human like targets, but also games that depicted shooting at "civilian transportation services, including, but not limited to, representations of cars, buses, trains, aircraft and commercial and residential structures." Also, at one point a version of the bill was written to include an additional penalty to the $1000 fine for the arcade owners: confiscation and destruction of the "video simulator" and this persisted until the clause appears to have been removed immediately prior to the final version that was passed.
