I'm reminded of the saying, "With great power comes great responsibility". The growing conundrum is, as technology continues to advance (and outpace our social maturity) it puts ever more powerful tools in the hands of the common man; thus the increased likelihood that we're going to see more abuses and injuries.

These days it's not too big a deal to do what you and I have done and just shave our heads, which is a cool look, but 20 years ago, that was a bit of freakish option. The thing is, it's not just a matter of personal vanity; there are studies that have shown that people who are balding typically don't earn as much as full haired peers, and are treated and viewed differently by others. We're something of a vain society and so it negatively affects other aspects of a balding man's life, including making a guy look much older than he is.
It can adversely affect your love life too : I suspect a lot of women are more attracted by a guy with thick full locks than a guy with a shiny pate and a fringe of hair. Most women will claim it doesn't matter to them when pressed on the issue, but I think it holds more weight than they're willing to admit. It just messes with self confidence, feeling that you're not looking your best, so even if women don't care, a guy might feel they do. Balding can close doors in your face- or at least, I should say, it used to. Again, with the modern popularity of the shaved head look, though, I think it's impact is much reduced. I rather like my Mr. Clean look now.

I gave up last year, and just shaved my whole head. Done. I hate that look like you're wearing a public toilet seat on your head, AKA the horseshoe. Now, I'd prefer a full head of hair (I love hair) but since I was losing it on top, I decided to get rid of it all - all or nothing. I wish I could've done that 20 years ago, but back then, a fully shaved head was still considered a bit freakish, ala "Mr. Clean". Nowadays it's pretty normal, and that practice is probably here to stay.
I've wondered if alopecia isn't a continuation of human evolution; we've shed most of our body hair, but why would we keep so much on our heads? Maybe it's the last bit to go?

How many slashdotters are boycotting products made by those evil corporations who pollute and slave drive? Not many I'd wager. We still buy all that stuff, creating and supporting the demand. We, or our kids, or both, all have our iPods and mp3 players and smartphones and flatscreens and computers and laptops and tablets and televisions and Nikes and everything else that is made in China, Taiwan, Indonesia, Pakistan, or any of the other industrializing countries that have cheap manufacturing run amuck. Ownership of the latest tech toys or "in" clothing becomes a status symbol that 1st world consumers are not willing to sacrifice.
So being part of that system, we're all just as much to blame as the Chinese or the American corporations, but it's always easier to point the finger entirely at someone else.

Maybe the Kindle is easy on the eyes (it does appear to be the best of it's class IMO).. but for a few weeks I had a Sony ebook reader with the touch screen, and it flat out sucked, a tiny, poor contrast screen. And (IMO) nearly all ebook readers have too small a screen (except the Kindle DX), or too large a font, even at that smallest setting. I want to be able to read more than two small paragraphs a page. But probably more importantly to me, the Sony, known for it's supposed compatibility, wouldn't display several to most of my PDFs. That's my main issue with eBook readers. I don't care about current best sellers, et al, I have an existent PDF library I want to take with me to reference. So in my case, I'd prefer a tablet, even a cheap one, and then the fringe benefits of a tablet sort of seal the deal. That said, if Kindle DXs were cheaper and in color, I would probably settle for one, but for $379.. I'll take the cheap tablet.

At this point in my life I don't really have a friend that could adapt to my schedule and I tried working out on my own: it was awfully boring, incredibly boring. So now I'm not exercising at all because I *know* it will be boring. Any piece of advice to share?

Besides trying other sports, (good idea), if you wanted to stick to just the gym, keep looking for a training partner. I know that can make all the difference in the world. Keep looking for someone, but in the meantime, you could try changing your exercises to make the workouts a little different and more interesting, and less routine. F'example, one chest workout might be bench press, incline press, and flyes; but the next time, do dips, cable crossovers, and use a pec deck. It ain't much, but it might help til you find someone. (IMO it also helps to be less boring if you belong to a gym that always has a few "gym bunnies" present)

It is hard to get started, definitely. You keep asking yourself, "Why am I putting myself through this?", it's hard and it's boring. But once the results start to appear, it's a whole different ballgame, and you not only look better, you feel a lot better; you carry yourself differently, self-confidence goes up a few notches, and even the lifting itself feels different, due to the increased proprioception I imagine. Plus there's the post workout endorphin high you mentioned.
The only difficult thing for me is watching the diet. I have no problem eating healthy foods; however, I love my beer and mead too. I'm guarding against the dreaded spare tire, so it's weekends only for that now. That's the tough part.
