... I don't know what the worlds obsession with blogs is. I suppose it caters to the same people who like to read other peoples diaries.
Pretty soon at the rate things are going the internet is going to be changed to the BloggerNet... bleh. I couldn't care less what some jackhole down the street has to say in his blog, 99% of what I've seen in blogs is pointless drivel (yesterday, hehe i went to bandcamp whee, look at my personality test results.) I've been guilty of blogging but I'm not proud of it.
I knew the world was coming to an end when I read that some companies were paying people to blog. Thats beyond ludacris.
"Bennie Smith, the online advertising network's privacy chief, said the popularity of tools like Adblock -- an extension to the Mozilla Firefox browser -- which makes blocking online ads simple was tied to 'a negative vibe against advertising in general'."
THANK YOU CAPTAIN OBVIOUS!
Duh, ads suck for a multitude of reasons... the one that annoys me the most is the fact that most load off another server... which half the time acts like its on a 56k modem being slashdotted, thus preventing the page from loading correctly.
Not to mention the annoying flash and flashing animated gifs and stuff are enough to make anyone buggy. I long for the days of simple banner ads and lack of advertising which takes up 2/3rds of the page.
Damn, wish i could have edited my previous post...
Basically when someone is living in poverty they're going to be more likely to do something "wrong" that increases their job satisfaction, income, etc... it's one of the reasons when you get a government security clearance they check for outstanding debt, recent bankrupcy, etc.
Couple an extremely low income with less stringent laws in procecution of crimes like this and what do you expect to happen? Is it a shitty thing to do? Yes. Is it justified? No. Does it really shock anyone who thinks about it for five secnods? No.
Yah that was pretty much my thought too, who cares if the damn thing can calculate how to avoid an asteroid careening towards earth, the important factor to measure is compatability with first person shooters. I mean the physics thing isn't bad, it's just secondary to the truely important feature of all computers.
hey everyone you better leave BSD as it has a stupid comment as follows../* Does this belong here? */ ---
> I agree with TFA that someone submitting code > and asking in the comments whether this even > belongs there speaks for itself about the > quality and the overall design of the code.
and since it's open bsd and linux that has it (and probally both free and other bsd's) that means they're all bad quality code right?
*chuckle*
I find it humorous that TFA called his own os's code crap basically. Open mouth insert foot no?
I've seen comments in Unix on par with:// this is fucked up but it'll work for now.// no, this isn't the right way to do this.// don't bother trying to read this, it's// intentionally obfuscated. If you can't read it// you dont need to know.
or my personal favorite// commented code// replaced with more efficent code// commented code 2// dont fuck with my code moron i have it this way// for reasons you can't grasp. original code
those kinds of comments concern me alot more than a simple "should it be here?" type thing and imply much larger problems communication (and when I say Unix earlier, I don't mean bsd kernels or anything like that, this is just things i've seen in various projects I've worked on in Sunos a few years ago.)
... but that's really not an excuse to act like that. If LT talked like that I'd seriously consider finding a new OS. It speaks of bitterness and an attitude that goes back to an old school unix bred elitism that i've not seen in years... and certainly not from anyone in the Linux community.
If OpenBSD wants to know why it's not as popular as it could be, I don't think they need to look any further than Theo's attitude.
The *BSD community hasn't ever supported the hardware *I* use as well as linux does. Shrug. The line I like the best is... the part about the comment saying "Does this belong here?" by a kernel hacker... realistically what was he asking?
Should this code be here? Should we be doing this in the kernel? Should we be doing this in an alternate part of kernel?
Becuase someone posts a comment in source questioning something doesn't seem to me to be a problem, it's there for a reason... a good reason would be to make other hackers take a closer look at it and make decisions based on it.
I'd rather that than have the entire race wiped in one big firey inferno. Just cause we got philosophical differences and aren't part of one "nationality" doesn't mean they're not part of us. Humans are fragile relatively speaking, us first getting off this planet if only to the moon and then later getting out of this solar system should be our goals. It's a bit out of reach presently but should happen well before my life ends (providing of course i live to a realtively normal age.) It's a real pity all the countries on earth couldn't get their shit togeather and word togeather to get a project like that underway, we could do it with global support in a fraction of the time it will take with one country or two trying to do it.
I'd disagree, most people drop out not because school is difficult but because it's the first time they're away from home and they've never learned to control themselves without supervision... not stupid, just immature. Personally i stopped attending college after the 7th or 8th computer teacher who I had to teach about computers.
I wish every user *would* do like I do and block the ads. I remember the web when there *weren't* ads. Then I remember banners, those weren't bad... then the banners became popups... then popunders... etc... it only keeps getting worse because people are willing to put up with it.
You're absolutely right, I don't support even half the sites I visit... and given the choice between paying for any of the those sites that I haven't donated to and not reading it, I'd rather not read it. I pay for sites that are *worth* something to me, sites i feel have gone above and beyond and provide something worth paying for, I read alot of sites to blow time... but I can do that equally well mudding, programming, chatting with friends in im, email, etc... and beyond paying for a connection to the internet (which you can get freely) those are all free. The web shouldn't be why?
... actually see ads anymore...? I universally block them across the board, most people do I think. Been quite a while since I saw one.
I donate to a couple webcomics i frequent (somethingpositive.net most recently), but there is no reason I'll look at ads at any site. If i want a product-- i'll look for it. I don't like, appreciate, or accept people throwing commercials up in the middle of my relaxing online browsing experience.
Privoxy+Firefox+A few manual blocks = no ads, ever. Also manages to take out about 99.99% of the virus crap that shows up for other people.
I've deployed linux as routers a few times and for the most part in days past your opinion mirrors mine. However kernel 2.4 and 2.6 have greatly improved the useability of linux as a router. They're about on par now with low end hardware networking devices from the bigname companies... they still can't compare to a "real" router though... maybe someday-- after we geta way from moving parts:)
There are some intersting things you can do with linux as a router that you can't do with a hardware device though. Shrug. Flexability for stability. I've always deployed linux as a router in a fallover configuration, if at any point the first router goes down, locks up, etc... the second takes over operations inside a second or two and notifies me. It's kept things stable in situations where things could have gotten really ugly really fast (hard drive failure, dead ups, nic failure.)
Also alot of the problem I've seen with using a linux box as a router comes from the fact people tend to toss "eh, whatever" machines out to do the job, very few people actually BUILD a pc with use as a router in mind... it's an after thought. Designing with use as a router in mind lets you make some wise choices and decisions that you might otherwise miss (redundant powersupplies, lockup detection hardware, raid 1/0 with 10k sata drives (helps with swap and boot speeds), alternate methods of doing init (multithreaded), etc..) shrug.
But mhz to mhz no linux machine is *ever* going to touch a hardware solution... course you don't see alot of 4 processor 3ghz routers with 4g of ram either.

How about "lower wages in a country with less stringent laws regarding theft of confidential information" == "higher risk"
"We're relevent damn you and your free browser that is as good as our paid browser!"

True, it also shows how far out of touch with the real world the media generally is to assume they wont get *SOME* vandalism.
... want a nice big mainframe in my closet running linux.
The mere thought makes me wet whenever I say, "Linux Mainframe"
Linux Mainframe... ooh.
That's already happening, alot of people who offshored early to india now offshore to the ex-russian countries.

We really do need to get our collective asses spread out to several planets at the least and preferably several solar systems.
One nice meteor and splat we're toast... or someone with to touchy a trigger finger.
The more we're spread out the safer we'll be.
*rofl*
That was probally the worst scene the whole movie. Just sad.
