The PaceBook ships with no handwriting recognition software
Yes, but later on, page 7 (don't you hate wading through all these pages?):
PlaceBlade claims that they are working with a 3rd party software company to provide handwriting support out of the box. When PaceBooks will begin shipping with this software is still unknown but the lack of handwriting software is a major thorn in the PaceBook's side.
PaceBlade claims that the IR keyboard will work up to 15 meters away from the system. To prevent the problem of having more than one PaceBook in the same room, each system can be set to look for IR input on a unique channel (1 to 255). This means that, in theory, up to 255 PaceBooks in a room at the same time working away on keyboards wirelessly.
They do not mention encryption, however. Without that, wouldn't this also mean that you could then snoop on those other channels, even without a wireless keyboard of your own? Me no like.
But alas, while the Environmental Protection Agency would grant the Hawaii Department of Agriculture emergency temporary waivers to use caffeine as a pesticide, the EPA required that the infestation sites be monitored before and after application of the super-coffee, which had to be administered by trained, certified pest applicators.
Attention Slashdot administration, this is your cue to insert a helpful banner ad here.
The Girls' Guide to Hunting & Fishing is actually a pretty good book. Not sure it has anything to do with Douglas Adams, though. BTW, the title is not literal.
Yes it is a good book, but anyone using it as a textbook would likely find very poor results indeed.
Yes, but it is too bad that they are not taking payments currently as they are migrating their system. Looking forward to when they come back to life again.
I think they will send payments not only to performers but to songwriters as well, should you choose to include a cut for them as well. And they have a Winamp plugin to keep track of the worthy ones based on what you listen to.
Has anyone tried putting FreeBSD on one of these? I wouldn't expect the modem to fare any better, but it would be interesting to find out whether the rest of the package came up successfully.
The Swing Connection ought to be careful in the future not to infringe on the author's sideways look and feel concept.

is the picture of the 10 GHz ALU test screen here. I just like the way they have the Windows Calculator next to the test screen, in order to check whether 2147483646 + 1 really is equal to 2147483647.
This will be a whole lot cooler when the flexible media is mounted on a flexible substrate. Otherwise it just looks like another 5cm square LCD display, with low resolution. It should not be too hard to use that flexible plastic they use inside photocopiers to print circuits onto, I should think.
When that happens, I predict that the first commercial application will be in advertising.
Maybe they mean "Mega-DVD" to connote that it has the capacity of a million conventional DVDs. That's more along the lines of the blue-sky exaggeration which is the stock in trade of marketing managers.
A real marketing manager would describe this product as a "Terabyte-DVD"
Try maybe a "Terabit DVD." That way you could even have ads with Elmer Fudd in hot pursuit of "de wabbit."
The idea of a API which provides a way to hook into whatever provider exists on a platform reminds me of the SAX XML event-driven interface. Right now it does not seem to provide much that an effort to port Tkinter to the "minor" platforms might give you, but maybe in the future it might be able to let a GUI app query the underlying provider whether certain capabilities (e.g. bitmaps on buttons) are supported and make intelligent choices based on that information.
How about if we established a group of white-hat hackers to whom one could submit the details of an exploit. They could attempt to confirm or repudiate the description of the problem and try to assist in developing security patches, without releasing the details of the exploit to the world at large. Then after a suitable time for the patches to be applied, the full story could be told.
It looks like a nice unit, a combination of my VisorPhone (alas long departed) with the keyboard of my Motorola text pager with my Visor Platinum. The only big flaw to me is the loss of the Springboard slot - Handspring's FAQ indicates that they intend not to engineer this in to the Treo in the future either.
can't use Graffiti with keyboard version - there is no built in Graffiti *at all* with this version, not even a pop-up Graffiti window. You have to download a third party tool to do this. What are Handspring thinking?
I think they are thinking that people jonesing for graffiti will use a third party application/hack to use the full screen for handwriting recognition. Or maybe voice recognition will really take off now.
Well, Keir Dullea would be more in keeping with the movie motif, wouldn't you think? Plus if the station encounters a floating monolith he'll know what needs to be done then.
When I was a grad student, there was a seminar entitled "Are some stars older than the universe?" The punch line which came to mind then was that yes, obviously there were - Ronald Reagan for one.
Reagan as one of the First Ones. It makes me feel all prickly.
No doubt there are any number of capable computer scientists in the Middle East and Central Asia whom these groups can turn to in a pinch for technical assistance.
They could post their encryption concerns to a site http://slashdot.af/index.pl?section=askslashdot for instance. But I don't think the Taliban would let them call the intellectual currency "karma."
Are you crazy, man? The waste these things put out is none other than dihydrogen monoxide! Thousands of people have been injured or have died from exposure to the stuff every year!!!
It looks like a cross between a mouse and a hovercraft.

After reading the lawyerese on that form, I just like saying:

in the Four Noble Truths. Does anyone know if this is GPL-ed?
Yeah, well, if you think E&M is the whole thing. There are three other forces out there, you know.

Does this mean videotape, or is it a typo for VH1?

I followed one of the links off the isbn.nu page and discovered that according to this link, people who bought "The Salmon of Doubt" also bought:
Would you believe it?I just like the sheer quantity of misconceptions in that list item listing. Caveat Lector

Damn, I spoke too soon. Here it is after all.
From the article:
Wait a minute, the source code for a hippo is available? How come I've never seen this here?
