    Apparently you were in such a hurry that changing the file extension was too much for you? I'm sorry, I meant the Document extension. You know, your text Document has a name, and after the dot...oh, your main OS hides file extensions? Never mind, I can see that it is too complicated.

    It is funny that you seem think that word processors and spreedsheets that look somewhat alike must be copying from Microsoft, since Microsoft didn't originate either type of application..."rip off" was a little extreme, and lotus couldn't make the look and feel arguement stick. Hence, the "rip off" is now the standard. In terms of Microsoft Office being garbage, I think "garbage" is a little extreme. Still, it isn't best of breed.

    What the fuck does "free as in beer" mean?

    It used to be that on election day the political machines would send men out to all the bars to buy everyone beer to toast their candidate. The idea was that the free beer would lead them to vote for the guy. Since there is an implied obligation to vote their way, the beer wasn't really free. This is then contrasted (in the "free as in beer or free as in speech") to freedom of speech, which is obviously a different sort of "free". Likewise, "Live Free or Die" doesn't imply life without cost, but rather the cost of living free.

    It only allows one snapshot, but can't you copy that snapshot to another directory? Make another snapshot and it will overwrite, but your saved snapshot is there is you want to bring it back. Sounds like a simple bash script to cp to backup, and mv from backup (and maybe list the various snapshots in backup) would give you the same functionality.

    Actually doubling the national debt is significant. The only economicly responsible administration we've had in terms of actually reducing the debt also had the largest peace time expansion of our economy, and that wasn't the GOP.

    Well both Flex's IDE and OpenLazslo's IDE are Eclipse based, so I'm assuming they *could* converge if people wanted to the OpenLazslo's IDE to look for Flexible...;-)

    OpenLazslo uses the Common Public Liscense (CPL). Isn't that incompatible with the GPL? Could/would OpenLazslo ever be dual licesnsed to be GPL compatible? Does the new and improved GPL beta indicate the CPL will still be a problem for GPL developers?

    "When he talks about sharing with Linux, he means developers, not code." Developers, developers, developers -> means applications, applications, applications. Mindshare matters, and Sun is desperate to get in the flow on a winning side. I suspect this is merely a test: running the flag up to see if people salute or blow raspberries. Does anyone know the numbers? How many developers does Sun have? How many volunteered after they formed their closed "open community"? How does this compare with the number of GNU/Linux developers?

    Plus, the parent had the shoe on the wrong foot. Microsoft has been found in the wrong, and Microsoft has been told how to get out of the hole they find themselves in. "If you can't reverse engineer a protocol given ...blah blah blah". MS has to make this info available to get out of the hole. It is not enough for MS to give the EU materials that *should* make a ladder that MS can use to climb out. It is up to MS.

    It is hard to take seriously anyone who stipulates that national interests should and do trump the rule of law and justice. I suggest your take on history is as skewed as your ethics. I happen to remember those days.

    The advantage of the open source model is that modifications are made that fill niches. It is the "scratch-an-itch" mode of development. Thus, you need to look to niches where security matters, such as the NSA. Also be aware that open source means that if you care, you can do a software audit. You can't audit Excel. "No credible security expert says that Open Source is inherently more secure." At the same time, Linux can be much more secure than MS Windows, and linux can be modified to be used in secure areas that wouldn't pass Windows.

    It is not arbitrary if it increases value.
    Value depends on many factors, of which cost is only one.
    It is not stupid to increase value.
    We have yet to see if Microsoft can have Taiwanese officals eliminated, as they can in the US. It is too early to suggest "no problems".

    It shouldn't be an economic decision. Things that occur are news, and the recording of these facts are the basis of history. To moneitize history, even the history of mere sport, is against the public interests. This is clearly the sort of thing that requires protection.

    Where are the public domain sound and videos hiding? How about theGrateful Dead? I found that through Public Domain Movie Links.

    The interesting thing is that the Grateful Dead is available as a streaming MP3, but in the comments section people tell you how to save it. Note: the Dead not only let people record shows, but would even offer technical help.

    "Currently, neither broadcasts nor websites do enter the public domain,"...It is (now) only copyright that prevents someone from recording and distributing a broadcast. When the copyright expires on the broadcast, why doesn't it go into the public domain? How this is different is that you not only have to get the owner of the copyright's permission, you also have to get permission from the broadcaster, who would be extended rights equal to copyright. This is *not* rights attributed to "creation", but rather rights associated with owning the channel through which the material is broadcast.

    They are starting with audio and images, so in its current incarnation your text wouldn't yet partially belong to slashdot (but in version 2.0, who knows?) What this means is that if you post a picture of your cat somewhere, and lose the original, you can't just copy the online image without permission from whoever is "broadcasting" little fluffy to the world. How the hell would they know, though? Are they going to watermark this material?
