one of the largest (if not the largest) net BBS in the UK uses NetBSD on a lot of it's machines. it performs very well. they also use OpenBSD on some too i think, running on Sparc and X86 hardware.
indeed, and one BBS thats very much alive is Monochrome. i've been there since my poly days (thats 1991) and its still going strong. check out here. and no i am not a staff member, well anymore;)
yeah they were called PC1640 over here, we got one as our first PC. interestingly the power unit was in the monitor! it was fun using GEM Desktop on it!
we upgraded the hell out of that machine! fitted a 30MB hard drive (on a card!), 3" floppy drive, joystick interface. it lasted a long time... even got Windows 3.0 on it... running in CGA mode.... *nice*.
there is a radio & computer rally at RAF Cosford next month i think, i can't remember the exact date... sometime in september anyway. you should be able to get plenty of junk... i mean digital heritage there
they are not doing too badly, they are making a profit and keeping staff while companies like Dell are shedding 1000s. anyway i thought monopolies were bad;)
running X on OSX is rather painless anyway (and runs fast... far faster to load than bloody Classic anyway!) but to be able to run the apps without X can only be a good thing. i suspect people won't really get that excited until some nice apps start appearing.

you probably don't wanna move but here in england java programmers are very much in demand (or at least were when i was looking for a job a few months ago)... java java java, unfortunately for me the only java i know is the lovely island;)
think what kind of mindset and character you want in your sysadmin... patience, calmness in the face of crisis, attention to detail, able to plan. try and ask some questions to get an idea of this.
technical information can be learned reasonably easily but some things cannot be. when i was interviewing people i looked for people who had a genuine interest in IT too and how easily they could pick stuff up, and how well they could manage a number of concurrent tasks.
well thats nice but not exactly insanely great. it goes well with an iBook. but as i got no firewire enabled macs i'll have to give it a miss.
just to tell you one good use of NetBSD

i love the song personally, but then again i
love music like that so perhaps that is what it
depends on.
unfortunately in the commerical world such things no longer seem to matter. money talks.
why? its just a name, they could call it the Athlon Banana if they wanted. whats important is how fast it runs not it's handle
just giving someone a computer doesn't make them computer literate. i think it all will depend on what the computers are used for.
isn't that what i said?
frankfurt and vienna are in different countries
if web developers had bosses who would be professional enough to let them embrace standards properly we might start to get somewhere.
after i read this i wish i hadn't chosen to wear all black today!
not mentioned here so far but i thought it was interesting ;)

hehe yes, being able to freezeframe that pic was a major reason i got that film on DVD ;)
useless why? no old computer that works is useless, as long as you have an imagination.
indeed SEs are very plentiful, but look out for Workgroup Server 60s... much more rare ;)
