    I don't see that anyone's mentioned Jerry Pournelle yet.

    Somehow he finds time to write novels while running a very insightful blog, writing a column for Byte, keeping active in the amatuer aerospace community, and generally having a life. I don't know how he does it, epecially at his age.

    He proves that blogs and more, the internet, can coexist with real life(tm)
    (for authors at least).

    Personally I'm to the point now where I'm so sick of Microsoft hegemony that I don't care if RedHat engages in similar predatory practices as long as MS goes down. I'll support RedHat even if they were a monopoly, because at least the technology inside is good and it's not MS snake oil.

    Actually, in this case it's a great idea. The game world is bounded by walls, so you can put the walls in the 0 index (and the width+1 index) of your array and not have to explicitly test for the array bounds. Treat them like any other wall. Ahh, that makes sense.

    We have around sixty ~400MHz desktops which are increasingly showing their age.What apps are you running that is causing them to show their age? With sufficient memory, P2-400's are still plenty fast for office apps and email.

    Personally, I'd spend my money on a 256MB stick of SDRAM and some time to reinstall the OS.

    I thought it was interesting that the author said that more people where adding DVD players and surround sound speakers to their home computer in hopes of makeing it their new home theater. I think a lot of people are bringing their computer to the home theater in the family or media room and converging it that way.

    One of the best sources for info on how to build and tune a Home Theater PC (HTPC) is the AVSForum

    They have an excellent FAQ, a dedicated HTPC forum, and lots of pros.

    Ars has a good editorial in response to the CNET article.

    At the end of my Crusoe article, I predicted that TM would eventually announce a workstation-class chip. It's been a little over a year and this still hasn't happened, but I remain convinced that they're working on just such a project.

    Firingsquad has an excellent review comparing dual Durons to dual Thunderbirds using both Palamino and non- versions of both chips. They conclude that the Palamino Duron is the best bang for the buck.

    From their site:
    The Rocket Drive stores data in memory modules (standard dynamic random access memory, or DRAM) rather than on magnetic media.

    From reading the various reviews, the Athlon XP doesn't seem to have SMP capability.

    Are the Athlon XP and Athlon MP essentially two lines now? It sucks to see AMD succumb to marketing in order to combat Intel.

    The biggest one in NorCal is Lantrocity, in Sacramento. They put on a good party (I've been to a few).

    I also help run a midsize (50-80) bimonthly lanparty in Modesto, about 90 minutes from downtown SF.

    I went to the last three BANGG events, and they were good, but very irregular.
