My business are long term and so is my relations with third-party products. If it's GPL they really don't have a chance of long-term survival, I don't want to switch supplier in a year or two.
I prefer doing business with people who knows what they are doing.
I just tested blender for a very short while so it might just be me not knowing but: How do you undo-redo? I couldn't find it! Such a basic function should be easy to find.
"Switzerland is a major player (with respect to it's size, of course) in pharmaceuticals, banking, and engineering."
Not really, they are living well on money people are not willing to pay in tax and crime related money due to their bank secrecy. This is what makes the swiss rich.
Hehe, where do you think these money comes from? It's people running away from paying tax or crime related money, this country lives on it's strict bank secrecy (not telling police or IRS about your drugmoney you have there).
"and a huge science/tech industry (ever heard of the Nobel Prize?)."
"Net revenues for the three months ended January 26, 2002 decreased by approximately $37.4 million or 88.1% to $5.1 million, compared to net revenues of $42.5 million for the three months ended January 27, 2001."
Net revenues decreased 88.1%!!!
I hope for their sake that they have some sort of plan to get out of this mess.
So if I spend five years of research to develop a truly unique type of software that does something big-corp should be able to high-jack it however they like to?
Lets say I develop a revolutionary picture format way better than jpeg. Say you can't implement it by accident (suggesting the patent isn't to broad) but it's a pricice patent for this specific thing. Microsoft (for example) should be allowed to just copy it and through it into windows without paying the author?
This makes the small man totally powerless against the big companies out there. Not that I'm saying the current abuses in software patents in the US is a good thing but abandonment sounds very bad to me!
Since when are PCs getting cheaper? A new medium performance computer has costed basically the same for the last ten years.
Also from the article: "pay the Microsoft tax" What tax is that? Microsofts develop something, if you want it you pay for it like everything else. How is this a tax?
Now wonder the open source community has no credability.
Whats most interresting is how/. is pushing itself for a defender of free speech. I guess thats only apply if you agree with the people running slashdot.
Why is slashdot censuring the content posted? This is no flamebait, I just wanna know!
I was posting a couple of posts the other day saying (contradicting whats political correct on this site) the record-labels was not going that well. Just trying to enlighen people that they are just doing good on a couple of bands and the rest just costs lots of money. The bigger companies all have negative cashflows in their music divisions.
I was not talking bullshit, trolling or beeing rude or anything. Suddenly I couldn't post anymore, it said bad posting was comming from my ip and I was banned from posting.
What kind of sovjet union style censorship is that???
Should be "At the same time big-corps have the same protection ofcause". But as a whole patents are very good for the individual, otherwise money talks and nothing else matters.
Ehhh, greedy? Are you aware that record-labels are NOT doing so great right now? Actually, most record-labels have negative cashflow.
But that certainly don't mean I think it's ok for them to rip artists off like this. It's outragious! I just wanted to point out that the record-labels are not that rich as most people seems to think.
The whole idea that the open source community would be able to be financed with service and support is ridicolous.
Service and support is low-end, low-margin business.
Are you sure you really want to use code from those hippies in critical military systems? For god sake, they can't even implement memset correct.
Microsoft has had their share of serious bugs but there are many professional software companies with very good trackrecords.
Thats because your probably is a socialist, for a non-socialist it was quite funny :)

Why not just buy maya or softimage, very powerful software for the money.
I just tested blender for a very short while so it might just be me not knowing but: How do you undo-redo? I couldn't find it! Such a basic function should be easy to find.
No, but they gave it away anyway.
Thats why I said:
"Not that I'm saying the current abuses in software patents in the US is a good thing but abandonment sounds very bad to me!"
The whole patent system IS abused at this point with examples nearly as redicilous as the ones you are mentioning.
Thats what Lenin, Stalin and Mao said. It's amazing how fast people forget history.

Ever heard of Sweden, different country.
The swiss are parasites.
Well said, all they really do is to let their own companies steal research made somewhere else.

Ooops might be a good word to descibe that!

RMS for one is payed for by the tax-payers. Think most of them are.

Would you hire someone whos goal is to destroy commercial software companies?
"With the computer industry in a slump"
:)
Hurds of people giving everything away for free sure will make that better, thats really going to raise the value of software
"Ogg Vorbis for Free (as in speech)? "
Because they don't have income (as in revenue). They develop commercial software because most want commercially suppored software.
What don't they get? They have salaries to pay each and every month.
The people not getting it are the open source companies going bancrypsy this very moment.

Patents are in most cases good, it makes progress possible and protects the small investor from the money strong big-corps. At the same time big-corps
The problem with software patents are that they are often over-broad and often obvious. You shouldn't be able to violate a patent by mistake.
We all know the US situation, how will it be in Europe?
