Without income no company can survive. Many of the dot-coms really has to charge more for their service, they can't live on thin air, it just can't happen.
I think that the fact that the public has gotten used to the idea of not paying anything for anything will be one of the most difficult issues for these kind of companies.
When it comes to software development we will have basically the same problem. Tons of people who lives on their parents, venture capital or the goverment (studying for example) are flooding the market with free stuff. This is not a very big problem today but I suspect it will get worse in the comming years.
This is a company that mainly lives on others work. If it isn't going that great for them, how are things going for those companies who actually has to make products themselfs and live on them?
It may be the case that is if encryption software must have a backdoor (witch I guess is a special "police" key that the data also is encrypted to and not some general backdoor) the people not using encryption software with a backdoor has something to hide? Should be easier to spot WHO to go after.
Doesn't that RMS fanatic have anything better to do?

Most value is in different kind if intellectual property these days. And thats not a bad thing, that makes YOU as a human valuable. Go ask your grandfather what it was like when the value was in lumber (or whatever) instead of the humans working.

Well, I really think the situation now is quite self-inflicted.
The companies that now sees their stocks go through the floor just DOESN'T MAKE MONEY. And if you don't make money you can't justify that others should by your stocks for lots of $$$. And in the long run you can't pay your salaries and bills.
Companies needs to make money, it's as simple as that.

I have personal experience with share-economies, I suggest you gain that experience yourself and come back and tell us what you think of the peoples situations in such places.
"Using your own reasoning, making every street a toll road and charging people to breathe must be good for business and therefore for the world. "
Why would it? We pay for roads just as much as we would with tolls but it's much more practical to finance this with taxes instead, witch is what we are doing.
What software creates a need instead of filling it?

It's trading that has made the US and European economies so strong. Compare that to contries that implemented share-economies like Cuba, Russia and nothern korea. I don't associate thoose countries with wealth, do you?
Haven't you noticed that all businessess around IT are having financial troubles? Giving things away surely is going to make it all ALOT better. (spare me bullshit replies about service&support thank you)
No need to go to Afganistan for fanatism, there is quite alot of it right here on slashdot.
Yes, but if there are tons of free alternatives how are the ones who payed for it going to be able to make it back?

Na, what good do facts do. Just keep on bashing!
Yeah, thats the spirit! Bash!
The article shows why you don't need to go to Afganistan to find fanatism.
I like the Linux os (but certainly not the FSF) but come on, why not stay with the truth?
The war between windows and linux on the desktop is over, windows won.
Yeah! Give me more dollarsighns in Micro$oft, more more more!
Just bring it on, ignore all facts, just bash, bash, bash!
1: Socialist fanatics rules the Linux-scene.
Enough reason for me not to use it.
Technically I like the OS but I just can't stand the socialist politics directing it.

No, I just think that is could be a bit easier to spot potential terrorist.

Why is everyone looking for fanatism in Afganistan when there are plenty of it right over at the free software foundation.
Just check out www.gnu.org, there you have a bunch of fanatics also.
Couldn't agree more. Socialists running around and dictating how software shall be used and produced.

They simple discovered the fact that now they can't just get loads of VC cash but must actually pay for themselfs and must have a income.
