The book is a great read, but whats more fun is looking back in a year at the little pile of junk in the corner, with its 240 game titles, and realizing 'holy shit, i wrote all those'.
This is exotic hardware, and while it isn't necessarily 'powerful' in the same sense as some PC archictures (you know, where there are millions of programmers to compete with), the fact remains that the neverending attempt at defeating Moores Law resonating through PC-land is a sure-fire way of losing all the fun in life.
This little box, with its tight fittings, is something fun to do something fun with. To be continued...
So what do you tell your customers when they ask how long it will take to backup or replace a patch on your synths?
Umm.. our customers just do it. They don't have problems backing up patches.. or restoring them for that matter.
Your other points are rubbish. MIDI is still here because it works, its implemented, and thousands and thousands of people are using it, still to this day, to make good tunes.
Also, OSC == THE FUTURE, so meh re: lack of MIDI.:)
Horse shit. MIDI is one of those protocols which just works, and works well, and does not need to go away.
OSC may be nice, but then so is XML. Should we replace MIDI with XML? No. Why?
Because there are thousands upon thousands of MIDI devices out there. They're all still good. They all still work.
The lack of MIDI on this thing is ridiculous, and demonstrates ingenuity on the part of a 'controller designer'. If it ain't got MIDI, it ain't a controller! Its a fancy peripheral for your computer, and thats about it!
(Disclaimer: I work for a synth manufacturer, we like MIDI.)
heh heh.. it was more like a 'glowing black bar of soap', which seems kinda useful to me in many ways, but.. it really did work pretty well. the O-LED screen was touch-sensitive too, so you could still dial buttons and such..
The one I saw at CeBIT had -nothing- on the front of it - the screen covered the whole front side of the rectangle, and it had a scroll-wheel and thumb flipper buttons on the sides. It was completely black; when the rep pulled it out of his pocket, it just looked like a flat black plastic lozenge, and then he turned the OLED on and one face of it came alive.. really impressive.
Though, the interface in that picture looks like the one used on this proto I'm describing, so its close.. maybe they updated the design since then.
All I know is that I was really impressed with it, and wanted to buy it right away, but the rep wasn't having any of that! Back it went, into his pocket!:*(
Well, that is 'bar of soap' (its a design philosophy) but the one I saw had no buttons on its face - the front of the OLED display covered the entire face of one side of the rectangle, and it had 'flipper buttons' and a scroll wheel on the sides, so you'd hold it between your two hands to watch a movie or read e-mail.
Maybe it was just a prototype.. but it was really impressive. If I ever see it, I'll consider upgrading from my aging Siemens..
.. I saw a Motorola Linux phone that really had me drooling - it was just a simple "bar of soap" form-factor, no keys, one big O-LED display on one side of the rectangular black plastic form, and when you hit the On button, the whole thing lit up.
It was running Linux, only the guy demo'ing it wouldn't really let me play with it too much.. he did show me some videos on it, and demo'ed the voice-recognition features, which seemed pretty workable. But, alas, it doesn't look like Motorola are releasing this one too soon.. anyone know of the "bar of soap" Linux phone from Mot?
Yeah, I don't really watch much television either, really. Well, occasionally I get the Simpsons.. but would you believe that I didn't have a television for 2 years, until a neighbor insisted that I take his spare (he found it anti-social that I wasn't keeping up on the news!!!) and then my boss gave me his hand-me-down, because he also felt that it was incorrect of me not to at least have a television!
Talk about Mob Rule. Television is the Enemy!!!!
The thing about Totalitarianism/Fascism ..
on
Good Bad Attitude

· Score: 1
.. is that it is, quite literally, to be found everywere. In all walks of life.
When the philosophers/radicals of the previous century predicted that Mankind was to evolve into a totalitarian regime, they were right. It wasn't that hard to predict.
You really don't have to go far to find a fascist point of view.
Totalitarianism is a radically contagious personality trait. Just turn on the TV. News presenters are totalitarian; this personality is contagious, just like other social diseases. People love to have an authoritative perspective on things - even me, right now, I'm doing it!!! - but the thing about it is that it is a transmitted personality. We learn Fascism, as a meme, all through life.
The "Ever Right" person, who has an opinion about everything and is "always close to righteousness".. Fascist. Micro-Fascism, here even on/., is something we all contend with.
Am I the only person who finds those to be irritating and degrading?
Nope. I think "The Laugh Track" is an amazing bit of brainwashing material, personally. Most people are only laughing at the degradation on TV because of the 'mob factor' that gets triggered by a laugh track. I think the Laugh Track is one of the most significant pieces of propaganda machinery around.
The only reason its there is to make you join in.
Laugh Track == Mob Rule.
Also, I don't think that the grandparent meant that personally, and I too am curious as to what you find funny.
Well, I can't honestly say that I'm not susceptible to a fair bit of schadenfreude, just that I'm really tired of it. I've seen this 'television personality' of derision and degradation evolve over the years, incurred by anyone who devotes a significant amount of time to watching television for entertainment, and I myself am prone to it, too.
But if you want to know what I personally find funny, it'll be the old standards: Simpsons, Futurama. Maybe its because they're cartoons that I'm willing to be more 'forgiving', or maybe its the absence of a Laugh Track... but I think you get my point. I'm not saying I'm above it; just that I'm sick of it, and wish everyone else was above it, too..
I instantly judged you to be one of those people that always hate everything so they can seem above it all and look cool doing it, but inside you're just as insecure as everyone else and only looking for acceptance.
Yeah, coz 'following the pack' is all, oh so better..
I'm just sick of degradation. Its like, is this the only way to be funny? Constantly degrading things? Putting things down?
Making out like the only game in life is to pursue the Alpha Dog?
Try this one day: Watch Seinfeld (or any other agit-sit-com for that matter) without the laugh track.
Its Just Not Funny. Its actually sad that a whole nation of people find it 'entertaining' to watch the spoils of human entropy..
"serotonin reuptake inhibitors", blah blah blah.. this is all wonderful science, designed to make you think the experts know what they're doing, when in fact.. all they're doing is giving you reasons to buy their drugs.
"Antidepression Medication" is little more than legalized barbituates, dude. All your countrymen getting their 'fixes' for their 'mental health problems' are little more than huge junkies, backed up by their 'Professional Peers', the mental health 'industry'.
Sure, you've got a 'mental health industry' to help you justify your nations monthly fix, but all I'm saying is.. roll the so-called 'street drug industry' under that same big banner, and the problem is solved.
Prozac ain't much different than Smack. Both are gonna change your mental state. Why should one be legal and the other not?
(Hint: Big Corporations can't deal with Drug Mafia.. unless they become one - and boy, how they have, how they have...)
Good, reasoned, clear, calm American level-headed thinking. What else should I expect but extreme bigotry from an American who doesn't like to be told that he might.. just might.. need to take his head out of his ass before he pushes that Big Fat Red button?
War is not the solution. Police tactics are not the solution. You clearly are a terrible student of history; NO POLICE STATE, AND NO POLICE STATE TACTICS, HAVE --EVER-- RESULTED IN MORE PEACE!
Your country wants War. It Needs War. Your economy is founded on the principles of War.
By saying 'Nuke Korea', you are not offering War as a solution to anything... you are, in fact, only offering the problem.
Irony? Like Goldy, only not as Yellow?
uh huh. situational ethics. wunderbar, mate!!
heh heh .. to make damned sure its gone. for good.

Music gets boring fast. People aren't hoarding it any more.
Its not something you put on the shelf.
Some say, its something you 'make for yourself', and thats the true spirit of music.. not the mighty buck...
Sure, there are always classics, but generally, stuff gets old fast. Who cares about keeping it around any more?
There's tons of it, old and new, to be had.
So what do you tell your customers when they ask how long it will take to backup or replace a patch on your synths?
Umm.. our customers just do it. They don't have problems backing up patches.. or restoring them for that matter.
Your other points are rubbish. MIDI is still here because it works, its implemented, and thousands and thousands of people are using it, still to this day, to make good tunes.
bah! I *am* describing MIDI in realtime, using XML.

Just because Tracktion got it wrong, doesn't mean you should be jumping to any conclusions
Also, OSC == THE FUTURE, so meh re: lack of MIDI. :)

(Hate Seinfeld. Worst excuse for 'entertainment' ever.)

Shark. Jump.
Not THAT amazing.
.. what if this system were a -public- resource rather than a secret one? Imagine the possibilities for rock and roll!
I don't give a fratz about fanboix 'trainspotting' about this computing system. It means nothing that its 'not cool'.
Just the fact that it 'only takes' a computer in the 200's region of the top500 to spy on a massive human population is impressive.
Not fanboix whiney trainspotting. Think 'culture, eating itself'.
Moving on
