  1. Same story on Rent A Downloadable Movie · · Score: 1

People are ripping movies more and more these days, just like CDs, and sharing them on P2P programs like Direct Connect, etc. Same story, different industry. Hollywood is going under...!

  2. M$ Marketing, hmmm? on $1200 Cheap! · · Score: 0, Troll

Everyone knows M$ marketing is a joke. I'd never believe that sheit. What a waste of money. Good old monkey boy hard at work. I'm gonna wait 'till the radio shack down the street gets it and play it myself to see if it's any better than my 1.4ghz gForce 3.

    Heh. Another good laugh.

  3. Re:Educational games always need a boost on 3D First-Person Games, So Far · · Score: 1

I've always thought it would be a cool job to build maps of historical places in 3d max. One thinks one could easily sell them to game companies. Companies could reuse the maps as death match, scavenger hunt, scary history lesson, etc base lines.

Ideas: Alcatraz, Tower of London, NYC subway system, Winchester mystery house, Missions of California, Cathederals of England, France catacombs, etc.

True that education gaming lacks. IMHO the quickest way to learn is through a game. The more 3d the game the easier it is to become involved.

I've started playing OF and like it. There's a learning curve - i find myself frustrated and back playing Unreal Tournament after a few short missions. Would be nice to have a way to save the game multiple times like in Half-life. OF is slow if you like blowing things to peices like in UT and Quake.

What's the online version like? Haven't played multiplayer yet 'cuz I need a clan(?) URL. Any good URLs to test on?

BTW - Operation Flashpoint hasn't been released in the US yet. Had to buy mine from a UK ripper on ebay. The promo film is what sold me. Fscking rocks!

  7. Re:How the story is told... on Fleeing Jurassic Park III · · Score: 1

You sit in the theater and think of how you could re-write the script as you are watching the movie.

What also sucks is when you can predict the dialogue. You know it's a bad movie when the characters use cliché instead of original speach. I call it "Soap Opera" syndrome.

  8. IFC on Fleeing Jurassic Park III · · Score: 1

Ever since I subscribed to digital cable, I've been hooked on the Independent Film Channel. These guys know how to pick *intellegent* films.

I haven't been to the theaters in months (to see Memento - awesome film by the way). And when I do go I feel spammed. All those damn commercials before the film and that sick feeling of being used. Wish there was an organic delete button for bad commercial memories.

Some rightous films that have been on IFC lately:
    Little Box of Moonlight
    What's the Story, Tigerlily?
    Nosferatu, The Vampyre
    Pi
    Man Bites Dog

There are a sheit load of other good ones - these just come to mind right now.

I've said it before - they should combine the two shows. Give the contestants nessesary peices - like servos and rc units, but have them build machines that will destroy each other at the end of the day.

Except for the episode last night. The bridging machine the brothers-in-arms built was pretty complicated. Maybe if that 70 year old mother weren't just sitting on the bycicle while everyone else on the team heaved and hoed the Mothers-of-Invention would have won.

  14. Working for an online education company... on How Much Do Employers Budget for Education? · · Score: 1

I just take my admin password and log into one of the many universities we host and silently observe/interact in an online course. Calculus one week, C# the other, Germanic History the next. So far I've increased my IQ by 30 points!!

But seriously, I lead the internal training department here at eCollege. We have an education budget - about $5000 per developer. We go to classes every 6 months or so on whatever technology fits our fancy - as long as it applies to our current system. But the best solution we've come up with is a two hour lecture every Friday lunch. We all meet to discuss and train on new technologies. Lunch is paid for by eCollege. Group interaction goes a long way. And we get to hear and become familiar with the many projects that are going on.

We also have agreements with some of the universities we host. If an employee sees an online course they would like to take, we normally get a huge discount from that university. Education is cheap if you're hosting the education - it's a pretty sweet deal.

  15. I Dissagree on Bob Young On Intellectual Property · · Score: 1

Real artists get their money from concerts. Look at the Grateful Dead, Phish, etc. Their bootlegs caused a huge following. They made much more on concerts and peripherals (shirts, posters) than with CD sales. The RIAA is the middle man. They are the greasy sales people that tell you what you like because they are pushing the latest image.

I see music as tokens of nostalgia. You listen to music to create a mood. That mood is enhanced if you have a concert memory to go with it.

In reality, it doesn't take a genius to create good music. A simple mathematical formula - the beat, structure - with a bit of practice and creativity. Nothing a comp sci major can't handle. It's the image that record companies push. If we weren't so concerned with image, it would be easy to be in a successful band.

So, then, image is everything? I think not. Creativity and practice makes music. But in our world of beautiful people and , image wins.

In the big picture, what are bands doing to enhance our society? No much compared to scientists, doctors and teachers. They are only giving us a momentary nostalgia\mood fix. They should be paid accordingly. Eliminate the profit hording middleman and you have a properly priced industry. Look in the near past. Only big names like Duke Ellington and Count Basie made $$$ to name a few- and the cash was made touring at that. The music industry is over saturated with retarded competition all in the race to be popular for your fifteen minutes of fame.

This site is for "For Sale By Owners" only, and it's written in Python!!

FSBO is probably the best way to go for selling and buying a house. Realitors take about 3% when buying and charge up to 8% for selling. This adds up!!! A realitor wanted $14K for my $200K house. Screw that. What do realitors do anyway? Show you the house, take you to a title company and give you a bottle of wine when the sale is final. They are totally middle. This time I'm selling by owner and saving $$$$.

  18. 3rd vs. 1st person viewing on Voice Over IP for Linux Games? · · Score: 1

I wrote this a while back - seems like some of this may be a reality...

Sometime in the near future first person and third person games will combine to form a more spectator like environment. The public spends how much $$$ on sports entertainment? Soon a game will come out with a much wider spectrum of roles. Imagine playing Unreal as a coach that has fly and invisible powers, but can't participate in the carnage. You could only instruct players on your team. Your view would be like Black & White - player names\statistics above characters, ability to see through walls, ability to talk (voice over IP) directly to players and advise their movements. Clans will turn into teams with one distinguished leader\coach. Possibly owners as well.

Spectators would come in different flavors. Karma points to those who notice/follow the best action. Spectators would work their way up to music coordinators, camera\view operators, announcers, and finally referees. Players and coaches have the option of listening to the announcers. I see this environment replacing sports as we have it today. Eventually, all those football, soccer, baseball, hockey players are just going to be too boring to watch. We'll want something quicker with more carnage. Imagine it: Unreal Tournament broadcasts on TV.

  19. Remind Me: How Will This Work? on Thomson's Vision: Smart Cards For Everything · · Score: 1

What's this technology going to be like? You buy a CD that has a special encryption. You enter the key into your playing device and listen to your hearts content.

But, oh shoot! I lost the key for that one album I liked so much. Darn. Better buy another one.

    Or...
Each CD comes with a code. You buy hardware that can decrypt that code. You listen to your heart's content.

But, gosh! I want to lend this CD to a friend 'cuz it's soooo cool, but he doesn't have a decrypting device. Fortunately he can download a decrypting algorithm on his computer and rip the files to MP3. Or he can use gnuTella. Mine as well download already ripped songs without having to bug me.

And we're back to square one...

The recording/media industry should just give up and realize that they are the middle man - between creative minds and the public. FACT: Technology eliminates the middle man. We are seeing retail stores offering different brands die because consumers can now go directly to the product manufacturers. We will see the same thing in the recording\media industry.

It's like Mobil's new Speed Pass (http://www.mobil.com). Seen that commercial with a guy running in a race and goes to buy water with his Speed Pass on a key chain? Super lame idea. So you have a Speed Pass key chain - will you need a separate key for Safeway, Walmart, Alphabeta - all with different names and colors? And what if you decide to use your credit card and bump your speed pass against the reader. Do you get charged twice?

I predict Speed Pass and this smart card wave will die. Current system works fine. Don't fix if it ain't broke.
