  1. Re:I'll let you into a secret about Britain on How Can We Convert the US to the Metric System? · · Score: 1

Anything that counts in the UK is metric. You purchase petrol in litres, when you put paper in you printer it is A4 (a metric size), threads on screws are metric (like GL14), when you go to Tesco's you will purchase in kilograms and liters. The metric system is complete where ever money changes hands. People still measure their weight in stones because at 14 pounds to a stone, it sounds like you weigh a lot less!

The reaction of this employee was so horrible towards me that I would have never dreamed my worst enemy could be so vile. The point being: Some people are mean, nasty and vengeful. Sometimes they are bosses and sometimes they are employees

and we use Linux servers for our databases (Postgresql), Linux for our industrial machine drivers, Linux for our web access (much safer than windows) but we still use Win2K as desktop clients. Our office suite is Star Office though and we are very stable and please with the combination. Problems, none! One day the Win2K may go away but not the Postgresql, it is the most stable piece of software in our businesses.

I find that the process of creation is only half of the beauty of Linux. The other half is the wide flexibility to use the elements of Linux to do new things. There is no preconcept to the use of the collection of components which give rise to solving an ever widening range of problems and interests

If Microsoft give a US$ 1.00 dividend to its stockholders that is just a 4% return on the per share price. If they do this 5 times then all of that money in the bank is gone. I have bad invenstments that return better than 4%. You can currently get a muni (at least in California) that returnes more than 4% per year for 25 years, tax free! Even with this dividend you would need to believe that the price per share is going to go up as if Microsoft were a growth company

I have a small company and was attacked in a similar way by a large German company (I'm in the USA). They simply attacked with a lawyer from a large office in New York and I am in a small town in California. My lawyer did some digging and found that there is a federal law that states you must give the person in violation a full description of the violation and allow a responce. If there is not a civilized responce then you can go to court. We never went to court and we got the problem sorted out. It sounds like SCO would be in violation of that federal law.

Congrats to this group in trying to come up with an alternative. I look forward to my first chance to fly an electric airplane

  8. Postgresql great substitute for Oracle Workgroup on MySQL A Threat To The Big Database Vendors? · · Score: 2, Interesting

In our corporation we used Oracle with good success for many years. We switched to Postgres for many reasons and have found great success with it. It is very stable, excellent documentation available and is much more straight forward to administer. No problem convincing the suits as the cost of the Oracle licenses went into orbit. I would recommend Postgresql for use in a production environment

  9. Excellent gameplan on Microsoft Sinks Teeth Into New Orleans · · Score: 1

It now looks quite clear how Microsoft plans of keeping control of the market. They make the desktop operating system, the server operating system, the database, the applications software. A nice neat package to do a specific job, complete! Just sign the contract and sit back. No need to call IBM, Sun or HP. They would still offer bits and pieces instead of a complete package. The ultimate weapon? Microsoft could withdraw its desktop operating system unless you buy a complete package. Very strong marketing plan.

We switched from Oracle to Postgresql and have been far more satisfied with Postgresql. We are a small shop (25 users) but give the database a fair workout.
