  1. Darwin.... on YAPSLP: Yet Another Private Space Launch Plan · · Score: 1

Which 7.1 has it? I just looked on Redhat's site and found this Comparison Chart , and none of the the versions (Std., Dlx., Pro.) show that they contain a DVD.

  3. Been waiting for Linux Dist to Do this... on FreeBSD on DVD · · Score: 3

Since Mandrake/RH have expanded to multiple CDs, I've been waiting for one of them to start making the distribution available on DVD.

This would actually provide some value over just downloading and burning the CDs, you wouldn't have to switch CDs in the middle, and could probably put a few more things on it since the current distributions almost completely fill the two CDs, and they are cutting things to avoid overflowing to a 3rd CD. I would consider purchasing a single DVD instead of downloading, if the price was right...

  4. Surprising... on VA Linux Systems Leaving The Hardware Business · · Score: 3

I had thought that the value-added hardware sales, which VA had focused on, would have the best chance at generating a positive cash flow.

I thought that selling a 'free' OS like Red Hat would be more difficult, but these announcements(this and RedHat's quarterly results) seem to show just the opposite..

Oh, well, What I'd really like to know is if there will be any really good sales on VA Equipment?

  5. Re:Difference between "adjusted" and "reported"? on Red Hat In The Black · · Score: 5

Purchases of companies have to be 'accounted for'. Since I don't know what RH paid for Cygnus, and I don't want to look it up, lets assume $30 Million. Also let's assume that the accounting 'books' for Cygnus says that their net worth is $2 Million.

So now they just paid $30 Million (could be in stock or cash), yet they can only add $2 in net worth to their books. In order to balance the books they must right off the $28 Million difference.

They can do it all at once, or spread it out over many quarters(i.e. get a tax benefit from it). They call this good will write-off. Even though RHat believes the company is worth $30 Million to buy, the difference between this purchase price and the accuired company's net worth have to be written off.

It doesn't impact the cash flow, which is critical. For cash flow they were generated postive $1.5 M, i.e. they now have $1.5 M more in the bank...

  7. Too bad VA didn't do a second offering Like RH on VA Layoff Rumors · · Score: 2

When Redhat was up for a while, they where able to do a 'second offering'. This allowed them to sell more shares at then current price (I think over $100/sh). Redhat was lucky enough to do this second offering before the bottom fell out of all the Internet/Linux stock and to pocket alot of cash.

Unfortunately for VA, their stock never stayed up long enough for VA to do this. This could have allowed them to have a large stash of cash for these hard-times.

Something like 1/2% would get them $2.5/box, not bad to have a nice steady income like that..

  9. When's It going to be Mandrake ;-) on GCC 3.0 Released · · Score: 1

It looks like for this issue with file formats, we should be supporting AOL, since the Real Player is available for Linux, unlike the Windows Media Player..

Is there any work on a player for Linux that would play the Media Player files, or is there a problem with Copyright/Trade secrets for any potential developers?

Reviewers see way to many movies, and expects way too much from every movie. Sometime people just want to escape for a few hours and just enjoy the action. All reviews/reviewers should be boycotted ;-)

Just because your HTTP download is faster, doesn't mean you have a faster dial-up. Your speed is still '56k'. So when you download a Gzip/ZIP file with IE/Netscape should it report the transfer speed using the uncompressed size or the compressed. Calculating the transfer rate using the larger original file would be wrong.

By the way, is GPRS deployed anywhere in the US?
