Anyone else think Slashdot is over covering the Raspberry Pi? It is getting to the point were I want it to fail just so I don't have to hear about it. Now I know how anti-Apple people feel.
We have better smartphones because of the iPhone (Visual Voicemail, a browser that displayed HTML just like our desktops, a trustworthy online store to buy apps for phones) We got a better iPhone because of Android (cloud syncing, usable notification system, multitasking.) Competition between Apple and Google drove better smartphones more than the open source community. The open source community helped raise the bar but it isn't the primary driver. Battery tech and chip manufacturing processes also drive smartphone quality more than the open source community.
Better hardware drove better routers; N standard, on-board USB ports for printing and NAS, better chips for improved power efficiency. I really haven't seen any new software features for non-geeks (90%+ of the population) on routers in several years.
It is also immoral to develop a cure for cancer. Think about the effects a cure for cancer would have on the food supply (more mouths to feed,) public and private retirement benefits, and social/political culture (do you think legal gay marriage would happen sooner or later if the "Greatest Generation" didn't die off.)
Extending human life without improving the quality of life is unethical.
Brings back memories of building the 2.2 Linux kernel on a 486 in 2000. I was a poor freshman CS major and this was my introduction to Unix. Took 8 hours to build it I remember right. After someone told me I'd have to repeat this process after each update, I quickly looked for another Unix based OS. I think OS X was released within a year. I'm very happy Linux and my hardware have made this process less painful.
If WSJ makes 1% profit on print ($3.56), it is making about 20% online ($16.80). If there customers are happy and their stockholders are happy, WSJ is doing alright.
More people on Slashdot need to take some basic business and economics classes.
My number may be off, but they are closer than the posters.
Apple should publish some white papers on this or create an installation program that does the same.
Why would Apple want to help fix windows machine?
The geekier in the family or circle of friends is always called to fix computers. Those people will see you repair their broken machine will an Apple product.
Thought bubble: "Hmmm, this is the third virus I've had this month and my nephew fixed it every time with that thing."
Uncle: "So that little little white box fixes computers?"
You: "No, its an Apple iPod"
Uncle: "Hmm, pretty good product?"
You: "Yeah, it doesn't play ogg, but Apple makes some pretty good products and they don't have viruses and spyware problems."
Uncle: "How much one of those Apples cost?"
You: "Under $600" You wouldn't recommend it without the 512MB Ram
Citizen Kane has a great documentary with it, Battle for Citizen Kane. From IMDB.com:
This documentary, produced for PBS' "The American Experience" series, chronicles the struggles between filmmaker Orson Welles and newspaper tycoon William Randolph Hearst over the making and release of Citizen Kane, whose protagonist (Charles Foster Kane) was allegedly a barely fictionalized Hearst. Interviews with contemporaries of Hearst and Welles reveal the intense campaign to suppress the film and ultimately ruin the career of its director.
As many other people have said, this looks like a top ten list from a high newspaper
Its not that they think we are stupid, its just we have better things to do with my time. Many geeks just do not realize people do not want to mess with technology; it just needs to work. This is why Apple enjoys its current market position. I all ways thought it funny people on this site criticized Apple for not putting enough features in the iPod, but rave about Unix and its many forms for doing the same thing: K.I.S.S.

Why should they share their IP? They bought it, they can do with it as they please.

Why is this a shady deal?

I'm sure someone else has/will say this.

Anyone want to take a guess why 802.11n takes 3 antenna and 802.11g has two or one?
