  1. Is IndiX being maintained at all? on India Cool to Microsoft Source Code Offer · · Score: 1

Regarding your comments claiming IndiX being recently released, I think it is not being maintained anymore. Recently I sent a query to the e-mail address provided on IndiX web page and it bounced back to me claiming that the user does not exist.

There has been no new version of IndiX for quite some time. They had not tried to merge it with latest X sources. It is more like a technology demonstrator than a finished product maintained by an active community.

I find pango to be more suitable for the needs of Indian languages as it is actively under development and all gtk2 based applications will support Indian languages by default.

    Comments welcome:-)

  3. Re:2 Questions... on Microsoft's Patent Problem · · Score: 1

The inventor is responsible for searching for pre-existing patents.

Looking into patent database is just a waste of time. And legally one shouldn't do that if he/she is a developer or inventor himself/herself. This position has been taken up by Linus and other kernel developers too. Unless you have not seen someone's idea, you can implement your own idea. You are not infringing on someone's idea if you do NOT know them at all. I am not a lawyer but I think no one can claim that I have stolen something which I have not even seen or known. Can someone knowledgeable in law can clarify on this?

This is not same as having a partnership with someone in developing something and then re-implement the whole thing yourself and then claim that the whole thing is yours. Perhaps MS lost on that ground.

  4. I have blocked most of them in my browser on Nationwide Class Action Filed Against DoubleClick · · Score: 1

In my browser(phoenix) ads.doubleclick.net and .doubleclick.net are on the top of the blocked list for cookies and java scripts execution. I didn't like them and hence they were not welcome. Anyway these ads were distinctly identifiable in my browser as the window proclaiming that my Internet connection was not optimized, did not look like a Windomaker window which I use on my desktop. Also since I use Linux, I know the operating system or the desktop software is not thinking that I am a stupid user and hence providing these extra optimization helps. I think majority of Linux or *BSD users might not have been tricked by these smart ass marketeers because of the shape of actual dialog boxes on their desktops. Ah but they were not the original targets either. sigh...

By the way, one of the major reason why I stopped using Netscape 4.7 (on linux) was its inability to block java script pop ups selectively. I can now surf better with my new mozilla firebird (phoenix) browser.

  5. Re:Great, another GTK appearance option (long). on Menu Shadows in GTK2 · · Score: 1
So... now we have GTK2 drop-shadows... Who the hell will ever figure out how to turn them on?

From the same URL posted in this article:

There are a couple of parameters that can be adjusted using the gtkrc file (either from a theme or from $HOME/.gtkrc-2.0)

gtk-menu-drop-shadow : When set to 0, menu shadow will be turned off. Any non-zero value enables menu shadow (default value: 1)

gtk-menu-shadow-delay : The delay before the shadow appears. The shadow is delayed to give some time to the underlying application to refresh its window. You can increase or decrease this value to adjust the shadow to your system (default: 100)

  6. For example squirrelmail plugins. on Aspect-Oriented Programming with AspectJ · · Score: 1

I find this is just a programming paradigm not dependent on any programming language. As you can do object oriented programming in C, you can do aspect oriented one in languages other than Java or C++. An excellent example of this implemented in PHP is Squirrelmail plugin architecture. It provides so many hooks for plugin developers that you can do amazing things with mail headers, body, addressbooks etc.

The unclarity of code will always remain a problem for maintainers, as suggested by Minna Kirai.
