you just don't get it. They didn't write quicktime, shockwave or the.doc viewer. They shouldn't be making any money off of those.
If they want to make something original like writing quicktime for linux, then fine, charge for it. This is just an emulator. They are emulating others work.
Until everyone else decides the stuff they write is worth $20. Then you get ($0 distro +$20 +$20 +$20 +$20 +$20 +$20 and so on.)
It's really not paying for software that I have a problem with, god knows I have purchased plenty. The problem is they want me to pay for a plugin that is emulating some other software. The whole irony is the fact that this stuff is free for windows.
You are correct. They don't have to offer it for free but if I am gonna pay, why not just pay windows and then I don't need any kind of wine?
For things such as this, is why I still have a windows box sitting next to me. Let me ask you this. If this was sold by Microsoft would you purchase it?
I tried to post the real link as well but got so lame compression filter thing, so I figured screw it, if you wanna be that way let them send everyone to the wrong page.
Well it says that part of the problem now is that some are under patents.
Even if they allowed for more they would end up being patented as well. The difference is now they have to pay all of the money to get those patents instead of using some of ours.
What they are trying to say is this is like sueing gunshops that sold illegal guns that were later used in crimes. IANAL but that seems like that would hold up in court.
If you would donate some of your free time and were able to find a few others to as well, most likely you could talk the school district in your area to follow this lead. If you have a child in the school even better.
I gaurantee no matter what district you live in, they could find something to do with the money they would save. Thats why schools have board meetings, to get ideas from parents and community members.
If you don't care, thats cool. Personally I would prefer my tax money to go to something better then adding a couple dollars to Bill's wallet.
Can IBM make Linux better than AIX.

IBM Wants Linux

That is the real question.
I am sure IBM is not sitting there idling. I would hope they are not leaving it to us(the open source community) to build them the os they want. I assume they are hard at work on this project at hand.
That is nothing but good news. Not only could we benefit from the things they build but more importantly, maybe they could be the leaders of direction. "Where do you want to go today?"
Some people may worry about a big corporation being too heavily involved in their "free os". I personally look forward to the days to come if IBM get truly involved. I first tried linux a few years ago and loved it, and continue to use it today. However, I thought at this point it would be farther ahead in some areas. If it takes a company like IBM to come in and challenge, lead and contribute then fine by me.
Even if it doesn't work for IBM, the advances will benefit all of us who use it now and this is a Good Thing.
Since I do not program games but do play them I will throw in my 2 cents. Other people may not agree, good for them. This is only for FPS games. I don't play RPG or RTS so I can't say how it is in those genre's.
It's hard to explain these things without being vague so bear with me.
First, the mouse movement in every d3d game I have played has sucked, at least for me. The only way I can explain it is that it feels sloppy.
Second, d3d games always look glossy or shiny. This is another point that is hard to explain. I really with I could explain this in better detail as this is the problem I have always hated this. It looks like everything has a nice shiny clear coat finish, if thats any better explanation.
Maybe opengl is going away in games and that makes me sad. If my only choice is the sloppy mouse and shiny graphics in d3d then I would probably only play ones that are very heavy on storyline, which narrows it down to 1 or 2. I wouldn't play any mp deathmatch, ctf, etc.

I would think it might be ok if it was nestled into tuition. Yes, the raise in tuition would suck but, hey, you get a laptop.
If you would read it you would see that sales increased 31 million, not that they had 31 million in sales.
Just because of a sales increase does not mean they didn't lose money. Maybe they from everything they have seen they sould of increased 180 million. The problem is no one can really know if something like this caused the loss of money, it's all speculation.
I am all for backing up copies you have but that in no way involves filesharing. I do believe it cost sales with some, while probably increasing sales with others. We will never know.
errr that should read winter.
And while I am on the topic of inventions, I would just like to say that defensivedriving.com is kick ass. Stupid no u-turn sign, they could put it a little farther away from the turn lane.
Does NASA have to share anything with the general public? I realize that this is an extremely large plane, but the fact that it was flown so high and under solar power is pretty amazing.
This would lead me to assume that they have made some amazing leaps in terms of solar power. If this is the case, why is it the only solar powered item I own is a calculator? It would seem as though there should be many solar powered items that are common place. I am aware there are more than just calculators but I am talking common.
Just a side note, I had an idea many years ago of making sunroofs on cars of solar panels and having them run a secondary ac that kicks on when the inside temp of car reaches 85F in these hot summer texas days. It could also kick on a heater when it drops below a certain level in the summer. I wish NASA would build that.
It would be nice. 3d has come a long way. My q3 numbers are just slightly under the windows numbers. The problem is not that enough linux users are playing games, it's in the fact that most don't buy the linux version of the game. Stores don't like selling the linux version either. It takes up more space for the same game that can be bought as windows version and then just have the binaries downloaded.
I don't buy the linux version if I already have the windows.
I hope they finish deus ex. I have been waiting for that one.
Yes they got broken. They weren't just killed by the distro because they thought they were unstable. Sometimes things aren't backwards compatible. Who is microsoft to say what software I care to run is stable or not. If it runs buggy and I don't mind, then they can fuck off.
They are making the program not work, forcing them to make the upgrade. It's not a case of the program not working so they have to upgrade. Microsoft doesn't KNOW shit when it comes to these matters. They just want these companies to have the XP compliant logo.
Working for experian, formerly TRW, I have seen this firsthand. All we did was collect information. Companies pay us to store all this information. Consumers pay us to see the information we are holding on them. Other business buy this information from us. We could narrow it down so precisely it was really marvelous. If company x wanted the name, address and phone number of all people age 25-29 married with two vehicles, one child, and a house while having less than $5000 in credit card debt we could have it delivered to them in hours if needed.
What makes information so valuable is you can use/sell it multiple times at no additional cost. That is why I try not to let anyone get any information from me anymore. If they want to make money off me they are gonna have to work hard at it.

No religion is complete without a number of holidays that you only get off why every other religion works.
If they were to ammend some holidays into their mix, I would definitely convert.

I couldn't make it past the first sentence.
I always thought you were supposed to use big font so the teacher thought you wrote more.
The article state "HAL" understands 200 words and has a 50 word vocabulary.
That does not seem impressive to me. I have never fooled with AI, so maybe my expectations are too high?
I could swear some irc bots are better, maybe I am just not as smart as I thought I was!
The best way for this to happen is to volunteer.
