As I have noted down several times, I think the way to go is for Dell to supply particular models with a live CD which 'just works'.
This would even help Dell in support of thier Windows paying customers to as in would ease support in terms of determining if a particular problem a customer was experiencing was hardware or software in nature.
This option would be good for long term gnu/linux users too as they can buy in confidence that the hardware is supported with the kernel on the live cd, but also leaves them free to choose their distro of choice to install.
Personally Id be happy for them to just ship with a live CD that just works.
It would be enough to show that the kernel has support of the hardware, it would actually be a benefit for it Windows customers in terms of support i.e avoiding resetting the computer to factory defaults to check if a problem was software or hardware, it would give customers gentle exposure to gnu/Linux without risking their existing setup.
Well... just what I reckon as someone who has spent too long supporting Windows on a help desk...
Personally I would like to see the big vendors, like Dell, certify that certain models have hardware support in the Linux kernel.
I think the best way for them to achieve this would be to ship with a live gnu/Linux CD.
Such a move could be positive in supporting Windows systems as well, easy to identify the computer hardware failure, or if it a foobarred Windows install. This would potentially save a lot of customer data:-) I speak of this as someone who has done their share of helpdesk support.
I am curious as to what there will be that wasn't in 'Unfinished Tales', 'Lost Tales 2' and 'Silmarillion'. I have previously hugely enjoyed 'Narn i Chîn Húrin' and so it would be good to see more of it but I do have more than a passing dout.
Open up a Command prompt and navigate to the directory that you want the file downloaded, Desktop might be good Type in the following
ftp ftp.mozilla.org
log in as anonymous and type password of email address. Note the password will not appear on screen. Type the following command
cd pub/mozilla.org/firefox/releases
Type in dir because the release may have changed by the time you try this. I would recommend going for the most recent stable release. Use the cd command to go to the release directory, choose it to be win32 and the English Great Britain release. At the moment that was the following command
cd 1.5.0.1/win32/en-GB
You then need to download the file. Note you need quotation marks around any file names with spaces. A dir command will let you know the file name, may well be easier to do the following
dir
This will produce a list of files, you just need to use the get command. In my example I typed in the following
get "Firefox Setup 1.5.0.1.exe"
After a few moments, on broadband, the file will have downloaded and be ready to install.
Notes The command dir will list the files on the current directory The command cd will change directory Firefox isn't the only program you can download which would be useful if IE isn't working. The site ftp.planetmirror.com has a huge array of programs available for download. Two particularly useful downloads would be avgfree and spybot. At present they are found at these particular addresses:- ftp.planetmirror.com/pub/avgfree ftp.planetmirror.com/pub/spybot
On some servers you need to specify how you are downloading files, whether as ascii or binary. When downloading exe files, it's going to be binary. Simply type in 'binary' to change mode. Among the commands available is help.
I just had to check where that quote comes from and the quote "It's turtles all the way down" comes from an amusing physics lecture by the late great Richard Feynman.
What I would same in responce is that if you have an experinced vba programmer then surely they normally write their spreadsheets as vba code and generate the spreadsheet it self on the fly. Much as my inherit distrust of excel spreasheets go, surely most of the points made are already potentially addressed? It would take it a step (much) futher to generate good vba code from a visually designed spreadsheet into vba code.
As far as debugging existing styles of spreadsheets go, see my previous post for a simple example (my appologies if curly brackets are used in other ways in excel)
Ok, I agree to some extent that the problem in quesiton is not relevant to the Open Document Format but that is not the whole point. Looking around at other widely used formats I cann't help but look at HTML. Checking the standards for it that there is an entire section on accessibility http://www.w3.org/WAI/
So as a non programmer, would it be fair to say that there should be space in the specification to addess accessibility issues?
Certainly an interesting system, but reading though it since the Gaming Nationals in Sheffield. If you like Burning Wheel, you may well like 'My Life with Master# http://www.halfmeme.com/
Perhaps 3.5 Ed does dumb down and play towards a munchkin style of play, but there are other games out there. Please look at the many independent systems out there. Let people enjoy their 3.5ed rules, it doesn't stop other forms of role playing!
Thanks for the replies folks. I do think people have missed the point that this is for a reletively inexpensive home setup.
I'm replacing my old 486 which does as a router and webserver with something more modern but fanless, say a miniATX board to do the routing, firewall, be an ftp server for when I use G4L, an imap server and somewhere to store large amounts of mp3s so they can be centrally accessed.
I get the impression from most the replies to look at rack mounting, I may well so so just to have an idea of the price otherwise I think I may have to live with having to turn the computer off if a hard drive dies. Not the RAIDed drives are not the backup just something to help avoid inconvience.
Without trying to be a complete troll, is USB 2 not useful for being able to hot swap hard drives?
Seriously, admitely on my home setup, I'm considering going for a large amount of the mostly static information being held on external USB hard drives RAIDed so that if one of them fails I don't need to turn off the computer to replace the hard drive.
If I'm wrong, please explain how or at least point me in the correct direction. Thanks
Any idea what those tools are?
I was wondering if they could be made to work using Dosbox or dosemu on a live gnu/linux CD?
Sounds like the kind of thing I had in mind.
Linux users get to know that a particular kernel works for the hardware and Windows users get an extra tool available.
Who could argue against that?

As a clarification the above example would be for a relative call and comething of the nature of ={a!1!} would be used for absolute resolution.
Just for 1c woth
An interesting observation. Would it then be a better idea to 'drag down' a 'is calcualated in the same manner as'?
for example could Exclel or Calc drag down ={a1} ?
Just an idea
Wouldn't virtualisation alow for this, for instance moving a working system with zen, alow for this to happen?
...
Genuinely curious

Why knock RoleMaster? I happen to love it, but still manage to also love games like 'My Life with Master' http://www.halfmeme.com/
:-)
Give 'My Life with Master' a look, I think you'll like

Then you'll be glad to see that theme support has just been added.
Just to add to the url links, here's an interesting looking project:-

I think you'll find it's documented here ;-)

I take it you didn't read Strange recently, very nice on how Dr Stephen Strange became Dr Strange:-
4 &format=comic for details
See http://www.marvel.com/catalog/showcomic.htm?id=83
So that would be the gnu/HURD ... I joke because I love :-)
Ok, a quick google and I even came across a discussion on the possibility of it.
