First, I'm one of the early adopters, I bought a Pioneer Elite HD set about 2 years ago, mainly for watching DVDs at first (which is OUTSTANDING, btw). The TV cost approx $7000. (In retrospect, I think I should have waited a year.. Heh)
I'm lucky enough to be in a market where the local cable system is transmitting a few channels in HD. I had to go online and grab a decoder (~ $300), and I was all set.
WOW. Amazing. I pick up CBS HD, and their Saturday afternoon College Football games made it ALL worth the while. You could read the frickin warning label text on the backs of the helmets! I now find myself to be a regular fan of the CBS primetime lineup, previously would have never watched a single show on there. (Hear this, advertisers? Networks?)
I live in Omaha. People probably don't think Omaha is a big tech area. (I don't!). But I've written our major networks in town, one is already transmitting OTA digital, another comes online in 2 weeks, and the other two will be done by Summer. Why justify HDTV?.. It's here folks. The programming is here.
I've since bought a direct-view toshiba widescreen hdtv for upstairs. I haven't gotten it to start picking up OTA transmissions yet (waiting till it gets a bit warmer to start figuring out antenna placements), but DVD content is amazing - and, guess what? The XBOX has a few widescreen 480p games, with 1080i games to follow shortly! Have you seen DOA3 on an HDTV? It would blow your mind away.
Things are going okay.. The prices ARE plummeting (my widescreen tube hdtv was only $1850! - and it's a flat screen as well). The content is growing. All the people that are sitting on the sidelines will start seeing more and more letterboxed NTSC television feeds (did anyone notice the black bars in the NCAA game CBS had a few weekends ago???).. While you had that, I had a PERFECT 16:9 game to watch.. Ahh..
I tried to do the something similiar last year. I set up a subdomain redirection site so you could assign microsoft.usuck.com to wherever you wanted, etc. (Actually, that site pointed HERE - and I didn't do it). I had over 70,000 domains being redirected.
After the spam community started using my domain service for their own good, Verio threatened to pull the plug, so I stopped that service. What a pity.
It was so fun, though. Getting emails from parents saying their kids were going to drop out of school because people had set up redirections from (example) johnsmith.usuck.com that ended up redirecting to gay porn sites.
This is an excellent suggestion. What I always try to do is break the codebase up into loose-coupled modules, and then take the nastiest one of them (well, I guess you could pick which one you want to do first based on anything, really) - and convert that to your new technology.
Doing this will help big time when something goes wrong, which it will. The area that caused the problem will be much more focused.
This also lets you start taking advantages of the benefits of your new technology much sooner. Roll the new in with the old - in production. Less scary as well. Small steps.
Is usenet that unusable that people rely on services like this? I'm just curious why there's a need for all these P2P applications to trade files, when the biggest file-trading network has been in existance for a very long time..
Oh crap! Maybe I shouldn't have posted this! I've let the secret out. (Locks doors, bars windows..)
Wouldn't a "routine" (cringe) plane crash be easy to determine by the conversations going back and forth with Air Traffic Control? I'd figure a simple radio call with "Oh crap - we've got an engine on fire - attempting emergency landing" would be very soothing (well, in light of recents events) to the nation at this point.
She also used it to rent movies from Kozmo, buy airline tickets and check movie show times. But when she left her job, she decided that she couldn't justify the $50 monthly DSL fee.
Well, of course you don't need broadband. Ugh. Maybe you check your stocks as well? Wow.
In my case, though, downloading 20G of p0rn of usenet each week - well, I need my broadband.
Anyone have a link to a movie of a meteor shower? I've been trying to find a good video to show my daughter - who's never seen a shooting star - and I can't find any.. She gets so depressed when me and the wife say "Look! There's another one!" and she misses it - again. Ugh.
Uh, you just described (minus the 802.11x support) the Audiotron. It will search across all Windows filesystem shares (samba, too), figure out what's there, index them many different ways, and when the request goes out for a song playback, it grabs it and starts playing in milliseconds. And, you can grab one at Best Buy on clearance for $149.
After reading the original story here about 3 weeks ago, I sent letters and emails to my representitives and congressmen. I even called an office. This is the first time I've ever done anything like this - I feel very strongy about this issue.
I received no auto-replies, no real replies, no acknowledgements, nothing.
Guess who's not getting my vote at the next election?
I swear, I'm gunna run for some public office and end this crap.
This device is outstanding. To counter the "Why not get an apex player for $99", well, that's nice that it holds a CD's worth of mp3s, but most people have much more than that.
Also, this looks just like a normal stereo component. It fits in quite well with my existing rack. It has optical audio out, which sounds amazing, mostly when piping these mp3s through Dolby Pro Logic II. Couldn't ask for more.
Being able to pick which songs you want without having to go sit in front of a computer is a nice thing as well. I've programmed in all the functions on the remote to my Pronto, so I can pick songs from the same device I switch television stations with, etc.
I'd definetly recommend grabbing the beta firmware, which gives you access to control your device via a web browser, access to shoutcast streams, and much more.
The developers listen as well. There is a very active mailing list and also a great forum to learn more about this stuff.
Best thing is - Best Buy had these devices on clearance for a few months, and may still be doing this - letting them go for $149. I'm guessing the complexity of a home network was a bit too much for the average Best Buy shopper, dunno.
I love my Audiotron. I'd love to see a portable jam-box-like device with 802.11b support.. (slobber)
Since when do roadies complain of back problems? Is this opening the doors up to elderly women who want to travel with bands and set up stages? A 4x12 cabinet is not that heavy at all, some even have wheels, and most of them have handles. They're not awkward. I used to lug mine around when I was a 120 pound stick in high school.. Ah well.
Also, if these things are so light, it would be funny to see the speakers push so much air that the air-cabinet starts floating away.. I wouldn't dare stack these things, a gust of wind could stop a concert..
This definitely didn't have to change.. I just hope it's a proof of concept, and they'll find something better to apply this technology to at a later time.. (Pool speakers???)
Ironically, you completely destroyed your own argument, by citing all of these false rumors, but citing a website as proof that they were false!
Not really. I'd argue that the story is ALWAYS on the net - anything you want to find will be on the net somewhere. I could prove anything based on material from a web site. Honestly, I think I could.
The thing is that on the net, the amount of static is MUCH higher than on respected television networks (CNN, for one).. When I hear something on CNN, I don't immediate have to question the story and head to 50 different websites to see if what I've heard is true or not.
When I hear something on the net, though, that definitely is not the case. It's just that this one web site (snopes2's inboxer rebellion) does a great service by spending time to debunk much information that spreads across the net.
I'm not saying I mistrust cnn.com, because I don't. But all they have is what they're reporting currently, so it isn't anything new.
On a side note, snopes2.com claims to have tracked down the original author of the arab girlfriend email, and she stands by her story...to be continued I guess.
From snopes2.com ---
Yet the author of the first e-mail (whom we contacted) believes the story her friend told her. She does not personally know the friend of her friend (the gal who supposedly received the letter), but does trust that her friend's account is accurate.
Once I could get my hands on CNN Television, I didn't even go near my computer the rest of the day.. Almost the whole week.:-) It was near impossible to get information from any of the major news sites during the crisis..
And, I wouldn't say the net is full of good information either. Things I've heard that are complete crap from the net in the past month:
Arab man tells girlfriend not to go to malls on Halloween. Nope.
Go outside and light a candle - we're gunna be photographed by satellites! Nope.
Nostradamous predicted all of this! The end is near! Morons.
Clear Channel Communications banned playing certain songs (LET THE BODIES HIT THE FLOOR, w00t!) on the radio.. Not quite.
Yea, if I want respectable news coverage, I'd sure as hell go to the net. FULL OF IT. When the neighbor lady down the street who starts rumors like these gets exposure to millions of readers, emm,.. I think I'll stick to television.
The lesson here is this: You get the smallest TiVo you can find (14 hour, 20 hour - Walmart supposedly had the 14 hours on sale for $109 or something), and then read this.
I had a 20 hour TiVo, and after a trip to pricewatch to grab a 5400rpm drive, and 9thtee.com to get the mounting bracket for the new drive, my cheapy TiVo unit now holds 130 hours.
Very good explanation at snopes.com

Cuz CNET just gave Trillian the "best of the IM" award, which I'm sure helped put a big target on Trillian.
That, and on download.com, Trillian is #2 behind ICQ..
Interesting how these attempts to block Trillian started within 48 hours of this publicity..

It's CLEP.
Bump this up. General misconception here. I'm in Omaha, and Cox Cable transmits a very good HD signal.. I love college football saturdays on CBS!

Don't be so upset. I'm sure your email was read (or at least scanned) by your friendly neighborhood FBI/CIA/NSA/whoever agent!
Hmm.. I was wondering what that blacked-out van that's been parked across the street from me for a few weeks was doing there.. Ugh.
