I'm in the same boat. That help.broadband.att.com site isn't responding to my web queries. So I snooped around Excite's site and found this this information from Excite

Not much, but more than AT&T has at this page

I sure wish they'd be a little more forthcoming with info...I'd like to know when/if we're going to go down, so I can plan my net needs around it.

    Oh well...we're just paying customers,

  6. larger project might require more than 1 language on The Power of Multi-Language Applications · · Score: 1
I've been a C++ coder for 5 years now. The project I work on is HUGE, many many lines of code, many different applications to manage and
then theres the database management too!

I can't imagine delivering a successful product to our customer without using some sort of scripting system (Perl preferable, but cshell works too) to manage all those applicatioins and keep everything running together happilly

As for the DB stuff, SQL*Plus with the ProC compiler has been awesome. So theres another case of a happy fit

As a c++ coder who specializes in Oragle SQL, I find sql*Plus a pefect fit
Also, I use cgi/perl scripts to manage the web pages and sometime even some XML. So I say, yes, you should use multiple languages if it makes sense for your project.

I've seen tons of great ideas posted so far, but in case someone wants to get more specific, as far as gender is concerned, here are a few ideas for that special female geek in your life:

$49.99 HoMedics US-2HDB Ultra Spa Pedicure Footbath & Massager (this little gadget is heaven for the feet - everyone should have one - even guys love it though they probably won't admit it)

$69.94 Prestone Jump It! Portable Power Source (ok, so its not exactly romantic, but it does show you care...my dad gave me one of these and I feel much safer commuting and traveling alone with it)

$39.99 Remington Paraffin Wax Hand Spa (so her fingers don't look like she writes code all day :)

$50.00 DreamTime Microwavable Foot Cozys (one of the ways to a woman's heart is through her feet - again, I bet guys would like these too even though they'd probably never actually buy them for themselves)

$20 gift certificate to Bath & Body Works (sometimes a gift certificate is better than guessing what her favorite scent is)

$49.99 Star Wars Rogue Leader: Rogue Squadron II

$40 1 lb. of Godiva chocolates(if you're gonna do chocolate, do it right...Godiva really does taste better :)

I can only plea to MTV and ask for them to play these videos in their intirety for me to see some night. Ahhhhh.....The dream begins....wbvg

  9. credibility/timeframe vs needed application on Just Around the Corner... · · Score: 2, Interesting
This is an intriguing article because not only are they rating the credibility of recent SF ideas, but they're trying to attach a timeframe to the ideas based on what we have today.

Whats even more interesting from my point of view is to ask the question: If you consider the actual applications, perhaps even getting very specific, do the ratings and timeframes still match up. Obviously rating credibility is subjective somewhat, anyway. And similarly, trying to attach a time frame to technology is still at best an educated guess.

But if looked at from the point of view that a specific application of one of the SF technologies would have significant beneficial impact on quality of life for a lot of people, then perhaps the time frames change out of necessity. What if we figure out that by uploading a short program into the brain we could signal synapses, neurons and such to keep seratonin levels at a therapeutic level for people suffering from depression and give them a much better quality of life. Thats just a rough example I throw out, but I bet there are some serious applications seen in technologies of the future that will actually boost the timeframe through basic need.

    Anyone else think so? Comments?

Now, on to my real question here:

Has anyone compared the IBM DeskStar performance for high res vid capture, editing and transfer to DVD/SVHS? Up until recently I have used Maxtors, but the company I bought my editing machine from has changed over to the DeskStars. I was ready to try it until I read about all the problems with the larger drives.
