Exactly, why single out {insert big corporation that screws you}? Lets get to the real problem.
Its very easy for people to whine about a computer company because there is this technology curve that not everyone wants to keep up with. In truth though, a lot of big companies are getting away with lousier customer service, greed and less than ethical treatment of their customers. We just find more voices to scream when it comes to things that the average person doesn't want to take the time to understand--or can't.
This used to be a political issue but I think its pretty across the board now. Its equal-opportunity getting screwed by all kinds of huge corporations, available 24/7 to anyone willing to pay.

I'm sure its very quiet indeed! You're one brave soul. One computer fire has made me paranoid forever.:) But I guess if you're only playing Quake at lunch then your probably ok without the fan.
Damn, I'm jealous that you can play at lunch. Wish our company wasn't so stingy and we could too! Where do you work, are they hiring in Colorado??
Ouch! That hurts.:( Umm, karma "whoring" is not my goal. Well played? Whatever dude. Truth be told I know very little about karma at all and haven't bothered to figure it out.
Yeah, I've made a lot of posts today on this article because I've been spending the last two weeks researching my a$$ off at THG and other places as I get ready to build a new gaming machine on a tight budget. I have this huge web page in front of me full of all the useful links to reviews and comparisons and benchmarks and product info that I've been compiling. So pardon me if I was trying to point folks in the direction of some of the interesting information from my research that I wanted to share with the/. community, when I came across an article on the topic of graphics cards for gaming machines!
Sheesh! Its been awhile since I've had time to/., I'd forgotten what a tough crowd it is.
If you've ever seen me post before, I'd be really really surprised, cause usually I haven't had much to say that adds value to the discussion. In this case, I was just trying to be nice. I enjoy the interesting information other people post, and it was nice to be able to contribute some back, hopefully. Being called a whore isn't nice.:( Not everyone on/. wants to be a Karma Deity ya know? Though now I kinda wish I could mod, cause I almost feel like your comment is flamebait meant to piss me off. Well, it worked.
Maybe there were some deals made behind the scenes, but I don't see any evidence that that kind of situation, expecially if it was one employee that didn't have permission from the big guys on top, discredits THG reviews. The reviews about processors seem to go back and forth between Intel and AMD most of the time. (I haven't read the latest article, so I can't say which one they like at the moment.) In fact THG made it pretty clear in this review that they were disappointed with the Athlon XP 3200+.
I take everything I read with a grain of salt these days --THG, Yahoo!, Google,/. and the zillions of other articles I read online included. I think you have to in the world we live in. I still consider THG a useful source, thier reviews are more thorough and detailed than 90% of the other hardware reviews I find online. So what if so-and-so might be in bed with so-and-so on occasion...unfotunately, it happens all the time in big business and media. We'd all be hard pressed to find a resource thats completely ethical as well as credible ALL the time.
Which card has the better fan? I can only find stuff that says the NVidia fan is loud. Unfortunately, I need to know this stuff cause I'm a little disaster prone, and both these cards sound like they can get fairly hot.
I agree. Though the serious gamer with an Uber system would go on and on about which card is best for which game and exactly why using alot terminology like FPS and vertex-shader, none of it would really apply to a casual gamer like me -nor would always being on the bleeding edge of graphics card technology. Especially with the prices. Honestly, both cards would blow away my crappy Matrox something-or-other from about 3 years ago and impress the socks off me, but realistically how many folks could afford to shell out that kind of cash on a regular basis each time a better one comes out and/or would want to.
I agree the benchmarks are iffy at best when issued by the company trying to sell the products. There is an interesting article about this kind of thing specific to the 5900's successor at Tom's Hardware Guide that details the benchmark war between NVidia and ATI.
You have to take benchmarks like this in context and with a grain of salt.
I like the reviews on Tom's Hardware Guide too. Theres a nice review of the GeForce FX 5900 that includes comparisons to both the Radeon 9800s. There's also a comparison between the Radeon 9800 256 vs the Radeon 9800 128 with some benchmarks and a little bit about previous comparisons to GeForce cards. Sounds like they favor the NVidia cards for now.
The guy is convicted on conspiracy charges and receives this $500/month fine until some ridiculous amount of money is paid to companies that he didn't end up ripping off yet. I understand that he broke the law by making the device and conspiring to sell it, so he goes to jail and pays a fine. But why pay that money to companies that didn't take any financial hits beyond legal costs. Shouldn't the money go to pay for the criminal investigation and locking the guy up as opposed to these companies. I can understand if the guy has to pay for the any legal fees the companies paid, but I can't believe they are THAT high. Is this punative damages or something? Are the companies mentally scarred knowing that someone almost ripped them off?
The way this punishment is handed down strikes me as a bit odd because it sounds like the companies wanted some formula applied to $900M and the fine total ends up being only *smirk* $180M. Regardless of how ridiculous either of those numbers are, the actual fine is considerably less than the $900M the company claims it would have lost. So is the message from the judge that the money wasn't the point? I guess we'd have to be privy to this formula that was used.
Why is the fine ordered to be paid off in such a way that no one will ever see very much of the money anyway? I can't figure out what point this makes, especially with a 5 year federal prison term attached?
An estimated 3 million people illegally watch satellite television using devices that unscramble satellite TV signals. The industry estimates it loses $4 billion a year in revenue. [excerpt from the Orlando Sentinal article]
Maybe this huge fine for a crime that didn't do any monetary damages yet, is somehow covering the costs of other similar crimes that are actually being committed? Like some sort of twisted subsidies? Perhaps thats why its so high? Shouldn't all the companies getting ripped off have to split it then? Something is fishy here, maybe its just the way I interpret the article...
Comments? Explanations from any legal brains out there?
I'll admit, I have trouble feeling sorry for any of those companies when I'm paying $50/month for "basic" cable that sucks and they are cleaning up on my addiction to Iron Chef....
The parent post hardly provides any information or insight for me to think twice before bashing SCO. Its misleading at best.
First of all, the post contradicts its own statement that the protest "was taken in good spirits by pretty much everyone". The author goes on to state that he/she isn't even sure that no one misinterpreted the SCO signs. Its really just his/her guess that everyone else found it funny. Comparing people to Hitler, making light of significant historical events that had huge casualties and singling out specific people isn't light-hearted, joking, funny humor - its satire or the stuff political cartoons are made of, even worse its what controversial cable network commentaries that claim to be news shows use to get people's attention. (Basically, this kind of stuff that is guaranteed to offend someone, regardless of the intentions.) These kind of catalytic comparisons utilized at protests in outdoor public places aren't what the status quo implicitly sees as "fun" or "funny". In fact, I don't think protests are typically seen as fun events. (Aren't there so many better ways to spend a Friday?) This "protest" is starting to sound like a party.
Next, I fail to see how portraying the whole event as more of a party than a protest is causing me to think before bashing SCO (or anyone). Obviously, if the protested issues are going to court, its not much of a party for anyone, except possibly legal parties who might end up making money.
In defense of the quoted poster, we have no idea of the original context. All we see is this post. But that just begs the question of why this is relevant information even more.
Before suggesting that there is another side to SCO's response to be found in this information, at least present some clear evidence within an established context.
>What's the best Doom mod you've used? >Personally, I always dug the twilight zone mods!
There was an Alien mod about 9 years ago that was so fun to play with the lights off. I very frequently screamed and almost had to go turn the lights back on to continue... It was the combo of the sound fx and alien sprites!! Scary stuff! Fun as everything though...ah the good o'le days of deathmatch over a slow modem on a pentium 90. (It rocked at the time!) I could still frag all night if I only had the free time I had back in school.
Does anyone remember the Barney mod with Monty Python sfx... "Help Help, I'm being Repressed" squeals Barney as I show him the power of my BFG!

I'm surprised with all the political tension around the world that there aren't any super offensive mods with actual faces and such lurking around....perhaps they exist and I missed them.
My friend is spending $35+ a week on drops he has to use during the day. He also has to use some special salve at night that costs $20 a week. (He uses all these drops for comfort and to be able to see better now). These drops are all OTC products, so they aren't covered by insurance or FSAs. He paid about $3k for the surgery after insurance. Thats almost $6k not counting loss of income from work missed. Thats $220 a week - enough for a car payment.
Anyway, the monetary cost is not working out in his favor. Granted, he is in that small percentage of LASIK patients that ends up with major problems. His corneal flaps stick to his eyelids because his eyes are so dry, he almost ripped the flap off. He now sees two of everything, and will have to wear glasses and have more surgeries to try to correct the problem. (more $$$$) He has to get tear duct plugs inserted to help with the dry eyes. Constant headaches and blurriness are other side-effects he's having. (He went to a surgeon with lots of prior surgeries and an outstanding reputation. Unfortunately, someone ends up being in those 1% who have complications.)
I've thought about the surgery a lot, worrying about damaging my precious eyesight and facing pain and gross stuff. Those are all bad enough. I never stopped to think about the costs adding up, or how damaged vision could affect my ability to provide for myself or my family in the future. Even those of us who don't stare at a monitor for the majority of the day probably need our eyes for work in addition to play.
Keep the money factor in mind too when you consider your choices.
One thing to keep in mind, not all anime you come across on the web or in RL is legit. I've seen tons of bootlegs for sale, even after anime is becoming more available domestically. Watch out for independent stores/sites in particular. Some bootleg packaging is looking more legit than licensed stuff. I can think of a half dozen sites/stores that carry bootlegs, and I've seen several mentioned already, but I hesitate to name them for fear of being sued or something. Not only are you ripping off the creators and giving money to immoral types, but you generally get really crappy quality. The packaging is NOT representative of the product at all. You are likely to find horrible translations with unreadable grammar, poorly timed subtitles, subtitles that are a bad color or cut off at the ends and just low grade video and audio in general. Sometimes its a copy of a copy of a copy of a copy of some guys VHS tape off of tv, even though its on DVD.
And finally, because I've spent around $10k on anime in the past 10 years, I'll list a few of the places the majority of money has gone to and I've never had any problems with (DVD bootlegs, bad service, etc...):
Bill was in the scene where they try to cross that snowy peak. (The one that I'm not even going to attempt to spell here lest the Tolkien experts scream at me.) If you look behind the hobbits all huddled up together, they're dragging poor Bill along- he appears to be kneeling (if such is possible with a pony.)
First of all, I wasn't defending his choices, only his motivations. Even if I follow your reasoning, which implies that he gave NSync the part as extras to draw in extra millions, it doesn't make sense.
Two of the guys from NSync made a movie earlier this year. It didn't even break even, despite the fact that it _starred_ boyband members. I'd wager that most people didn't even know it was out. How could having these guys as extras for a few seconds in a scene where you barely have time to see/recognize them draw in "extra millions" if no one went to see their other movie? Lucas isn't a dummy, he knows that by doing something like this its going to rumple some feathers. Do you really think it didn't occur to him that he might piss off the huge fanbase of non-15-yearold-girls with this decision? Like I stated in my previous message, he doesn't make movies so that they're popular. He makes movies that he wants to make. Maybe he's pompous or arrogant in that way, but a sellout? No way.
Go ahead and take your respect elsewhere, but don't forget that there was a reason he had so much respect in the first place. He made some great movies. Good enough in fact, that I don't even think a small cameo by anyone (short of a terrorist) could ruin it.
Maybe you should chill out and be a little less quick to describe the motivations of someone you don't seem to know much about. Lucas does what he wants becase *HE* wants to, the guy doesn't cater to markets or demographics. He's stated this in more than one interview. This is painstakingly obvious if you look back on his career: THX-1138, American Grafitti, Episode V. These were huge risks financially at the time.
Lucas' only "bottom line" is his imagination. I'm no MBA, but if I were worried about the demographics I sure as hell wouldn't bring JarJar back after the backlash from Ep. I. (Even the kids thought JarJar was annoying!) Furthermore, the guy finances his own projects, he isn't doing this for some "market".
Sold out implies that he did it for money. Since when does he need the money? Regardless of whether or not the movie makes any money, he's got enough money to make hundreds more, so I don't think "sold out" is quite the right terminology.
from the parent article:
"...cause most women in tech are inferior..."
Excuse me?!? I have to totally refute and resent this comment. Perhaps there are less women in "tech" jobs and maybe there are women who are only in the tech field to get into management.
less != inferior
Saying that most of the women IN tech jobs are inferior is total BS. That is a fine example of sexual discrimination, which happens to be on-topic right now, because the original message asks about discrimination in the IT world in general.
I am a developer, who happens to be a female. In my measly 5.5 years of professional IT experience and the 4 years before that of academic IT experience, I have seen no evidence to support your claim. The women I have worked with in college and in the real world are just as competent or moreso than the other gender.
I have faced discrimination based on my gender in the IT field numerous times. I have found that I will have to work twice as hard to get as much recognition for my work, in a lot of cases because of people who think like the author of this post. The way I face and deal with discrimination is to:
Blow it off and not take it personally - I remind myself that the discrimination is based on a preconcieved notion, not my personal case
Constructively attempt to communicate to the offender that the stereotype is just that, a stereotype and not necessarily representative of my work
Sadly enough, I do not often raise a huge stink about sexual discrimination. Experience in my field has taught me that it is a powerful enough problem that I can easily be black-balled by complaining about it to the wrong people.
Working even harder and expecting less recognition - it sucks, but its true
Actively seek out positions and career paths that surround me by the people I have found to be less discriminating. This is probably the best of all the reactions to discrimination. I HAVE found male supervisors and peers that see the quality of work unjaded by my gender. Something to remember in the case of gender discrimination though is that females can be just as discriminatory against females.
