I have been looking to get into the biz for near on 3 years now to no avail. I moved to Chicago (one of the worst hit IT cities) 3 weeks after sept 11 (the worst time). I average about 3 interviews/year, and only one really promising prospect/year. I currently work at a Border's for $7.50 with a bunch of kids. I just wish I could afford to get drunk and drowned my sorrows. Oh well. At east those Bush tax cuts are a big help!
I am relatively new to the CS world compared to those "wizards" but my favorite class a University was a ASM course (which was required) Our first proramming assignment was to program a keyboard controller, that took all the scan codes from the keyboard and allowed one to type on screen. The class was delightfully difficult. We had a crappy textbook, but we had the Motorola 68000 "manual" basically a brochure with all the instructions, their opcodes, operands and other basic info. The sheet was worth nearly its weight in gold. This course gave me a deep understanding into computers and the logical thought required to program well. I definitely think it is a good idea to learn assembly.
Anyone remember this unfortunate broadcast decision? It's a shame, SciFi still occasionally runs the 13 episodes filmed for Brimstone, looking back, it is still a good show. Bummer.
