I get that this is the Nobel prize - but these people appear to have already accomplished something. Indeed, the noteworthy achievement for which they are receiving the prize is over a decade in the past. I thought the Nobel prize was awarded to encourage responsible action? It's a "call to action", not a fuddy duddy pat on the back from the good-old-boys club. Look at the photo at the linked article - three white males. By the way, what the hell is up with "dividing" a Nobel prize like it's some sort of peach pie? Half for one white male, while the other two share the other half? Who comes up with this stuff?
A prominent American celebrity called for exactly that a few days ago, and nobody batted an eyebrow. What do you think would happen if we went to the highly credible Wall Street protests and asked around there?
There's no story here. Here's the original report, from the Volokh Conspiracy, a card-carrying rightwing blog. That enough should discredit the story. Second, the entire point of this blog posting is to point out that the politicians involved were all Democrats, something the Techdirt article (correctly) discards from the narrative as irrelevant. So, this is just a hit piece, no story other than "scary Demoncrats", everybody can go on to the next article.
Question: why is it that when any question of labor comes up, the ghosts of Dickens are brought out to scare us? And yet, whenever someone says something like millionaires should be executed or sent to re-eduction camps, comparing it to 20th century communism is out the window as a comparison? Just curious.
Based on your comment above, I let Firefox update when the nag screen came up (AGAIN!). It's at v7.01 now, and what happened? "Your plugins are incompatible and have been disabled." OK, search for updates. Nothing. Fiddlerhook and Firebug, both of which I used, on the occasion I decided to use Firefox. Oh well! I'm a dumb user and deserve it, thank you developers from freeing me of compatibility.
The internet never "used to be" like that, and USENET was never full of porn and spam, either. Believe it or not, there were people online before you ever got your first AOL floppy disk delivered to your house by junk mail.
My experience is having my carefully collected plugins broken by updates. You check back at the maintainer's page, and the last note was in 2008. I love how the idea that it's OK to break perfectly good plugins is acceptable to you as long as they're not popular.
This is what "reputation" does to you. It allows people to assign motives to your actions, based on your previous motives. Microsoft has a long history of deliberately evil behavior.
Global warming is scientifically proven already, the debate ended a few years ago. Didn't you get the memo? More evidence, as if it was needed, and denialists do what they do - deny. Oil company is paying you to post, right?
The addons I want to keep? Sorry, I've never had this experience. It's more like, "the addons I want to permanently disable as they won't be updated to the latest version because the creator finished his project and moved on with his life". Seriously, a browser whose entire idea is 'you can extend it' combined with constant compatibility-breaking updates?
Look at the statistics on cdc.gov. They don't lie, and they don't paint a pretty picture. Honestly, I'm surprised CDC is allowed to publish them at all, due to how politically inconvenient the stats are.
You are what the African-American community calls an "Uncle Tom" (A black man who will do anything to stay in good standing with "the white man" including betray his own people) or a "race traitor" (one who has turned against their race and/or ethnicity in favor of those who would persecute them. i.e. a self loather and/or one who is ashamed of their heritage.)
Are you in the Tea or Republican Party? That's a good way to self-diagnose. Were you the only black kid at your all-white school?
Engaging in high-risk behavior is stupid. Just say no to crossing the highway at rush hour. Just say no to flying on Third World airlines with spotty safety records. Just say no to drinking household chemicals.
AIDS isn't like any other disease. You can catch pneumonia or develop cancer through no fault of your own. Contracting HIV requires that you engage in very specific behaviors that are well-known to cause disease. In 2009, 41,769 people in America were diagnosed with HIV through sexual contact or drug use: in other words, being stupid. 76 got it from hemophilia, blood transfusion, or perinatal exposure: the "no fault of their own" disease cause. You do the math.
It is not difficult to "rememberize" 10-key layout versus reverse 10-key. This "feat" is well within the capabilities of subhumans who live in flyover territory, much less elite geeks who can get their questions approved on slashdot.org. I had no problem with it myself, back when I worked for a phone company and had to switch back and forth between the IBM-PC 10-key pad and the telephone reverse 10-key. The mouthbreathers I worked with picked it up after a few weeks.
Actually, now that I think about it, what's the big deal? Any uber-geek should be able to adjust to these circumstances quite quickly. And honestly: times aren't like they were years ago when I had to dial 50 phone numbers per day, and enter 50 results into the computer. Who the hell, in this day and age, sits down next to a "push-button" landline telephone and keys in the numbers for his friends? We all use mobile phones these days, it's all in the phone book. In the last...five, ten years? I've had to use my 31337 ten-key skillz exactly...zero times. When you meet a new person, you just punch in their number once: either by soft keyboard (iPhone) or by 1234567890 above qwertyuiop (one of those old-fashioned "blackberry" phones).
Oh, I think I see. On the submitter's web page, we can see the following bit of sublime insight:
Why are the lights in microwave ovens inconsistent with the lights in refrigerators? The light in the refrigerator is on when the door is open, and supposedly off when the door is shut. The light in the microwave is on when the door is shut, and off when the door is open.
Decoding a compressed JPEG image took a non-trivial amount of CPU power back then, too. Put 20 of them on a web page and watch your computer grind to a halt decompressing them.
You know, that condescending attitude that they need to be 'helped' in order to become 'normal' (i.e. just like you) is the worst sort of racism. If they want to drink, that's their choice and nobody can tell them otherwise. So-called welfare is their money, they deserve it 100% and they'll spend it however they please.
Hey, suppressing facts to support a narrative has a long history. It's respectable as long as your cause supports the correct political outcome. Reference:
"Accounts of the Soviet labor system should be suppressed even if true, since otherwise the French working class might become anti-Soviet."
-- Jean-Paul Sartre, 1933
So, which side of the conflict will the journalist be representing? If she represents the mainstream liberal/left journalism, she'll be ostensibly with the soldiers but her heart will be with the ununiformed combatants. The plot of the game will undoubtedly involve "reciting the narrative" which will include ignoring every virtuous and heroic act of the soldiers, and highlighting every time they spit on the sidewalk. I mean, - you didn't get the memo?
The game's final cutscene will undoubtedly be the player receiving the Pulitzer Prize or possibly the Nobel Peace Prize for reporting atrocities. How could the game possibly end otherwise?
Hey, it's not all bad, WIPO enforcement is one of the reasons that China's cleaning up its act these days. It's not like the old days with DVD shops and fake software everywhere. I can't even hardly find counterfeits any more.
! This sounds like a great idea for those of us who might be unemployed. It's a bit below the $20/hour minimum living wage, but it's a start. I wonder about the career progression opportunities, though.

Kids don't belong on the bridge of the USS Enterprise
This was BEFORE the greencard spam. As a matter of fact, nobody even called it "spam" because the word hadn't been appropriated yet. Newbie.

"Women and Men" is about genocide...pretty poor taste. I hope they dumped it from their discography and paid a large self-imposed fine for that one.

How is this not racist? How is this not xenophobic? Slashdot needs a new moderation "+1 Bigoted (but in a good way)"
Meaning: Genius is largely the result of hard work, rather than an inspired flash of insight.
