Good points and, no, sarcasm wasn't intended. Just that it takes two to tango.
There are moderates and extremists on both sides of the aisle. But when level-headed moderates are in the majority on both sides, things actually tend to get done in a rational fashion.
When one side is out of whack, like the Republicans these days, it's essentially hopeless. Then it's all about demagoguery, not progress.
Protip: Have everyone drink lots of water a few hours before the contest. It clears out the bad stuff (smelly) and provides plenty of fuel for the festivities. Joy all around.
Disagree with your statement "If Mims were proposed to teach an engineering course, there's no doubt that he's qualified". According to Wikipedia:
"Mims entered Texas A&M University in the fall of 1962 as a physics major. The mathematics courses convinced him to major in liberal arts. He graduated in 1966 with a major in government with minors in English and history."
Engineering is all about math. A closer qualification would be as a vocational electronics teacher.
Ok, that's true and I wish them well. But my post was coming from the "scratch an itch" user perspective rather than "change the world". And since my low risk tolerance doesn't mesh very well with the whole closed source+activation thing, it just won't work in my case. There's plenty of businesses that don't care about that sort of thing so they'll probably do well.
I downloaded it then realized it's weird installing something in a linux distro that requires activation. Especially knowing no source code is available. It just feels...slimy and scary all at once.
Like taking a shortcut through that dark alleyway with the bum standing in the shadows. He's probably harmless but hey, why take a chance.
But it's their code so it's their perogative. I'll pass.
I get to google.com by typing it into Bing and clicking on the top result. That way I can encourage competition by supporting Bing's search volume, but get the best results by using Google.
Because calculus, chemistry, biology, physics, etc. all help the development of critical thinking and curiosity. It's inherent in the process. Which (imho) is crucial for the individual and society as a whole.
That's not to denigrate history, music or the arts. Quite to the contrary, there's critical thinking there too. A well-rounded person should know these things.
There's way too many folks walking around that think they know science stuff because, well, they think they know it. They think theories are just theories and have no clue that behind the curtain, there's real hard work involved with knowing stuff and making stuff. They only care to see it as magic.
And this lack of critical thinking causes problems all throughout society from discerning scams, to public policy creation to plain out-right kookiness on display every day. Around the water cooler, TV, radio, newspapers and especially the internet.
An educated society with well-rounded citizens will fare better than the opposite. Just a thought.
Yes, I can definitely sympathize with your perspective. I was there once too;)
It's similar to a weekend warrior trying to work on a racecar. Because of their lack of experience, the transmission looks inefficient, engine won't tune correctly, etc. It would be very frustrating to them, just as Drupal is to you.
But to the experienced mechanic it's completely different experience because they know it so intimately, and they're working with a top-notch framework to start with.
Drupal is similar with respect to your experience level with computers. But in time, as you gain more experience with programming languages, try it again. It's a much different view once you see if from the big picture.
Absolutely agree. If you're not a solid PHP programmer and don't spend the necessary time learning how hooks work, it's easy to run into the exact same experience you had. Drupal really isn't for the plug-and-play hobbyist crowd but a professional programmer can easily make it do what he wants.
FYI, for a snap-together site my best advice would be to try Wordpress next time. It's perfect for both hobbyists and non-technical folks. Hope that helps.
Quick, someone grab the Modalizer gun. We're gonna need a mixed dosage on this one...a healthy dose of -1 Troll, lots of -1 Clueless and some -1 Flamebait.
Then throw in a few drops of +1 Funny just for kicks.

Common sense ideas like yours won't be possible until moderate Republicans take back the party.
Until then, science will remain a big juicy target for budget cuts.
This country is whistling past the graveyard when it comes to science and future economic prosperity.
You had me at "hymen".

Hey, lay off Microsoft. Those jokes aren't funny anymore.
While we're on the topic, this one blocks Newscorp articles (Fox News and WSJ) from displaying in Google news:

Now that's a fascinating post (seriously). There's something interesting going on here but I can't quite figure out what it is.
Good one. Snorg, Thinkgeek, etc. need to put that on a t-shirt.

Agreed. How about "freetard"?

Corporate astroturfing is different than free speech (non-defamatory expression of one's views).
Hopefully most people would have the savvy to react differently to each.

Win-win ;)
Umm, no. He didn't read the article, and you didn't bother reading his post. And, by definition, karma whoring is copy-pasting without using anon.
Do you find it ironic that your blatant attempt at karma whoring is essentially equivalent to JC Penney's efforts with link building?
Let's see if the end result is the same...

It wasn't always this way but legally, they are property. See the Zuccarini case (a soap opera in itself):

Domains are becoming very valuable assets so how they're treated legally is important.

Best explanation so far, thanks.

Agreed. Though this particular asshole deserves the full stretch.
Pun intended.
Thanks for the update. We'll be waiting anxiously for further updates.
