"I'm not surprised that colleges would complain about Napster bandwidth requirements because I hear the same wringing of hands over education in general. I hear there are too many applicants to top colleges. Excuse me, but wouldn't it be good to educate more students? Instead of saying there are too many applicants, why don't you work on increasing the availability of high-quality course offerings? I know you don't have tenure-track positions for all the people awarded doctorates, but it's not your job to offer everyone a position; it's your job to educate them."
Excellent point.
Peer-to-peer, like many other technologies, has it's advantages and disadvantages. For some purposes (not just file-swapping), it's absolutely ideal (OK, OK so I'm a fan of SETI@Home:) ).
There's nothing quite as satisfying as having academics argue for perfectly logical systems that will also allow me to continue downloading porn, warez and mp3s.
This is the kind of typical crap argument that infuriates me. Blame the technology, right? Wrong.
Just because you have a new ABILITY does not mean that it should be your practice. If photographers are deleting secondary, seemingly 'unneeded' shots but it is determined that these shots ARE important, then DUH: make the policy NOT TO DELETE THEM. It's not difficult; the metaphor is already there for photographers: when your memory is full, simply snap in a new memory card/cartridge/stick/whatever. Just like film. Don't have enough memory with you? This is equivalent to not having enough film with you, which I'm sure would get a photographer castigated real quick.
The problem is with the process not the technology. If this woman had her way and knew technology, I can see her creating WORM memory for photography. How ass-backwards!
Why is Windows the only operating system that comes without any type of multiple boot loaded.
Gee, I don't know, could it be that the VAST MAJORITY of Win users don't have any other OS on their systems, while a SIGNIFICANT NUMBER of Linux/other OS are forced to cohabitate with a Win install?
It's like asking why there's a "share the road with motorcylces" bumper sticker and no "share the road with cars".
I'd like to throw my hat in the ring in support of firewire. I have a firewire pci card purchased for use with a DVcamcorder. I'd love to have more devices that use firewire instead of stinky ol USB.
Time and again, Linksys has come through for me. Best price/performance anywhere.
I have the 4 port kvm switch using a MS optical mouse (USB, using the PS/2 adaptor). Works fine with both a Linux and Win2k box.
The one odd and annoying thing about this KVM switch is the key sequence to switch: CTRL-ALT-SHIFT, then the NUMBER (IE 1-4) then ENTER. Why Enter? it's not like I'll have a 2 digit number... there are only 4 ports!
The linksys 2 port is much friendlier: double-tap CTRL to switch....
What if all the mental energy, the rage on Slashdot message boards had been concentrated on building solid business models in enterprise computing? Just how big could Linux get?
What kind of crap argument is this? A very cutesy pipe dream to be sure, but it shows that the author completely misses the point.
People work on the Linux Desktop because they want to. Or because they see that there is a useful function|feature|tidbit they would find useful and have the ability to create. It is just BECAUSE there is no Larry Ellison-style taskmaster telling you what project to work on that Linux has come as far as it has. And it will continue to grow, organicly, haphazardly, and without a strong cohesive marketroid "business model".
Hmm more like:
Grandma,"That shady nerdboy told me I could drop AOL and use his scary wireless thing. Now my computer has this blue screen! ITS HIS FAULT"
And I'm sure it will get you invited to ALL the best parties: "Hello? We're having a fine old party here and all the incrowd is enjoying dowloading porn, but it's not going very fast. Could you come over and take a look at it? Oh and be sure to use the servants entrance."
I love how this is Paypal's fault! You said "Paypal, pay this guy." They did. The guy didn't ship product. Just like if you handed him cash, he put it in the drawer and flipped you the bird. You need to take it up with the vendor. Not being able to get satisfaction from the vendor is no reason to blame Paypal.
You paid with US funds? Maybe you can complain the the Fed. AFter all, the money is "backed by the full faith and trust of the US gub'mint".
How is this insightful? He's making up the 'fact' that you have to recharge 4 times....
If you clicked the link to the press release, you'd see that the battery life is estimated at 6 months! I assume it doesn't take as much power as you'd think if they've made it all solid state.
Excellent point.
Excellent pointing out of an excellent point.
Uh, SETI@Home is NOT peer-to-peer.

Canada and Britain? Aren't they the 51st and 52nd states yet?
The hiring of new engineers to fix technical issues® is a patented process.

I make a wise-ass one liner and I get a +5 in no time. THIS is an important, well-thought out argument! People need to read this shit!

My Linux box already has 2 PS2 ports! I have my mouse and keyboard plugged into them.
Much of adequacy is satire. The fact that many people read and seriously argue in favor/against the stories is truly frightening.
Just look at their "mission statement" for the giveaway.
Are you now, or have you ever been associated with the Open Source Party?

Probe Uranus.
You don't read the thread before posting do you? That was black and white; this one does color (at least to the PC).
Har har. Actually the main character in the movie Memento could really have used that feature!

A high-fiber motherboard has been linked to decreased risk of colon cancer. Aren't you willing to pay a little more for that kind of peace of mind?
