I'd guess in that case, they would just confiscate the computer as they are allowed to do and your company can hash it out with them... however, once property falls into gov't hands, it's not very easy to get back, innocent or no.

Returning from numerous business trips to Mexico over the years, I've received extra scrutiny twice. Once because I had declared liquor on a prior trip and I was over my limit. I actually got to keep the booze and was told to 'watch it' next time. The next time, I came back with some medication for dysentery and looked pretty rough (my next stop was a hospital for a week long stay) The customs guy asked, "Where did you get this strange Mexican medicine?" I answered, "From a strange Mexican doctor. Where is the bathroom?" The guy laughed and sent me on my way before I shat on his floor.

I do this in case the laptop is stolen, but it works just as well for border security.

Our local community radio, WMNF, sponsors tons of small venue shows every year with awesome acts that will never make it to the Clear Channel scene... nor would they want to. Usually, it's no problem to get the CD autographed, or have a member of the band or crew take your money and say 'Thank you' like they mean it. If I do purchase RIAA music, it's from iTunes because I refuse to take 9 bullshit songs just to get the one piece I like.

    Geeze!

Don't you know that you put your cables up on risers? (http://www.cableisolators.com/index.html) Besides showing off your purchase, everyone that enters your room should know immediately that you're immune from floor borne vibrations, the harmful effects of the dielectric build up in carpet and they dissipate static charges away from your cables. Cable Isolators(TM) remove any minute layers of distortion and haze in your cables providing a clean background for your music to emerge. Cable Isolators(TM) also promote proper organization of your cables so power cords and signal cables are not laying next to one another which would cause interference.

Try this with your system - set the input to something that's not on or something you don't have hooked up, then crank the volume all the way to 10. Listen carefully. Then turn lights on and off, the TV on and off, make a cellphone call, turn the ceiling fan on and off.

Most of that can be written off to a lack of power supply filtration and/or shielding on the input cables or the amp circuity itself. Yes, quality shielded interconnects make a difference, but they make a much bigger difference BEFORE amplification than after. Speaker wire? Not so much.

Then, instead of writing to slashdot, write to the OLPC project and your school board with sound proposals of how our own children can benefit from the things we are 'giving' away to others.

My 6 year old has her own PC already, but I feel strongly enough about this to do exactly what I've suggested above. Are you sure that they are speed limiters and not RPM limiters? Many motorcycles do in fact have rev limiters which kick in at or just beyond redline, but they work in every gear. In first you might be limited to 75 MPH, but in second, you could hit 90. And so on up through top gear (about 155MPH at 9k RPM on my bike).

The purpose has nothing to do with limiting the speed at which your wheels turn (MPH), but everything to do with preventing you from fragging your motor. Most cars top out at 120 or so simply because they don't have the right mix of HP/aerodynamics/gearing to go faster. It's my guess that any similar circuitry in cars is to protect the motor and not the driver.

That said... I'm sure it's heresay, but there is supposedly a gentleman's agreement between motorcycle manufacturers to limit street production machines to below 200MPH, but I always figured the darwin factor would take over there so why bother. A 50MPH machine is every bit as deadly as a 200MPH machine if you are driving/riding beyond your abilities or the conditions.

Also, with regards to states requiring different equipment, the only one I've EVER heard of is California requiring higher emmision standards. The NHTSA pretty much sets the standards for equipment at federal levels since it would be pretty impractical to enforce codes from one state to the next on our interstate highways....but now we're getting WAY off topic :)

I agree that outlawing P2P to limit illegal downloading is like outlawing cars to limit speeding.

While they may not be Tom Cruise or Catherine Zeta Jones's, none of these people are sitting around idle. Hank Azaria & Harry Shearer have done quite well for themselves either writing, producing, or working as character actors, and Dan Castellenta & Nancy Cartwright have been (and still are) prolific voiceover talents. ...if you value your laptop. I ride an average of 20k miles per year on my motorcycle and my powerbook G4 never leaves my side. Last summer, after exiting the NJ Turnpike, my Zero Centurian parted company with the K1200RS's rear seat when a strap worked loose. The case was flattened by both wheels of a following car and came to rest beneath another car that managed to straddle it. I parked the bike, darted through traffic to recover my baby and was horrified at the carnage. However, the laptop worked fine when I got back to the side of the road and opened it up. I was pissed about the loss of the case, but I figured it was gods way of telling me it's time to backup my drive.

There is no soft case, no matter how hip or trendy, that can offer anywhere near the protection of a solid, foam lined case. I'm now using a Pelican 1490, which is a little closer fit for the powerbook, and it offers a watertight seal which the Zero did not. The Pelican also has a ring on each side for attaching a nicely padded shoulder strap if you are worried about comfort. You can also use them to attach a bicycle cable & lock to your wrist if you're worried about someone walking off with it.

If you care about your gear, put it in a real case. Anvil, Pelican, & Zero are a few names that professionals use to protect expensive equipment. $200 ~ $400 is a cheap insurance policy for a $3500 laptop.
