Is he being a jackass? Or maybe a little turnabout is fairplay?
When I thought about installing linux on my kids machine the first thing I did was go to every website that they visited to see if Netscape 6.2 would read the pages properly. barbie.com was the only one that didn't require Windows. Problems ranging from shockwave to Active-X, made it too much of a pain, for this newbie to make the plunge.
There is so much of the web now that caters to Windows / Mac that any other operating system is treated like someone that lives in a cabin in the woods.
Is this guy being a jackass, probably. Is the guy that tells you, you can't enter a resturant because you have on jeans instead of a suit, being a jackass? probably. Any difference? not really
The latest stable version of Freesco is version 2.7. It is running kernel 2.0.36 (or 38).
I can say from experience that it is VERY stable. Six months (at least) up time. It is a floppy distro, but it can installed on a HD, and has a large selection of packages that it can run.
If you think about it, Mr Glass isn't really that silly. He's just a sad man who thinks that by keeping software closed-source will help the competiton. The 'if its free it'll screw the rest of the world' arguement is as lame as I've ever heard. If I was an IT manager and one of my engineers install some mission critical software, just because it was free, I'd fire him. What if he was the only one who knew how to use it? What if he quit, or got hit by a bus. I've lost my support and I have to scramble to find a replacement.
I just can't believe some people. Reminds me of an old manager I had.

I find it interesting that when the media talks about tragies, they always have "knee-jerk reactions". The first and foremost is to limit personal freedom. I remember the 'Save our Children from Guns' campaign, that Columbine(sp) produced.
I need to state that I can not sympathize enough with the victims and their families of this tragic event. I do not think, however, throwing up roadblocks on major highways and requiring State Patrol 'Safety Checks' is the answer. Will every payphone have a sticker that it can be monitored and tape-recorded, because a terrorist might use it? America is the "GREATEST" country in the world because of one thing, Our freedom.
I would love to have world peace, but I'm not that naive. Barring that I would rather every country in the world 'feared' us. I'd rather we grew balls again and told countries that support terrorism, if you do, we will consider you an enemy.
There are pros and cons to every argument, but I can't believe that allowing more freedom to slip away is the answer.
The last Qbasic I can remember was on DOS 6.22. IBM bundled REXX with DOS 7. I think it went the way of DOS. A fine program but not enough of a money-maker.

What about Coils? or Damnation Alley?

I read Coils when I was in college. A man who can talk to computers. For the late '70s that was an incredible book.
I suggest you read Coils (co-wrote by Fred Saberhagen) and then all of the Amber series.

ATT@Home (My ISP) port scans my firewall every day for port 23 and port 21 (telnet and FTP). They neither asked for permission or state anywhere that they are going to do so. I find it interesting that their acceptable use policy allows them to do so. Which you can find out about AFTER you call and specifically ask. Personally, I think you should be happy knowing your firewall works. But that's just my opinion. Vertical

This is of course IMO. Flame away.
