I agree with the above, but I can tell you one very important thing. MAKE IT INTERESTING FOR THEM!!! I can not stress that enough. Heinlein had the ability to make his characters grow as the story progressed. I have always loved his story writing. And he never let technology bog down a story. Technology is a crutch to some writers...Look at StarWars II.

I have to say this....I have some Micropolis 5.25 FH 6.4gig SCSI HDs that get very hot....but they still run great. Maybe the 'rated operating temps' have changed, or lowered, or maybe, just maybe, hard drive quality is less than it used to be.
On a side note...I was being sarcastic about the Maxtor / Seagate thing. I have had Maxtor / Conner / Quantum / Western Digital hds crash on me, and I have one of every brand (well maybe not any Conners) still running somewhere in my house.
I agree.....I was being a little sarcastic...I have 4 - 3.2gig Seagates in a Samba box that has not hickuped once. I think there are more factors than brand name that dictate failure rate.
But seriously, I have a 5400rpm 1.2g Maxtor that has been in use for over 4 years. I had a 7200rpm 20g Seagate that crashed after 14 months in a machine. I think the combination of high rpms with super dense platters is what is causing the most problems.
Of course, My father thinks that people just don't give a shit about quality any more.....

I'm sorry my advice to use fiber over copper, bothered you.
I'm so sorry, I'll even explain to you why I gave that recommendation.
Mr. stone22 is going to go buy Cat 6 or Cat 7 (or what ever the company wants to call it, 6e, 6xp) and pay some joe (or do it himself) to run copper. Two or 3 months from that time he is going to notice that a run is operating at less than GigE speed (maybe less than 100base speed). He is going to have to find out why. Did the joe who ran it drape it over a florescent light? Around an electrical junction box? Put a kink in the cable? The troubleshooting list goes on. He looks bad because the new network isn't working.
If he lays fiber, half of his troubles go away. If he has to use copper he can then say to the powers-that-be, 'Yeah, we can use copper, but we will wind up paying more in the long run.'
If you want to run GigE in your basement, use Cat 5e. It was good enough for GigE before Cat 6 was a reality. If Mr stone22 wants to connect his servers to his hubs, he can use Cat 5e also.
So to answer the orginal question: I would use Cat 5e
While I can't insult you as well as the AC above, I do have to say that if you are seriously considering using this as a backbone pay the extra initial cash and lay fiber. You can go with MUCH longer runs, eliminate crosstalk, and generally find that life is much simplier. But if you have to have copper, Cat 5e UTP cable w/ RJ45s should be more than able to handle your GigE network.
Verizon is nothing compared to Ameritech. If you order DSL from anyone other than them in my town you can almost bet your line will be too long. My CO is a driving distance of less than 1 (ONE) mile. When Ameritech ran my line for Speakeasy DSL. It was tested at over >18000 feet. I have no idea how long it would be if Ameritech sold me the DSL. They decided not to roll it out.

In short, 80% of the people who read Slashdot are freeloaders who won't even pay to read their favorite web site.
What makes Slashdot such a great webpage? Is the ability to (most of the time) read about geek news? Or is the ability to read and discuss a certain post with thousands of technical savvy people?
I believe it is the second one. If you remove those 80% (the freeloaders) would you have the diversity? You'd probably have a lot less trolls, but I think you would lose a lot of good with the bad.
I belong to a great LUG which does not charge for membership. If they did, I wouldn't put as much effort into my time there. I try to give just as much as I get. Do I feel that I do? No, not really. I love going and hearing about aspects of Linux that I know nothing about and learning something new.
To tie that to your post, I feel the same way about Slashdot. I could pay for a news website, and get spoonfeed mass media trash, or exert my brain here on Slashdot. These freeloaders might be the very ones who give great info in AskSlashdot, or mirror slashdotted webpages. Pay to read their favorite webpage? They do! They try to give back to the Slashdot community as best as they can.
This is not meant to be a flamebait, you will notice I am logged in even. You seem to think cash is the ONLY method of paying for something. You have a lot to learn about life.
Personally I think, RPG is worse than Cobol as far as a programming language goes. It has the complexity (almost) of C and absolutely NONE of the benefits.
If you are going to make the change from OS/400 to Linux, convert your programs to C or even COBOL as suggested earlier. Or continue running it under OS/400. OS/400 is a fine OS regardless of it not being Linux. If you want/need to change to Linux it is for a reason, and that reason is almost surely to be written in C, so make a full change. It seems silly to me to change OSes and want to run the exact same programs that (should) run fine under OS/400. Maybe if you could explain WHY you need to change, suggestions would be a little easier.
Moving OS X to peecee hardware would bring much of that grief back into the user experience,
