  1. Old PowerMac works for me ... on Building an Energy Efficient, Always-On PC? · · Score: 1

Like some posters suggest, use a dedicated always-on machine.

You may go even lower than an EPIA processor.

My home server is a PowerMac 8200/100 (100MHz 603 CPU), which runs Debian just fine and draws around 30W according to Kill-O-Watt.

Because DSLRs are better for grab shots - my Rebel XT switches on instantaneously, the autofocus is quick, and there is almost no shutter delay.

Try taking pictures of a bunch of playing kids - its almost no doable with a non-SLR digital camera.

  3. Re:From the FAQ on Apple Powerbook and iBook Battery Recall · · Score: 5, Informative

It's not quite that dumb. There are/were notebooks that won't run without a battery installed, maybe due to the design of their power circuitry.

I remember the Powerbook 180, for instance.

    1. No virtual graphics adapter, so no X-Windows

But you can run an X server on Windows have the Linux apps talk to it, so this isn't really a limitation. The web site has some screenshots with KDE and Mozilla.

Come on - exactly the same arguments were raised in the late 80s with the advent of 1MBit DRAM chip. Most of these fears apparently were unfounded, or countered by technical measuers. Also, the technique for high reliability applications is not redundancy, but error correction; even high end Intel server chipsets support it nowadays.

  6. Do the reviewers have a clue? on New Low Cost DVD Burners Hit The Streets · · Score: 2, Interesting
I thought the review was OK, until I read at the end:

In our last test we loaded MusicMatch 8.0 and a 69 minute audio disc to test the drives capabilities while ripping MP3s. We set the quality to 192Kbps and turned off error correction to show the best possible performance attainable with each drive.

Looks like they mainly benchmarked MusicMatch against itself here - no wonder the results were identical.

First time I hear this, and it's a real disappointment.

I always felt the brilliance of the trilogy was in how Tolkien managed to slow down the pace and return the reader into the real world at the end.

Also, I found it fascinating how the 4 hobbits barely draw a sweat liberating the shire, it reminds me of Neo's final fight with Agent Smith at the end of the Matrix I - one gets the impression that Frodo is half asleep during the "scouring of the shire" because its such a trivial event compared to what they just went through.

  9. Re: Agenda reference on Indian Linux PDA For $300 · · Score: 1

The "Agenda" had their act together a whole lot more than this company and the product went nowhere.

Actually, you can still buy Agenda VR3's from http://www.softfield.com, even a model with a battery charger. Prices start at US$ 105 ....

There also is a user community still working on the Agenda - GPL'd software has its advantages here, you can carry on without the original vendor.

  10. Re:Why are people surprised? on Is the Agenda VR3 Linux PDA Dead? · · Score: 3, Interesting

As far as I know, it is the **only** PDA offering a full X Server. While causing somewhat more overhead, it makes porting software much easier - heck, you even can use it as an X Terminal!

While "Linux is cool" shouldn't be the main seller, there are connectivity aspects that simply blast other OS's away. For instance, when I got my Agenda plus Ethernet interface, it was lacking dhcp capabilities. However, I was able to compile and run dhcpcd out of the box - try that with a Palm or Windows CE based device.

Then, the software useability for basic PDA features is actually very decent in the recent releases.

    NOT TRUE.

I'm happily using an Agenda, and syncs with Linux (gnomecard and gnomecal) quite well.

Admittedly, earlier versions of the synchronization programs had problems, though.

I even think the ending was good (except for the look of the aliens) - I guess I want to see it another time to fully understand it, though, as I expects there are some hints up front that fit in with the later parts. Some parts reminded me of Sophie's World; also: if robots can dream, who says that the whole 2nd and 3rd part are not a dream?
