This is technically your fault but the knowledge of how to keep a battery stored really matters and isn't very common knowledge. Any device with a lithium-ion battery of any kind should not be left on the charger for extended periods, like days or more. If you plan on not using the device, unplug and turn it off. The protection chip on the battery will prevent overcharging but it's a precarious situation that might cause overheating, swelling and explosions potentially the longer it's left charging. Citation and more details: https://batteryuniversity.com/...
Apple claims iPads don't overcharge, period. I think the GP is lying.
Uh... that should be standard equipment these days for any electronics store or place people congregate - ALL phones, etc are subject to this. Apple, Samsung, LG, whoever. Damage a lipo and they catch fire...
The reason this made news is because it's so uncommon.
Read the comments, including the comments on the linked article. It's not uncommon. If these were cars blowing up then there would be $billions of product liability suits. When this happened to Samsung they fixed it. But this is Apple.
You claim Apple supporters are Astrotufing; but you DO realize, of course, that about a THIRD of the posts in this "discussion" and from you bashing Apple, right?
And that, DESPITE the fact that TFS specifically mentioned that the battery was PUNCTURED.
Karma. Remember all the Apple fanboys gloating about Note 7 battery issues? Cue payback. I am not a Samsung fanboy by any means, but that performance by Apple folks was just plain galling. Samsung responded to the issue quickly and fairly, let's see what Apple does. (I'm not expecting much.)
Oh, and there were persistent reports of Apple products catching fire, even electrocuting people throughout that same period. Apple just makes me ill.
You're a fucking LIAR.
This was a PUNCTURED battery. It's right there in TFS.
slashdot's resident apple shill jumping to the defense of his beloved brand...honestly you'd have to be a monumental retard to dismiss this by "well it hasn't happened to me". even if it did happen to you you apple (and samsung) fanboys are so unthinkingly loyal you'd rather lose a limb than admit your company of choice had any kind of problem.
Honestly, you'd have to be a monumental retard to miss the fact in TFS that this was from a PUNCTURED battery.
It seems that keeping the iPads/iPhones plugged into an electric outlet all the time, and running all the time, has an unexpected outcome. Moreover we're in summer...
Funny. Apple itself uses dozens, if not hundreds, of iPads as custom machine controllers and data acquisition systems in their R&D and Testing labs. Those are plugged into power 24/7, as are iPads being used in thousands of Kiosks.
Market share is much more important. It is the sole metric that determines the dominance of a platform. The platform with dominance will receive all of the user focus, developer focus and will survive in the long run. iOS devices won't exist in 10 more years whereas Android will thrive.
That's laughable, especially considering that even Google is giving up on Android!
Still very much alive, but in an increasingly saturated market with no original ideas. Their biggest problem is that they tried to appear as the "fashionable" hardware brand. Things eventually go out of fashion. People already have all the tech hardware that they want. That's why companies like MS, Google and Amazon have moved into cloud. Apple is being left behind.
Big difference!
MS, Google and Amazon are almost exclusively software-based companies.
Apple cannot move a Mac, iPad, iPhone, Apple Watch or Apple TV "into the cloud". They are HARDWARE. And the manufacture and sale of that HARDWARE happens to be Apple's main business model.
Tim Cook and pals still think they have a future and they need their investors to believe it and keep investing, but the truth is that they killed the company years ago and it's just taking time for the various bits of the corpse to stop wiggling.
They put very high profit margins over everything and thus moved all production to China for the cheap labor and lack of environmental controls. They pretended they simply could not be profitable employing middle class Americans, even though [a] Apple originally rose to greatness while employing Americans in America and [b] far smaller and less-wealthy companies were doing fine and were profitable making stuff in America with Americans.
In order to manufacture in China, Apple management made the same short-sighted moron moves many other American businesses made: they "partnered" with Chinese "businesses" (arms of the Chinese govt/party/military) and they had to teach the Chinese everything important about the product, its tech, and manufacturing it. After that point, it's only a matter of time before a Chinese entity replaces Apple. It's already impossible to buy a cell phone made in America, where cell phones were invented. No amount of Apple software or services can stop the inevitable end and the only thing uncertain is the date the company is de-listed at the stock exchange. This move is part of the proof that China is already in the driver's seat re Apple.
So, if that is the case, almost every single tech (and most non-tech) American company that sources from China should be following them down the drain...
But it simply doesn't work that way.
Plus, Apple: Proudly going out of business for over forty years!
If they ignored doing business with any country that has human rights violations then I can't think of a single country on earth they could do business in, maybe some of the smaller Scandinavian countries. Certainly US/Russia/UK/AUS/All Asian and middle eastern countries, all communist and dictator driven countries etc would be out and most European countries too. really companies should stay the fuck out of politics, obey the local laws, if you object refuse to do business there, end of story.
Heres some other unrelated things to compare angrily: Tim cook has been known to prefer using an iphone over an android, and yet nobody has seen him wear a hat. Furthermore Google offer almost unlimited storage in their email product, but new programmers have to take a test.
Seriously though, wtf has "Grrrr apple isnt mean to transgender people" got to do with China and apps?
Because Apple.
Seriously, that's all the justification Apple-Hating Slashtards seem to require.
It's not that it hurt their profits, it's that they saw a marketing opportunity to brand themselves as the most Fuck-Da-Police corporation out there (while simultaneously relieving themselves of the minor burden of responding to government unlock requests).
Ginning up paranoia and making a few extra billion by convincing people that they need end-to-end encryption for their fucking text messages to Mom wias simple; stopping the resulting inevitable legal crackdown on encryption by governments all over the world who find themselves unable to perform basic law enforcement tasks anymore won't be.
So your solution would be complete cooperation with LEOs and voluntary backdoors?
Energy Star has been a massive success, at least in appliances. It lets people who care compare relative energy consumption. It's meaningless when it comes to monitors and such, but quite useful for air conditioning or refrigerators.
Bro, stop defending Apple. Jesus Christ man. You must be high.
Did my post even ONCE mention Apple?
My hypothetical applies to ANY product line with significant competition and updatable firmware, and was deliberately written to be agnostic to both product and embedded OS platform (if any).
Let's try a hypothetical: you are CEO for a tech-product company. One that produces a product that, due to market forces, is essentially forced to keep developing new hardware versions with more features and higher performance to stay ahead, or to just to keep up with the competition. These additional features sometimes require updated firmware. In order to avoid accusations of "abandoning" your current customer base, you attempt to Backport at least some of those new features to the prior hardware versions of your product, regardless of the fact that the newer hardware is significantly faster/more capable.
Despite your best efforts, some users report an actual DROP in performance to a lesser or greater extent when they install the new firmware in their old versions of your product, even though the upgrade was completely voluntary.
One or more users now file an "forced obsolescence" complaint in the EU, alleging they were "tricked" or even "forced" into updating the firmware in their copy of your product, even though said user(s) had to read and accept an agreement that included a statement warning about possible performance issues with the new firmware, and now allegedly suffers with decreased performance from said product.
I understand that your mind is only able to think one level deep. One button mouse, same idea, right? No doubt you are in awe of your own intellectual superiority. How Apple of you.
Mmmm. You counter with a one-button-mouse meme.
And yet you have the unmitigated gall to impugn MY "intellectual superiority"?

Proceed as soon as possible in an Apple Store...
And return your product. Then buy from a company that takes safety more seriously.
You need to be sued for slander. Maybe that would shut your idiotic ass up.
Uh... that should be standard equipment these days for any electronics store or place people congregate - ALL phones, etc are subject to this. Apple, Samsung, LG, whoever. Damage a lipo and they catch fire...
FINALLY, a voice of reason!!!
The reason this made news is because it's so uncommon.

You need help. Or maybe just to GTFO.
There ya go, that's the Apple spirit we have come to know, now go straight up to Tim Cook's office so he can stick a gold star on your forehead.
You realize that you are doing nothing but proving yourself an utter moron.
From TFS:
"The iPad and it's punctured battery..."
Remember Apple fanboys laughing at the Samsung exploding battery fiasco. Poor Apple Fanboys.
Go jam a screwdriver into ANY LiOn/LiPo battery and see what happens...

Haters make me sick.
It seems that keeping the iPads/iPhones plugged into an electric outlet all the time, and running all the time, has an unexpected outcome.
That may be the case, if so someone at Apple should be fired for their shithouse battery management electronics.
Moreover we're in summer...
Summer ended 2 weeks ago. The Netherlands has gone back to it's usual chilly windy gloom.
IPads do NOT overcharge when plugged in continuously.

The battery was PUNCTURED during replacement. It's right there in TFS, idiot.

But you apparently did.
Funny how you pull numbers out your ass just to defend Apple.
Funny how you can't be bothered to do 5 seconds of Googling:

Oh, you mean, like all my Android devices and all my laptops. No fires so far, what's up with Apple?
IPads do NOT overcharge when plugged in indefinitely:

So, STUFF IT, Hater.

Lies, as usual.
Apple has no proscription against having their devices plugged into their chargers permanently.

I'm surprised all of their stores are not in flames.
Hey, moron, read TFS!
It said the battery had been PUNCTURED. It didn't just "go off" like a Galaxy Note 7 battery.
Try jamming a screwdriver into ANY LiOn battery and see what happens.
Hint: Stand back...
Still very much alive, but in an increasingly saturated market with no original ideas. Their biggest problem is that they tried to appear as the "fashionable" hardware brand. Five to Zero. I win.
