I wouldn't say the web has totally killed the CD-Encyclopedia. The web does have a lot of information, but for ease of use and quickness, I'll take the CD. It's a pain to download movies of the net when you can just get them from a CD. Not to mention it's harder to find some GOOD information on your subject. If you do a search, half are dead links and the other half are crap sites that don't have anything to do with the subject. I always go to the CD first, and if that doesn't give me enough info, then I hit the web.

I applauded Caldera for doing this. I've never tried Linux, though I want to. My dad is really resisting though, so maybe I will, and maybe I won't. But from everything I've ever read on Linux, everyone has said it was harder to install and do stuff with Linux. Windows in incredibly easy. That's why it's #1. And until Linux gets as easy to use as Windows 2000, it will never overtake Microsoft. There are way too many stupid people in the world. I see this as a good thing. I viewed the screen shots, and said, "Hey, I think I could do this, it looks simple enough". Now if I saw a bunch of crazy Unix commands, then I would have given up all hope of ever using Linux. Linux needs a graphical interface if it wants to compete with Windows, it's as simple as that.

You've said it right there. That's why Windows will remain strong until Linux becomes easier to use. Like the guy above me said with the modem problems, Linux makes you go through all these weird and confusing steps. I'm not a tech guy, or anything close to a tech guy. Windows is made for the average user, and that's all the average user needs. Tell me, what good would Linux do to the average Joe? Especially the average Joe who calls tech support like the guys over at Tech Tales? I especially like your answer to the guys problem "write your own drivers". I'd LOVE to see Joe Average do that.

EVERYTHING MS makes absolutly sucks. MS has NEVER made a good product." And if Linux ever gets bad score, like this case, then it's always "ZDNet fixed it so Linux would lose", or, "They should have tested it on a 386 with 2 megs of RAM, yea, then Linux would win" They forget that NO server even uses anything close to that bad. And we only have 5 screens showing it, so it's been REALLY easy to get a ticket. And then when I went again on Friday night, the theater was only about 3/4 full. I just figure with the biggest theater's showing it in their biggest rooms, and with their 5 screens, the demand just isn't reaching the supply.

Sure, it has a monopoly on the computer market, but I like most of it's products, and it seems like most of the computer mags do to, otherwise they wouldn't rank them as high as they do. But the school is considering dropping it since there is only 10 people in there this year. It doesn't help any that teachers get paid really badily, so schools aren't able to get good computer teachers. Why teach for peanuts when you can go into the commercial industry and get paid a lot more. One of my friends was saying that last year they had a great CS teacher, but she wanted to make more money, so she went into the computer industry. So now he complains about how much this new CS teacher sucks and that he knows more than she does most of the time. It's pretty pathetic really.

I'm a 15 year old Sophmore at a school that is considered "rich" in Amarillo, TX. Your tax dollars and the computers that it buys are being wasted. We have about one Macintosh computer per classroom, and the teachers are the ONLY one's who ever use them. The only times I have ever used a computer at school is in the library, and for Keyboarding IA. I'll be taking Computer Science next year, on 486 Wintel machines. The one's for keyboarding class are I think 386's, possibly 286's running Windows 3.1. All the burcratic crap about a computer in every classroom is a lot of bull. Almost all of the teachers just use them to compile our grades, that's it. And most of them have no clue how to use them. A few do need/know how to use computers, but it's a small minority. We have, I think, 4 computer labs, two of them are for just any classroom that wants them, the other two are for computer specific courses. Everyone of those computers suck, and run outdated software. For example, we have semester tests coming up, so my Spanish teacher decided to go to the computer lab to run some Spanish programs so it would help us study. Needless to say, the programs are incredibly uninteresting, and do not help in the least bit. I would learn much more if the teacher just reviewed us. As for internet connections, I've only been on once during school. Our whole class went to the library (the only place where you can get on the net) to look up housing prices in Houston for a project. I guess it was useful, but geez, I'm a sophmore and only used the internet once at school? I thought that I would get on a lot more than that listening to Congress. The computer situations in schools suck right now. They rather give their extra money to the athelets than the computer nerds.
