Yo. Straighten up. I would laugh if I didn't have to put up with this in the real world-thinly veiled jokes expressing attitudes toward women. Out in cyberspace, I can't tell what you really mean, even with a:). So save yourself some real world grief and pick up some tactfulness now in a relatively anonymous place like Slashdot.
So how do you explain the female version of logical thought process? (:
This joke seems to assume that since human females in general have slightly smaller brains than males, then females are thus less intelligent than males. How unfortunate to have such a thought, because in this society women will have more control over what happens to their pregnancy then they do. It is not a good idea to imply that they cannot make logical decisions that will benefit their welfare.
Perhaps the women you have met in your life seem to be less logical than the men. That is indeed unfortunate-it may have subconsciously painted a negative picture of female intelligence in your mind. By the way, it is also illogical to assume that just because a small group of individuals have certain characteristics, then that entire group has those characteristics.
The relevance, again, is that this will primarily affect womens' decisions about their pregnancies. So think again before joking that women are less logical than men-their decisions are society's future.
Dude, never believe what you hear from spammers. (They lie, you know.)
Spammers didn't tell me anything. I explained in a post to someone else how I got to my conclusions. Plus, I've discussed this in my friends to determine why they got the spam they get. It's surprisingly accurate. You can see some examples in my original post.
BTW, even I know how to fake e-mail addresses, etc. in headers. I was taught that in a basic programming class!
Because your email address has not been made widely visible, I would think.
That's somewhat true. If I published them on public message boards with no spam protection, I'd probably get more spam than I do now.
However, I used to get dozens of spams a day at previous hotmail addresses without doing anything. One of them had my name in it (Morgan) and the other had the number 69 in it. The one with 69 in it had 7 or 8 spams within 24 hours of creating it. The one with Morgan in it got spams within a week. But I had other email addresses that hadn't received spam months after I created it.
I tried to make these email addresses hard to get, so I started thinking about their usernames.
That's when I began using some business logic to figure out what made addresses suspectible to spam and why others didn't. The result was my original post.
I've created a few variants of geekchicN addresses, and I've been spam free for a while. But don't listen to me. Try it yourself.
I'm not a spammer, but apparently they do target their people. Otherwise, why have I been spam-free for months on my free email accounts?

The PCs should ship in the first half of the year and are likely to be priced starting at about $1,800, according to an MTV spokesperson.
If the CNN article is accurate, this is going to flop just because of the price. Most college students don't have $1800 to drop on a computer, and I doubt their parents are going to chip in for such a ripoff.
College students download songs because they don't want to buy an entire $16 CD for 1 or 2 decent songs on the album. So I don't expect them to pay extra for programs that already come with the average computer.
One of the first things students learn when they get into college is the value of the word free (as in beer), no matter how much their parents make.
This is an easy social solution for end users. In my experience, spammers screen out possible users by username. So the key is to choose a name most spammers won't screen.

Here are some bad usernames, and the reasons why.
Username: morgan@mail.com
Spammer's reaction: Morgan's a guy's name! I'll send him pr0n! (Never mind that I'm a heterosexual female.:-) )
Username: blahblah1969@mail.com
Spammer's reaction: 69! I'll send this guy pr0n!
Username: nerd@mail.com

If you're an end user, avoid the following:
*Obvious gender references
*Numbers that could be construed as sexual references, or birthday years
*Names that may be perceived as a potential marketing group (princess, superstrongWWF)
*Names that may indicate you are a certain nationality or ethnic group
This doesn't prevent you getting spam completely. At least you'll start off spam free with the right username, like I have.
Even the $500-$600 price range is still a bit too high. I should know, I am one of the 'disadvantaged people'.
I had a feeling that I would get complaints about the price I gave. Ideally, I would give it $300-400 to make it affordable for most people, but the relatively new hardware makes that unrealistic. From the Newsforge article, the computer has:
That's nice. I just don't see charging below $500 for that sort of hardware.
I don't really see anyone paying even $500 on something that can only do internet browsing when for roughly the same price they can get a cheep pc that will do most anything Joe User needs to do.
This brings up a good point: The name "Internet Computer" is misleading. If it is advertised as a computer that can only web surf, it will go the same way as Audrey. But if you read Roblimo's article again, you'll see it does more than just surf. It also has these capabilities:
*writes and prints letters and homework assignments
*plays downloaded MP3s or music CDs
*plays games
*has a built-in calendar
*watch TV
This will do everything Joe User wants with some nice equipment. It's relatively expensive right now, but lowering the price, in addition to some rebates, would bring it to people who otherwise could never afford something so cool.
The market is there for these applicances, the right one just hasnt hit in my opinion...
Hypothetically, maybe the price could drop to say, $500-$600, and then more of the have-nots in this society would be interested in getting a computer. The disadvantaged people I've met would like a computer, but $800-$1200 is way out of their price range. Then just pre-install a copy of OpenOffice and you've got a winner.
This comment isn't arrogant: it never says that non-nerds don't like LOTR or that they don't have a right to enjoy it as much as nerds do. What it does say is that LOTR fever is contagious among nerd and non-nerd communities alike.
Thanks, friend. You stated it better than I did originally when I sent in the article.
if my dad went to Yale and gave them lots of $$$, I'd be able to get myself in too.
You may get yourself in because of your dad, but could you stay there? Networking people opens doors everywhere, but in America, only your merit will let you in the room.
Sometimes I wish people would take basic courses in economics and political science before they start arguing on subjects they know nothing about. Wait a second, this is Slashdot. *rim shot*
On to the comment:
Instead you'd rather make it harder for the rest of the world to do business with the US by assessing various tariffs and fees. So some day the other 90% of the world will wake and realize they don't need the US anymore.
*sigh* One of the reasons so many people do business in the US is because it has the least tariffs, taxes, levies, and restrictions in the world (generally speaking of course.)
Europes got its socialistic tax practices, China refuses to encourage Western ideas and monitors the Internet, and even Japan has restrictive practices that drive its prices up too high. Recently, Tokyo and Nagasaki were ranked the most expensive cities in the world to live in-again.
What such countries need to realize is that freedom is not only beneficial ideologically, but financially as well. Only then will they not be so dependent on the US' financial successes.
This is an idea of what you'll have to take to get a CS degree. Note that 32 hours of mathematics and science is required. My boyfriend CLEPed, takes summer school at a community college, and takes 15-18 hours of classes per semester, and he's only hoping to graduate in 4 years.
It's been said, but a faster way of gaining points is getting certified in something instead. Google has subcategory dedicated to tons of certification information.
I wish you good luck in whatever you choose to do.

If we really wanted to solve these problems we probably need to make a new OS...
Yep.
Slashdotters may want to hurt Microsoft by breaking it up, but we've seen that the legal process is slow and generally ineffective.
Nailing them with the FBI, IT professionals, and security experts may actually do real damage to sales.
The greatest part is, I bet most of the people challenging Microsoft are Slashdotters. Their arguments sound like +5 moderated posts, IMHO.
