Star Trek TNG DVDs
pgudge writes "startrek.com had a post about the paramount release of Star Trek The Next Generation on DVD. Claimed a around $100 for the season pack, including 7 DVD's. And that other season are to be released every other month thereafter. all done in Dolby Digital 5.1. Release date expected 26th march"
Good way to watch them without suffering through TNN's ridiculous image
squashing technology (Proudly proving that in the future everyone is
either a pro wrestler, or shaped like a pear!)
I've been waiting for this, better dump the few ST:TNG Laserdiscs I have on eBay right away.
Oh, and I submitted this several days ago:
* 2002-01-11 11:58:47 ST:TNG DVD Sets Officially Announced (articles,tv) (rejected)

Now if only Babylon 5 could get the same treatment. Buffy is on the way. And Simpsons 1st season is out.
Anyone have any more info?
Do we hate the MPAA this week or not???
Great!
This means I'll be able to download the shows real soon now on Morpheus, Gnutella or EDonky2000!

I kinda like watching TNG on TNN, it's weird, I know, but it adds to the atmosphere. So much of Star Trek is like a big party, a community, I don't always feel right watching it myself in the comfort of my own home, I like the feeling that millions of losers are watching it with me. Anybody else catch techTV's little stints at the Star Trek Experience lately? Excellent, nothing like an interview with a real Klingon to remind you that the culture is out there, not on your DVD shelf.

Yeah, right! All this really means is that there will now be DIVX copies of Next Gen online.
File Rogue is getting pretty damn good!
All seven discs are encoded with the Macrovision(TM) AntiCopy process. The above information pertains to the North American release only.
:o)
When are we getting them in region 2? Will ours be macrovision free? As we know only you US guys copy them to VHS for leet pirate salez
This post is not serious
then the way they packaged the original series, by putting 2 episodes per DVD and charging $20-$30 per 2 episodes.
:)
I'll be collecting these, and hoping the original series, as well as Voyager is released in this fashion.
I can't imagine DS:9 would sell quite as well...
It's about time bloody time Paramoun! Who would pay $20 for 2 episodes on a VHS/DVD ?? X-Files on DVD did it right from the beginning. Each season for ~ $120.
;-)
Now we just need Babylon 5, Futurama, Deep Space 9, and Red Drawf on DVD and I'd be a happy sci-fi geek! Oh yeah, and the complete Lord of the Rings.
And waiting for. In long lines... with suitable body armor and urban warfare armaments to fight off the hordes at Wherehouse on the day they ship.
I am married to a trekky in denial. It's okay, but you have to be careful to hide any videotapes you value. I bought a copy of Two Moon Junction once, but it was used to record over a trek episode before I got a chance to watch the movie.
Thank you! Now I can DIGITALLY peruse my collection for those delightful Wesley Crusher moments!
Yeah, their picture shrinking technology really sucks, they don't even maintain the aspect ratio, they just smoosh their message in at the bottom, and they do it on almost all of their shows. It really blows.
Having screwed up quite a bit in the past, it's good to see Paramount getting their act together with this boxed set. I guess they're just trying to make up for Enterprise.

Although I enjoy watching Star Trek TNG (and none of the other series for some reason), I won't be rushing out to buy this set. I just watched one of the first series episodes on TNN last week, and it was awful -- just like I remember.
If you want to see bad dialog, melodramatic music, poor lighting, etc. then buy this set. Honestly, I feel a little embarassed for the cast and producers when these first episodes are shown on tv...
Whenever I watch one of these first episodes, I feel like they were trying so hard, yet it just didn't come out right. There were cheesy props, outlandish plot lines, and the thoughtful issues that made later episodes a success weren't yet developed. I enjoy it more when the stories and cast were subtle and nuanced. These episodes stand out like an ugly sore in TNG's generally good later work.
I'll wait till the uniforms change -- that's one of the turning points!
Well, the first season will be released in March and additional season will be released every other month.
That means that there won't be anything worth buying until September or so...
Has anyone else really thought about these DVD tv episode deals?
Seems to be a little too much. And when do we get Seinfeld, News Radio, or Night Court?
Get your Unix fortune now!
I was really excited initially when I saw they started releasing complete seasons of shows on DVD. Since getting a couple, truth be told, I hardly watch them at all... There's some things that I'm willing to invest the energy to put on and watch, and other things that I'm only willing to pick up when channel surfing.
The only thing I've found them really valuable for is when someone hasn't seen a series, and I want to show them a few episodes (e.g. The Sopranos). I was delighted to get the first season of "The Simpsons" and tore through the special features, but haven't watched a single episode from it. Something like TNG everyone's seen and I really can't see myself getting a craving to see "Data's Day" and throwing it on...
Am I a freak or do other people buy these things and not watch them?
A new season will be released every other month
March 2002: Season 1
May 2002: Season 2
July 2002: Season 3
Septemeber 2002: Season 4
November 2002: Season 5
January 2003: Season 6
March 2003: Season 7
I can only afford 1 season. Which one should I get for my Dad? He likes them all.
But somehow, watching them years later, especially after going through the entire run of B5 and being a bit older, I find that many of the episodes really, really suck badly.
They simply don't hold up well at all.
And while the first season of most shows usually pretty weak, I find it took a long time for TNG to really get anywhere. The early episodes of the first season are especially painful and I find them completely unwatchable.
I'll just pass on the DVDs and remember TNG for how I saw it then and avoid any reruns. Let the pleasent memories remain.
You know, that sounds like the original series... and I liked it, too.

Now if only we could keep up for movie releases.
-- Sorry, I can't think of anything funny to say here.
Can you explain this "image squashing technology" for us non-Americans? Do they change the aspect ratio?
TNN (The National Network, formerly The Nashville Network before Viacom bought it, moved all its programming to CMT, and turned TNN into a TBS/USA clone) vertically scales the image on many of its shows into the top 6/7 or so of US TV's 240 visible scanlines. In the bottom 1/7, TNN displays its logo and unobtrusive textual advertisements. Good points: It lets TNN go longer without a commercial interruption, it moves the captions out of the way of the picture, and it's easily switched off for broadcasting letterboxed feature films. Bad point: It modifies the image.
Will I retire or break 10K?
What season was that episode from? --- Heh.. worth buying that season just for that episode. ;)
I am Jack's HTTP Server
And, I might add, the Oxygen network's?
For some odd reason, it is now "cool" to put a useless black band at the bottom of the screen at all times. And we're not talking letterboxing here, but just a useless black band that tells you the name of the show you are watching!
I refuse to watch TNN or any other network that butchers the picture with such filth. It is utterly useless and wastes valuble screen realestate.
Oh, someone might think "Hey, we need to remind people what channel they are watching".
OK, that makes sense, but there are other ways to do that!
This only reminds me what channel I should avoid at all costs from now on.
from Will Wheaton?
How does he feel about bringing back those childhood nightmares of being Mr Crusher?
I know Star Trek is a huge enterprise (pun intended) now, but there are still a lot of people out there who worked really hard on the project, and deserve to get a bit of reward for their work.
My general rule of thumb for file copying is this: do I take income away from the owners of the copyright? For instance, when you watch TV and videotape an episode, the television company has already paid for the rights for the episode to be shown. So you're not taking anything away from the company. However, if they make a special high-quality DVD edition, and you just copy it, they are losing the money they would have gotten if you rented or *gasp* even bought it.
$100 for a season isn't that unreasonable. It works out to something like $3.50-$4.50 per episode, which is not that hard for you all to do. If you really want them, save your money and buy it! It works out to less than $2/day if each season comes out every two months. Not that hard to do, folks. I know some people who put more than that in the vending machines at work!
Besides which, once you figure in the price of your internet connection, and purchasing CDs to burn the data on, you really aren't saving that much money, but you're getting an inferior quality ripped file!
As for me, I think I'll start saving my money now. That extra footage bit sounds cool!
Slashdot (to MPAA): You fucking fascists. We hate you.
MPAA: But look at these shiny colors!
Slashdot: Oooh! How much?
DVDs of the 2nd season of Sex In The City (from HBO), 18 episodes, is $37.48 at Amazon.com (and fits on 3 DVDs). Sorry, but 26 episodes should under no circumstances cost this much. I would love to own some of the later seasons, but $100 is ridiculous. Making the licensee even more greedy is the fact that HBO is selling at that price without any additional income coming in on the show's balance sheets from syndication rights. Paramount, on the other hand... Sigh.
It would probably be cheaper to put together a cheap computer and a month of broadband internet to download them all in divx...
Tim
Omnia vestra castrorum habetur nobis.
Why can't they manage to get the shows in order on the DVD's?
Disc 1: Encounter at Farpoint Parts 1 & 2 (episodes 101, 102), The Naked Now (103), Code of Honor (104)
Disc 2: The Last Outpost (107), Where No One Has Gone Before (106), Lonely Among Us (108), Justice (109)
Disc 3: The Battle (110), Hide and Q (111), Haven (105), The Big Goodbye (113)
Disc 4: DataLore (114), Angel One (115), 11001001 (116), Too Short a Season (112)
Disc 5: When the Bough Breaks (118), Home Soil (117), Coming of Age (119), Heart of Glory (120)
Disc 6: The Arsenal of Freedom (121), Symbiosis (123), Skin of Evil (122), We'll Always Have Paris (124)
Disc 7: Conspiracy (125), The Neutral Zone (126), Special Features
This is a great concept, if for nothing else but the marketing involved. At the end of every season after the second one, there was a season finale cliffhanger. You will get to the last DVD in the series and go, "well dang, I gotta have the next season!" Then you run out and pop down another C-note!

Isn't Babylon 5 coming out? I remember reading a few weeks back that the first set would include all of the first season plus the "In The Beginning" TV-movie...was I high?
that every episode will be divxified and all over gnutella (and the like) within days after each season's release, right?
Hey, I am all for supporting stuff I like, but close to $1K (how many seasons were there, anyway?) is a bit much to rewatch TNG again... Now, DS9 I'll pay for, if/when they put that out on DVD.
Incidentally, this would be perfect for digital distribution though - I doubt many people will buy even several seasons at this price, and $100 is probably as low as they can get, all things considered (most shows are about $160-$180/season if I recall correctly; but that's all from VHS days - 7 DVDs gotta be less expensive than 12 tapes), but I am sure a lot more people would pay, let's say, $30ish per season to download (that's download, not stream) high quality mpegs (let's say VCD compliant, to make that road to the DVD player from the PC that much easier) of one season, from a reasonably fast server. Hell, I would, and I am willing to wager that in fact they'd end up making a lot more money off of it that way.
If only there was a way to sort out this digital distribution/rights management debacle without making it feel like the consumer is taking it up the ass.
sic transit gloria mundi
finally, high quality divx rips here we come...
You know, when I have the time and resources (yeah, right) I think bringing the feel of channel surfing to a video collection would be a great idea! You just dump all your DVDs to hard disc, and have a button on the remote that just randomly pulls up the middle of one of the files you have on the drive. If you see something "on" that you like, you just hit a button to go back to the beginning of the file.

I am dissapointed to find out that these DVDs are in full frame only. While today full frame is more popular, what about in a couple years? If a program was shot in widescreen, it needs to be presented in widescreen, at least as an option on DVDs. Also, I don't like the face that the episodes are out of order and the fact that the box height doesn't match that of a normal DVD case. Other than than, they look great, but at $100/season, I for sure expect widescreen and standardized cases/episode ordering.

my god, somebody else has seen Two Moon Junction. I cannot believe that you would actually have paid money from it. It is quite possibly the most staggeringly aweful film ever made.

I don't see them on the feature list, dang... that would have made this one really worth having. Perhaps we might get lucky and see some on the upcoming sets.
I'm not sure if this is true or not, but I kinda remember reading that there are a host of licensing issues surrounding outtakes and bloopers hence the lack of any released tapes. I have a short mpeg of a few from Voyager, DS9, and TNG and they are great! You can find them on Kazaa (gotta love spyware...) since I doubt my host would be too impressed if I were to host them off my site.

I wonder if they'll return my calls on this one?

TNN is ridiculous. I agree with the observation that their image-squashing technology makes watching TNG so annoying. I went to their website (http://www.tnnonline.com/) today and on top of having a horrible site design, they have spelled Picard's name, in bold letters on the front page, as "PICCARD".
Pardon my griping...

Gee, the boxed sets are nice (if I wanted the "entire series"), but what if I want a few choice epicodes? I trust there is a single disk option, like TOS DVDs.

Do you actually know any scientist? Hrm? I see you're from Memphis, TN. That's a fine city in a fine state. Perhaps you've confused a brewer with a scientist? Perhaps wrestling shows would be more to your liking? Sadly enough, noone's going to be making a show about fucking your cousin. However, I am sure that you see enough of that without turning on the "Boobtube". Seriously, you all have Britney Spears and Michael Jackson songs/videos on your computers you would NEVER actually buy, right? Besides, I still believe the biggest reason to buy in stores is better quality. Sure, some things are close, but only true fans would buy the dvds to begin with.
In the future piracy of movies will probably be a big deal, but I have trouble feeling sorry for studios willing to shell out $20 million to Julia Roberts so we can go watch a steaming pile of dogshit (like that classic My Best Friend's Wedding).

Season 5 *was* definitely one of the best seasons, (though I think you missed Darmok on that list :) )...
.. But my all-time favorite episode had to have been "Frame of Mind." (When Riker is convinced he's going insane.) I loved the surreal ones - and that one definitely takes the cake for that label!

"...and Maddest of all, to see Life as it Is, and not as it Should Be."
Man, I've been waiting a loooong time for this to happen. Thought it never would. What I'll really be eager to get is the first Borg episode, though! Anyone remember what season that was?
Also, I would love to get the Voyager (?) one with the Borg homebase. That was like a full movie for cryin' out loud! Damn cool.
Wonder if there are plans to release Seinfeld season episodes on DVD? That would also be great. (though admittedly anti-climactic after this event, hehe)
On another note - I guess these DVDs are commercial-free, too! What a bonus.
Notice also that this issue dovetails nicely with the "overfull pipe" syndrome, that "/" posted a day or two ago. I bet if people actually started paying for the bandwith consumed. File sharing and subsequently the piracy issue would diminish greatly. Same with USENET.
I totally agree about 'The Inner Light'. For me it was the most poignant episode. The idea of a doomed society sending out a Voyager type probe with the life experience of one of its members somehow deeply moved me. I still remember it quite well, although it's been years.
Yeah, that should be per second squared.

What can I say, I'm infatuated.
Yay - now I can free up gigs and gigs of hard drive space! Though I've grabbed a lot of episodes from Morpheus, I don't mind paying the $4 an episode for the whole collection. It's about time they've been released.
Like a few other posters have mentioned, I don't see plucking TV episodes from P2P networks to be much different from having a friend record them for me. The Tick (animated) and a few other shows just aren't otherwise available in my area. I suppose that's the same logic that Replay is using with their episode sharing technology. It'll be interesting to see how this works out in court.
Probably because REAL(TM) Trekkies know that B5 is complete and total shit and it shouldn't even be mentioned in a Trek story.
With 22 seasons, this will be, like someone said, around $4.50 an episode. But still... Simpsons DVD 1 was 13 episodes for $30 ($20 many places on the internet). My question is... why charge $100 when DVD media costs them what... pennies? They'd still get every TNG geek to lay down $350 for the series if they charged "only" $50. Just seems unfair to me...
I still do not understand what the fascination is with this gay bullshit. I would rather take 19 violent shits in a row than have to see any TNG episodes. For some reason these episodes are the bane of all late night programming. I think Trek has whored itself out to every low-end network in existence to serve as filler so they can have something to show that constitutes as "name" programming. These people should just show infomercials . . . networks get paid for it, and it is 100 times more entertaining than watching Worf have anal sex with Captian Picard. I would rather watch an informertial with that hot blond chick from Whos the Boss talking about disfiguring acne than DS9, wouldn't you? Star Trek has become a sick joke, a parody of itself. It should be put out of its misery. William Shatnet can kiss my anus. goatse.cx rules!
I'll definately be purchasing some (if not all) of the season collections. I'm also looking forward to the DS9 and Voyager collections if/when they ever come out...
About the only Widescreen TV show I can think of is B5. Are there many others?
Yes there are, though B5 was basically the first one, the other pioneer being Lois & Clark. Some other shows that I know of include ER (from season 6, I think), NYPD Blue (from season 8), Sopranos, Buffy (from season 4), Angel... Neither TNG, DS9 nor Voyager were widescreen, Enterprise is the first one in Star Trek franchise. Come to think of it, most of recent television shows with budget have been moving to widescreen, though television broadcast versions may still be pan&scan. Widescreen is the future way, and now there no point making shows that will have black bars on left and right in 5-10 years.
Actually, most of European TV productions, even low-budget ones, have been widescreen for years already.
And back to B5... It's a rather complicated example when it comes to widescreen. While live action was filmed widescreen with Super35 process, almost all CGI and composite shots were done in 4:3 (except for the last few episodes). Therefore all the CGI and composite shots must be cropped from top and/or bottom for widescreen version. Also there will be definite resolution loss when making anamorphic widescreen masters, because the original rendering was made for NTSC resolution. There is a long analysis of all the problems involved here.
As someone else mentioned, the first season of Buffy is also coming out on DVD. Also, a 20th anniversary edition of Tron is coming out, apparently with lots of extras. Dunno how that'll look after all these years; it's been quite a while since I saw it.
:-)
But I'm really waiting for the second season of Stargate on DVD. I got the first season, and it was very good, much better than the rough first season many shows have before they hit their stride. If you watched Stargate the movie and thought it was boring (I did), I recommend giving the series a chance. It's one of my favorite series now. You may find it a little jarring at first seeing Richard Dean Anderson ("McGuyver") running around with big guns though.
Just like some of you like to view/fondle enormous breasts, some of us prefer smaller breasts.
Well, for regular (non-premium) TV, once you have bought the TV series on VHS or DVD, you will never watch it again in reruns/syndication, and that's one less eyeball watching the commercials, so the studios figure that they can at least partially make up for it by charging you an arm and a leg to watch the show commercial free whenever and wherever.
:-)
As for premium channels like HBO, well, A) HBO has been good about enhancing the DVDs (commentaries, anamorphic widescreen, Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound) and has to recoup the additional production costs, and B) why buck the trend?
I HOPE when they do this movie that they AVOID what was done with Pearl Harbor-- splitting the movie across two discs. That was inexcusable in my mind, and could have been avoided (there's what, three audio tracks for Pearl Harbor? DROP one or two of them, and include only the Dolby Digital 5.1 and the Dolby Stereo 2.0 (release a seperate DTS DVD, if need be)). Blech, icky.
All I know about Bush is I had a good job when Clinton was president.
Man, you folks have a lot of money spending on old TV shows. In a year, you can get that 7 DVD for half the price - or in 10 years, those will be in a late night ads - all available for $39.95.
I like to watch all my sci-fi on THE FUCKING NASHVILLE NETWORK!!! What's their other show? Wrestling? Christ, last time I checked, Next gen., ds-9, and voyager were all in syndication on my local fox and UHF stations. I say as long as you pay for cable, there should be absolutely NO ADVERTISING! That's why it's on the free stuff. But shelling out 30-50 bucks a month for 3-5 channels actually worth watching, that all have about three shows per channell that they repeat over and over and over? Next time you see a commercial on TNN, make sure to remind yourself that you're paying for the privilege of being marketed to.
Shift happens. Fire it up.
testing.
this is off topic, but I had for years a tape of the original broadcast of Encounter at Farpoint.
Yeah I know it sucked, however it was a nice addition for my sci-fi collection. The VHS was made in EP mode and it was the complete 2-hour movie with original commercials. The picture quality degraded of course being made in 1987, but wasn't watched often and I stretched the tape once in a while. It held up fairly well for a long time.
I being the dumb fuckhead that I am, lent this prized novelty to my friend. I 'm sure you know how this is going to end. Just let me tell you what I got back. His little sister used my tape for....

Coolness! I've been waiting for this for a long time, and it even looks like they're doing it right by not putting a mere 2 episodes on a disk. (It's still a bit pricy, but not as extortionary as it could have been.)

I thought avacado! Am I alone in this, or is "pear" the consensus?
Seriously though, why does TNN do the banner-squishing thing? Why can't they just display their logo in the lower right corner, like everybody else?
More to the point, why do I get the disturbing feeling they're tarketing their trek airings at the - erm - less educated market? I watch star trek: tng, and I see ads for Baywatch, monster trucks, and conspiracy "news" shows. Is the Star Trek demographic changing, or is TNN just on crack? Or are both true?

Just as I'll feel sorry when US legislation mandates ISP implement a surcharge per megabyte of download, with a percentage of that charge going back to the big studios. You'll get all the episodes you want, and you'll pay for them. Win/win all around.
Ha, ha. Just kidding. Really.

See, that's why I've adopted the solution I have: Bitch about the MPAA constantly, then buy the DVDs, turn off my brain, and complain on slashdot about how crappy the DVDs are, how eveil copy protection is, and how much I hate the MPAA. It's the best of both worlds! (And not in the bad assimilation way.)

If your allowance isn't sufficient to cover it. I mean, many of Slashdot's readership, like Syre (who figured out how to link to multiple piracy options, go you!) may have just moved on to living in their parent's basement. You can't expect them to spend money on goods and services.
They are entitled to it, remember?
I didn't check on this theory, so I could be wrong, but they might be ordered by airdate instead of production date for the DVD release. I seem to remember the first season of TNG in particular having some airdate/production date weirdness...resulting in the spontaneous reincarnation of Tasha Yar if you watch the episodes in production order. :)
it's truely amazing - paramount is actually learning from their mistakes! the st:tos dvd's had 2 eps per dvd, and no special features, but now... paramount prooves that they listen to their customers, and do something like this! What a great company. And I remember when Warner Brothers was being hailed as more ahead of it's time than Paramound was - predictions that we'd get DVD's of B5 sooner than we'd get them for star trek... heh. in heindsight, that's sorta funny!
I'd rather see a DS9 release. Baby steps, I guess.
Aside from Q, the first season was a waste, as was Dr. Pulaski. The story didn't pick up until the return of Hot Red, the enbearding of Riker, and when it became the Data-n-Picard show.

I'm a big fan of wide screen, which is why I was so disappointed with the DVD for Shawshank Redemption (one of my favorite movies), which was advertised as wide screen. When I did a side by side comparison with it and my full frame version on VHS, I found that the "widescreen" version was just the full frame version with top and bottom cropped. Very disappointing.
I hate to be topical, here, but we are not Borg. The "Slashdot Community" is no more a single hive-mind with but a single thought than any other broad-based subculture (I remember someone explaining to me that this is why the gay community has such a hard time getting anything done).
When you see one article with folks flaming the MPAA and saying that they (MPAA) needs to be stopped, and another which raves about some new DVD, why would you assume that the same people are interested? Slashdot is correctly reporting on "News for Nerds", it's not censoring "cool MPAA stuff" because it would hurt some particular cause any more than its censoring anti-MPAA stuff; nor should they!
Now, I very much see the value in pointing out to the "ooh, shiny thing" audience that these brand new nifty DVDs are brought to you by the folks who want to stamp out fair use as if it were a plague, but let's not expect that EVERYONE will listen. Many folks who are geeky enough to care about what Slashdot says have no interest in fair use and what it means to them. I consider this their loss, but it's a valid point of view.
I can't wait to get them. off topic a little, I've got an old comic book with record of ST. It's called 'ST: A Passage to Mauve' or something similar to that. The comic is in pretty good shape but I can't seem to find any information about it. Anyone know where I might find out about how much it's worth? It was printed circa 1972. I even tried contacting Paramount -- nothing.
This is the television industry, not the MPAA.
Chao
I bought X-files 2nd season a while ago but was thoroughly disappointed in it. The package was nice and audio and visual quality was good, but the "usability" of the disc set was abyssmal.
First of all, when you start watching an episode you're forced to watch the equivalents of the "FBI warning" in at least four languages. After the episode ends, you get to see another four warnings before you get back to the main menu.
The main menu is my second gripe. I like to watch TV DVDs like I listen to music. I play them in the background, mostly listening and occasionally watching. What I don't want to do is to click through menus every time an episode ends. I want the all episodes to play consequently without any interaction from me. Unfortunately the X-files collection doesn't let you do that. After watching the episode (and the damn warnings) you have to travel all the way back to the main menu and click on the next episode (and watch the warnings again).
And why aren't the US getting the same trippy cases the UK are getting?
As in here: amazon.co.uk
I can't seem to find any in the US that look like this - the US one's all look like the XFiles box sets...
Cheers,
Richard
Let me follow that up, with a link to pics of the US verison...

According to a couple fan sites, and to TV Guide, the new Enterrprise episode, "Silent Enemy", airs this Wednesday.
My complaint with TNN is with DirecTV.
Sometimes when I'm watch ST:TNG on TNN over DirecTV the picture is so bad I think I need glasses or I'm seeing ghosting. DirectTV has lowered the MPEG sampling rate on TNN so much it's often unwatchable. There are often blocky digital artifacts.
If a character moves fast you get to see where the character WAS as well as where it IS. I don't think that's caused by Wesley Crusher doing some more warp bubble experiments.
DirecTV has obviously decided that TNN's bandwidth can be better used to add a few more shopping channels.
Hey, DirecTV! Some of us know that "digital" doesn't always mean "better quality." I'd rather have analog ghosting than digital artifacts your negligence is giving us.

Every Star Trek male actor goes through at least 2 stages of physiological development: 1. The muscle-bound "pro-wrestler" look 2. The late-30's "pear-shaped look" Similarly, every female actor has 1. hot model look 2. horse with saddlebags
This has nothing to do with TNN image compression
German, I think,
Seems like the easiest way to get modded up these days is to spout off about the "slashdot hypocrisy," as if the Anti-MPAA and the pro-DVD posts are from the same person. Generalizations like that should be marked (-1, Clueless)

"Every artist is a cannibal, every poet is a thief."
So basically you're telling me that all of ST:TNG will be $700? That's $1050 Canadian, which is a fuck of a lot to pay. ST:TNG is good, but over $1k for the series?
Am I missing something? I mean surely they can put more than 2 episodes on 1 DVD. Double side the damn things and get 8 or 12 on each one.
This is so, so very clearly just Paramount trying to fuck us over, a la George Lucas with the constant re-releasing of Star Wars. Somehow I thought Paramount might be a bit better about it. Obviously I was mistaken. Sigh...

Season 5 *was* definitely one of the best seasons, (though I think you missed Darmok on that list :) )...
I've only got one thing to say about that:
Sokath, his eyes uncovered!
...
Mirab, his sails unfurled!
[A Darmok 'dictionary' can be found here.]
>X-Files on DVD did it right from the >beginning. Each season for ~ $120.
Um, save yourself $20 on the rest of the X-Files sets and buy them at WalMart as they come out. $99.96
(Online shopping does not always result in saving money.)
