    Well, although if I had solar I'd certainly be taking it off the grid if there was an outage, the first time someone came by to skull crack or panel bash, I'd be shooting him in the face with a .50 cal American Eagle. (note this eliminates the face, and the entire skull behind it)

    When those conditions spring up, I have the weapon on my person, not in a gun safe. And I err on the side of my personal and family safety.

    You don't like Murdoch's politics. SO fucking what. I'm not fond of them either, but then I don't agree with the dropout at the gas station, either. Get over it and learn to do what's best for you. Longterm or short, some things you can't change, and inconveniencing youself isn't going to help.

    Indeed. They were shortsighted enough to cling to the "sell film" model for far too long. If they had Digital tech long enough ago to have patents on it, it's their own damned fault they didn't have the intelligance to profit from it. or more to the point they were too fucking greedy. They wanted to milk the public for film/development costs. Now the barn door is open and the cow is gone.

    The local PD doesn't want to deal with it? call the FDLE and get a state auditor crawling up the chief's ass. That doesn't work? call your state Rep/Senator. Keep making noise until they do their fucking job. Getting the TV station on this was a great first start.

    The cops aren't doing their job in that part of Florida, apparently.

    There is no reason why any cartoon needs to be in flash. There are any number of other animated graphic formats out there that do not require a technology that is used to intrude on user's enjoyment of the web.

    HTML is capable of more than that, idiot.

    There is nothing about navigating a website that flash does that HTML cannot. Apart from forcing intersticial ads, and generally wasting processor time on the client.

    The web IS HTML. Macromedia does not, and will not dominate normal websites. Websites that rely entirely on Flash will generally be ignored.

    THe web is meant to be hypertext with some images mixed in. There is no legitimate reason to add crap like full-screen forced ads and web pages that scream at you in surround sound. Unless you're a scumbag marketer that is...

    whether you think it's generally a horrid abomination or not, more and more sites use Flash for essential navigation tools


    And those sites should be ignored by sane people. There is NO legitimate reason to use flash for navigation on the web That is what HTML is for. The only use that requiring flash for navigation has is an attempt to force people to install it so that shoskeles and other garbage can be forced on them.

    If you are a talentless enough web designer to be incapable of providing STANDARD HTML navigation on your site, please be kind enough to remove yourself from the gene pool by drinking some fuckin draino.

    Agreed. The "legitimate" uses for Flash aren't enough to make those of us who know better install that intrusive, security-risk, annoying tech.

    Flash designers: Make your website Flash only? I won't do business with you. HTML is the web. If you can't work within that framework, you're a worthless, talentless, idiotic web designer, and you should have been put out of work when the bubble burst.

    Due to all the evil uses that Flash is put to (annoying ads, shoskeles/full screen annoying ads) A good portion of clueful users do not allow flash on their systems.

    Smart designers use technologies that are not widely abused.

    For what it's worth, back in the late 80's when SCO was still selling "Xenix" the vendor I worked for pronounced it as "Sko Xenix" so there was certainly a precident (it was a piece of shit back then as well)

    *snort* Yea I'm going to leave my windows wide open and invite burgulars. That's a fantastic idea. WRT to the "it can be done" referencing living in the sauna that is Spring to fall in Florida, just because it CAN be done doesn't mean I'm going to do it voluntarily. I like to sweat when I'm excercising, having sex, or OD'ing on Curry/Chili. Not when I'm sitting still or sleeping.

    And the humidity and mold (esp. Aspergillus Niger) in Florida will really do wonders for my allergies, the condition of my hardware/books/etc.

    No thanks. The humid, moldy environment can stay OUTSIDE where it belongs.

    I think turning machines off when you're not using them is a good idea, but I have many reasons (MythTV being one of them) for having more than one machine running at times.

    FWIW, my internet lag is lower with the dedicated PPro 200 running smoothwall than it is with the dedicated consumer box it replaced. Thats a priority for me. Might not be for others, but since gaming is ~80% of my entertaining budget, I take it seriously.

    Also, Im now seeing 19 monitors for around $100 more than 17's. Still only 1280x1024, but I'm tempted to replace my CRT for the reasons you list (and because the 17" LCD I got for my secondary display has a much cleaner color profile than the CRT.

    I happen to know, and I'm not saying how, as it would not be a good thing for my job, that companies that "license" things that go into windows don't get paid for it. They get a mention in the license page in their feature, and a reasonable assurance that M$ won't crush them... for now.

    For once, I couldn't be happier about M$ flexing its muscle. Symantec and it's competitors have needlesly made antivirus software too complex by adding thier subscription nonsense. THere is half again as much code (based on binary size) devoted to enforcing thier subscription licensing as there is for the job you're paying for (which would be the detection and removal of virii)

    I still maintain a XP boot for my games that don't work under winex, so I like this.

    You have a choice, restrict yourself only to hardware that provides open source drivers, use what is made available, or use another OS. Centrino users don't really have the option of demanding open source, if they chose to use the hardware that they want to use. You made the same choice with your video card.

    If Intel's choices boil down to "release a binary driver or ignore Linux", which realistically, they do, I'd prefer that they support Linux in any way that they realistically can.

    Intel is obligated to its shareholders to protect it's technology. Open source drivers could tip their cards to AMD or some newcomer could gain the upper hand. That is the REALITY of how the hardware business works.

    I have had no problem with Nvidia drivers and stability, but I stayed away from the Nforce chipset due to the ongoing support problems it has had.

    I too would prefer open source drivers, but I'm not going to threaten to hold my breath until I turn blue just because all they want to give me is binaries.

    All of those things that you say have always been true "to some extent" throughout the world. The U.S. is not especially different in that respect. Try dressing/talking/acting like a Castilan nationalist in the proper region of Spain and see what kind of civil rights you have.

    The cop handled the situation wrong. He should be shovelling fries now. That doesn't warrant another attempt to villanize the entire US system. The case is going before the Supreme Court. That mechanism is there precisely to prevent the sorts of abuses that some people in this thread think are happening.

    Wait until the court pronounces its judgement before you cry Fascism.
