The court order isn't directed or served to Facebook.
True. They couldn't be charged with failing to comply with a court order. But if they deleted the account knowing that it's contents were subject to a court order they could certainly be charged with destruction of evidence, which is a felony.
As if that data is ever actually deleted. It just becomes a shadow account.
These criminals wouldn't hesitate to hunt down every last one of them for daring so much as to troll on a web board! What makes you think they'd sit by idle while their bank accounts were emptied. They'd probably start going after not just the bloggers but their family and friends to teach others a lesson. Even cops hesitate to fuck with these guys, and they are already well known, so the idea of shaming them is incredibly stupid and unworkable. What else are these hacker groups do exactly? Release a can of open source software on their arse? If you're going to take them on you better have legal backing, a metric arse load of weapons and somewhere safe to hide your family.
Then you end up with an aging population and a whole other kind of unsustainable misery.
And, by the way, what is "unsustainable" about an ageing population?.
This question shows your understanding of the problem just isn't there. Think about a world where there are not enough people to run the place. Everything from health care and education to basic infrastructure. The computer you're writing this one would not have been built, and if by some miracle it were, you wouldn't have electricity to run it. Don't believe me? Go to a seniors retirement home some time and try to work out how long they'd last without staff to help them.
Not likely that anyone can make the US military do anything it doesn't want. Keep in mind who has access to an essentially unlimited number of snipers.
That is fascinating, horrifying, and WTF! all at the same time.
Well I gurantee you anyone who pays $1000 for the pair of units gets F$@#ed...just not as intended. The only horrifying part is that there are people that desperate and stupid. Why on earth would anyone think that a mastabatory aid is best located attached to a mini-tower and located in a drive bay? I can only assume that anyone who thinks this is a good idea is in no danger of polluting the gene pool.
Not that it's a problem in this case, since this system is doomed to fail before it even begins.
So many things wrong with this idea. I'd hate for my to change a little and all of a sudden I'm locked out.
I guess you'd be able to replace one Office Space drone with another ("I usually come in about 15 minutes late, i use the side door that way lumberg can't see me, then i just kinda space out for about an hour.")
They're cutting the deadwood. It will get ugly, but that's where the execs earn their lavish compensation. Anyone worth their stock will not be touched. This is the most depressed economy since the 1920s. I expect tactics like this to be the norm for at least a decade. What are 25 million unemployed going to do, strike?
Look at history. When this happens bloody revolution is the norm. I hate violence. So I'd hope you're wrong.
You are in favour of global treaties rather than local action I'm guessing? I tend to agree, but we're headed off a cliff. Someone's got to start pressing on the brake - even if they're not in the driver's seat.
Not if it's the toy pretend brake the 2 year old in the back seat is using. Actually that analogy isn't sufficient. That would do nothing. This tax is harmful in other ways but does no good for the environment.
I don't know who said it but - It's like seeing a truck coming at you from a distance, do you start calmly taking one step at a time towards the curb, or do you wait until the last minute and then dive into the gutter?
Except the truck isn't off in the distance, it's already on top of you! It's too late to be calmly taking one step at at time towards the curb. And by the way walking out of the way of traffic doesn't lower your standard of living or your children's.
For example, want to reduce CO2 from transport? Well you better man transport unaffordable to the masses. Little changes won't work.
How about we make a far greener public transport system more affordable and practical?
Yeah that would be much better than setting up a paper shuffling government bureaucracy to manage a new tax as is being done now. I'm starting to get very pessimistic about whether any of these measures are enough though. Really what we need to do is throw away the fossil fuels and find real alternatives RIGHT NOW. Too much money coming in from them. Too hard a hit to take - no one's going to accept things grinding to a halt.
The birds are packed with clever behaviors that expand the user's mental model at just the point when game-level complexity is increased...
Translation: The game gets harder as you go along.
I think a better translation is: The game offers you more tools for solving problems as it gets harder. Still not earth-shattering, since many games do this, but you oversimplified.
I think this is over-complicating things frankly. More tools unlocked required as you proceed through harder levels of the game is as standard as it gets.
This game is ballistics with cute birds and pigs (and later versions other animals).
- The guys get it because its' basically 1 player scorched earth with a limited number of shots. Firing missiles and using slingshots appeals to boys and men.
- Girls get it because they like the cute little birds and pigs. Then you add seasons and it brings the whole social aspect in and she's thinking of christmas and valentines day
- Kids get it because the graphics are simple. Pigs and birds are easy for even a 2 year old to comprehend.
and then it took off as a meme. Something else just as good could have but by pure chance this did. Once it has momentum the meme feeds itself until it burns out and becomes old. Picking Angry Birds as being the standout ahead of time would have been impressive but this retrospective analysis is not.
Arrrgghhhhh! Grow up!!!! That is like dumping someone on a plot of land and telling them if they need a house they should just build it themselves. Not everyone is an architect, master builder, plumber, electrician etc. etc. Nor is everyone capable of writing their own file system software. This argument is not sane and I cannot believe that supposedly intelligent people have continued to make it for many decades now.
Most tariffs (tax on imports) have been very effective. Another example would be road tolls.
Actually, if your goal is to reduce consumption, it would be difficult to find a tax that is ineffective.
We need extreme reduction in CO2. That means severely curved lifestyle modifications. The idea of a tax that has minimal impact on people's wallets, as it has been sold here, is just fiction. For example, want to reduce CO2 from transport? Well you better man transport unaffordable to the masses. Little changes won't work.
Why do people always think that reducing the population requires some sort of genocide? You realize it's also possible to just have a birthrate below replacement level?
Then you end up with an aging population and a whole other kind of unsustainable misery.
As 60% of the energy usage is all the third-world countries, the answer is obvious.
I can guess what you're going to say, but no the answer is not obvious.
Short of a major disaster (worldwide epidemic, nuclear war, asteroid strike), none of which would benefit the planet in the long run, I don't see how we're going to recover. Here in Australia they just passed a carbon tax - as if we can just tax the problem away.
No, it is usual for people who frequent slashdot to hate companies and products that have made some portion of their life miserable. The hate is not random.

So you prefer to go on breeding without restriction
I certainly don't trust the governments of the world to do a better job than can be done by educating people and letting them decide.
Not likely that anyone can make the US military do anything it doesn't want. Keep in mind who has access to an essentially unlimited number of snipers.
So THAT's what's causing the population problem!
lol ok here you go. NSFW.
First website I ever bookmarked. I have waited for years to sneak that into a slashdot thread.
Glad I could provide an excuse to use it. You're lucky they didn't go out of business before you managed to.
That is fascinating, horrifying, and WTF! all at the same time.

We have to let the computer choose the password, and the human agree to memorize it. And it MUST be 4 words, not one, or three.
Five is *right* *out*.
That sounds like a sendup of a Monty Python skit.
I shudder to think how much porn I would need to watch before I can check my email.
Perhaps they'll incorporate biometrics of your private parts. Unzip, insert......."welcome mr todger, how may i assist you today".
Sounds worryingly Microsoft-ish.

acting becomes the hot new job area. Except the actors work for the Mafia now, not Hollywood.
Much as well all find some actors so annoying that we'd like to see them knee capped, I don't think so ;-)
I was measuring by lives prevented.
So your plan is to sign the WHOLE WORLD up to slashdot?
That place sure doesn't sound like anywhere I'd want to work, let alone keep any money in their stock.
-jcr
You might prefer it to you and your family starving though. That's the economy you're living in. Good people go without work.
They're cutting the deadwood. It will get ugly, but that's where the execs earn their lavish compensation. Anyone worth their stock will not be touched. There is NOTHING new here.
Just emulate it.
It's Linux. If you need it, build it.
Arrrgghhhhh! Grow up!!!! That is like dumping someone on a plot of land and telling them if they need a house they should just build it themselves. Nonsense. I've been watching people on slashdot trash things they know absolutely nothing about for something near a decade.
I come here for the ones that can call them out on it. :)
Well in that case you may wish to find something more constructive to do, like watch reality TV. You'll find much more bitching there.
I know it is the usual thing to hate on slashdot
No, it is usual for people who frequent slashdot to hate companies and products that have made some portion of their life miserable. The hate is not random.
