You say You have had problems getting things going. Everyone has. But to say that you cannot add a device unless Windows was pre-installed is wrong. I just finished upgrading my XP box with 2 NEW drives (80GB a piece), a New Geforce2 Video card, and replaced the onboard sound with a SB Audigy. I was up and running as soon as the system booted up.

Now, Tell me this would be possible if I were running ANY version of Linux on that machine.

Would it be possible? NO. It wouldn't. I like to use Linux, however stating that it is no trouble is just plain INACCURATE .

Oh, and the reason I made all these upgrades to the XP machine? I wanted to play Medal Of Honor.

This article states that more people are staying home, surfing the web, and basically shunning 'society' as a whole.

I think it is more accurate to say that people are creating their own worlds to 'live' in via the Net, e-mail, IM. No longer forced to go to the 'club' or 'bar scene', they are able to stay at home and interact on a level of THEIR choosing.

This is quite different from the days of past, where the "big' event was the local malt shop or the town dance. You can't have these types of events for fear of the drive by (because someone disagreed with someone else) shooting, the random rapes and murders. the people of 'society' today can no longer be as trusting as they used to be. There are too many 'bad people' out there. We all know it only takes one idiot with a gun and attitude to ruin an entirelky innocent affair.

So people choose to cocoon themselves in the comfort of their homes, creating virtual experiences (Which aren't necessarily 'virtual', because while they may not happen in PERSON, they do happen and therefore lend an experience) with others from the comfort of their chair. They can express their ignorance or brilliance in any way they choose (so why is it most tend towards the former rather than the latter?) and not feel fear of being hurt with anything other than WORDS.

It soon came to a point where the cable connection became worthless due to shared bandwidth, but I left it hooked up for 6 - 8 months just to use it sporadically. I never loaded the Not@home specific browser or utility programs (I did not even know what my email address was for Not@Home) and just used the connection.

I went to cancel and the CSR stated I had over 1200 emails. I told her I NEVER used this account, nor did I EVER give out the address as I did NOT KNOW IT. She stated that "sometimes this happens" and I had to clear out all the email before they could cancel the account. I asked for the login and password, and she said "None have been assigned to that account" They assigned one, I logged on, and proceeded to remove a years worth of SPAM. All of it addressed to the email address. NONE of the mail was worth the time it took to delete.

I ask that you refresh your standards, and follow the PUBLISHED standard of RED BOOK AUDIO:

Red Book defines the standards for audio CDs. Audio files are placed in one or more tracks on the CD, with each track normally holding one song. Tracks carry sectors that are 1/75th of a second in length, with each sector containing 2,353 bytes of audio information. Simple math tells us that 176,475 bytes of information are read per second.

The CD-DA (Compact Disc-Digital Audio) can hold up to 99 tracks, and has a maximum theoretical playing time of approximately 72 minutes. A Table of Contents at the beginning of each CD indicates the location of each track in minutes, seconds, and sectors. The Red Book specifies an error detection code and error correction code (EDC and ECC), to interpolate musical information when a disc that has been scratched or scuffed generates errors when read.

Not for choosing the "wrong" OS, but for not knowing enough about it to make it stable and a usable platform.
