You're being sarcastic, but sure, let's see how 'cost effective' flies with everyone when power plants blow themselves up, there' no water coming out of the tap, and everyones' bank accounts are drained, all at the same time.
This article, and the description of what they have to go through just to map a paltry 1x10^5 neurons (as compared to the 1x10^11 in a human brain), is an excellent example of one of the problems with understanding how a biological brain, like humans posess, produces phenomena like sentience, self-awareness, cognition, and real ability to think. For starters, they can't map it without killing the host first, because they have to dismantle the brain in order to map it. Furthermore, since a living brain is extremely fluid and dynamic in it's operating state, mapping it statically just gives you a snapshot, it doesn't show you all the dynamics of how it actually operates. If we want to be able to truly unlock the mysteries of how our own brain works, we need better instrumentality to give us the means to both map the neuronal connections and see the entire brain operating in realtime, without having to kill the host and dismantle the brain in the first place. Until then we're just shooting in the dark with the current approach to artificial intelligence, which is why it's so weak compared to a biological brain.
Probably not at this point, and they'd have to write it themselves from scratch, and almost guaranteed Microsoft would throw a fit if you could install it on ReactOS as-is. Microsoft will either sue the shit out of them, or if they can't for some reason they'll make sure none of their software will install on ReactOS by detecting it and telling you it's an 'invalid Windows version' or somesuch.
Merge? I guess that's one word for it. What I imagine is going to actually happen, assuming that is that ReactOS ever makes it to a full non-beta v1.0 release, is Microsoft will sue the daylights out of them, beating them into submission, then make part of the settlement deal that they absorb ReactOS entirely, and prohibit anyone from ever making a Windows clone again. Either that or they'll just issue a DMCA takedown notice for copyright violation, and more or less legally prohibit them from distributing it, or maybe seek indictments against the ReactOS creators for cybercrime violations. All the above even more so if you can install other Microsoft software (like Office) onto ReactOS and have it all work properly. All in all I'd like it if ReactOS was totally ignored and allowed to flourish, but knowing how Microsoft operates (based on past behavior) I can't see them sitting still for anyone creating a totally free compatible OS.
You know, Slashdotters, some time ago I started thinking that people were getting dumber as a whole over time instead of smarter, and I said so.
Then some time passed, and I came to another, worse realization: People have always been dumb, it's just that I'm starting to really notice it more now.
Memo to all businesses: YOU HAVE TO DO BETTER WITH THIS SHIT ONE WAY OR ANOTHER!
The current state of computer system security, all over the world so far as I can tell, is dismal. So far as I can tell from what I read and hear: criminal organizations, cyber-enabled terrorist organizations, cyber-operatives for foreign governments/foreign military, already have the ways and means to hack their way into any systems they choose, including critical infrastructure, government, and military systems; they're all just waiting for orders to attack. All the successful attacks you hear about every week? Those are just practice runs and small-time operations for pocket money and proofs-of-concept. Furthermore, as-is, anyone with a smartphone or 'IoT' devices, Internet-facing NAT routers, etc, are just as likely as not to already be part of someones' bot-net, even if the code is sitting dormant on it for now, waiting for commands from their C&C servers.
So the question is:How do we fix all this? Failure is NOT AN OPTION.
It's no longer about preventing attacks from happening, but accepting that they are going to happen
Bullshit. There's a word for what you're talking about: surrender. In 2018 people should be smarter and systems should be more secure, but for some reason they're not. This needs to be FIXED. Throwing up your hands and saying "Oh well, guess that's just the way it is!" is cowardly and idiotic in the extreme. If what you're saying was actually true then the only course of action anyone with an average IQ or above could logically take would be to pull all their money out of all accounts and keep it at home in a safe buried in the ground, or at least stashed in a safety deposit box at a bank, or similar hardened secure facility, and pay cash for everything, forever. Banks would fold, e-commerce would dry up and die, as we functionally went back to no later than the 1950's. It's bad enough that I see how many breaches of financial systems there are all the time and have had to personally resort to paying cash for everything I do in person (to reduce my overall exposure to risk) but to just give up is nonsense. We have to do better, we have to fix the security problems.
If you think I'm getting drawn into a pro-life versus pro-choice debate then you're completely wrong, that's about as smart as a land war in Asia. Bugger off.
I think the core of the argument boils down to 'what is and what is not human', and since this is new, the one side could easily use the 'looks like a duck, quacks like a duck, therefore it's a duck' argument; doesn't matter if you assembled it molecule by molecule, if it's indistinguishable from a naturally-occurring human zygote, then it's the same regardless, and (to follow the pro-lifer thought train) therefore it could be a 'vessel' for a human 'soul', and 'experimenting' on it is therefore an atrocity and a crime against God. Keep in mind the driving force behind the pro-life movement is the idea that humans need to have as many babies as possible, regardless of the consequences, so that all the souls in Heaven can be born. That's how these people think.
Did you not ever watch the Blade Runner movies? Replicants were obviously based on human DNA, but even if our biotechnology isn't at the level where we can create Replicants, we already have corporations that patent DNA sequences, even if they're naturally occurring, and GMO foods are most certainly patented and copyrighted, so how is it any stretch of the imagination at all that some company could take stock human genes, tweak them in specific ways, patent and copyright them, and since they're not 'born of woman', call them a 'product' and since they're sufficiently different genetically from humans, say they're 'not human beings'? Granted it would be the Supreme Court ruling of the millennia, but it's theoretically possible if our biotech reaches the level where we can do that. Note we're already at the level where 'designer babies' to one extent or another are possible, and it's just mere laws and ethics that are preventing it from happening (assuming that somewhere in China, for instance, it's not already happening).
Science is all about learning how the world works and testing it if you can.
Not that AC you're referring to, but there's this: Scientists come up with all sorts of interesting discoveries and developments and think nothing of it. But then two different types of asshole get wind of whatever it is science has come up with; one of them thinks "I wonder how much money I can make off that?", and the other thinks "I wonder what sort of awesome weapon of war I can use that for?". That's when shit starts going horribly, horribly wrong, because the first guy creates and markets some product without any forethought about what the consequences of it might be (and subsequently skimps on any product safety testing, because he can), and the second guy literally doesn't care so long as he gets a big military contract to produce whatever weapon it is (or he isthe military, and rationalizes any possible negative consequences as worth it for 'National Security' reasons, or 'our enemies would use this without a second thought' reasons).
Haven't you all heard? The Earth is only 6000 years old, and why should any of you silly people care about some dumb animals anyway? God gave them and the Earth to us to do with as we please, and the Apocalypse and the Rapture and shit is all coming Real Soon Now, so Zombie Jesus will return from the dead a second time to take the Faithful home, so the Earth, it's environment, and all living things on it that aren't humans won't matter! So FUCK 'endangered species', we all need to just make as much money as we can while we can so we can weather the Apocalypse and the Rapture, keep ourselves and our families safe from the ravening hoardes of Unbelievers, so that when Zombie Jesus shows up we can pull up in our armored personnel carriers, all ready for Him to take us back to Heaven! Haven't any of you been paying attention?
You think I'm kidding. You think I'm making this shit up. These idiots are REAL, they really believe in the Second Coming, they really believe the Earth is going to be destroyed anyway, and by itself you could dismiss them as nutjobs, but they have accumulated wealth and socio-political power, and they'll use it to hurry along the Apocalypse, because they actually believe that'll trigger the Second Coming, so they can bug out and be taken back to Heaven, or whatever the fuck it is they think they're getting out of it -- and they don't give a shit about us plebian average people, only them and their own people, and silly nonsense like 'endangered species' is just a drain on their profit-making ability.
Think this through: the alternative is for, say, the U.S. to clandestinely start building a military installation on the Moon starting NOW, and when discovered lay claim to the entire Moon, forbidding all others to go there. Meanwhile we'd be starting World War 3 over it because everyone would protest. Replace 'U.S.' with any country and the result is the same. The Moon has to be for everyone or for no one at all. The strategic importance of it is literally astronomical. That's why.
If we established a colony on the Moon the mining of it would be 100% necessary for building materials and other resources, and by the way why would it matter? It doesn't have an ecosphere to disrupt or destroy, it's got no atmosphere, and in fact there is research and industry that could be conducted much more safely on the Moon than on Earth. Also there is so I hear much Helium-3 on the Moon, and that might be useful for fusion reactor power generation (if we ever get the details of that figured out).
Mainly some ambitious country making the Moon a military installation to hold the rest of the Earth hostage from. Go read The Moon Is A Harsh Mistress.
You clearly didn't bother to read or understand what I wrote, did you? They can have a base there all they want -- so long as it's not miliary, and so long as they don't claim to own the WHOLE MOON. That clear enough for you?
Because I'm intellectually offended at SDC fanbois who swallow the media hype and other associated bullshit when I know damned well the entire approach to AI they're using for this and many other things is no different than it was in the 90's and is clearly not up to the task, should not be allowed to be used where human lives will be lost because of it. You can believe all the hype and bullshit all you like but I'm not fooled.
Post your PhD's in cybernetics and your directly witnessed accounts of all this testing to back up what you're saying. Nothing you said is based on verifiable facts, it's all just your 'beliefs' because you're an SDC fanboi and are 'believing' what they're feeding you. Meanwhile I know damned well these shitty excuses for AI aren't up to being responsible for human lives and would rather WALK than ever trust one because I know the technology is more hype than it is reality, they're desperate to make money off this because they'll be bankrupted otherwise at this point. That's okay I've got lots of "I told you so's" to go around when it all falls apart.
Oh goodie, we're 'less than a year away' from senseless deaths at the hands of shitty machines that should never have been allowed on public roads in the first place. That means only about a year or less from them being banned for public safety reasons and companies like Waymo being sued out of existence. Good!

If 5G needs millimeter-wave antennas, does that mean it would be possible to very accurately triangulate your 5G phones' position between towers?

Heh, 100% correct, 99.99999+% sure Slashdot is hosted on a linux-powered web server.
