I still don't understand why everyone here bitches and moans whenever a hardware vendor drops Linux from their lineup on certain items. Linux is not and will not (atleast anytime soon) be the choice of the road wariors who buy laptops by the truck loads. Its really quite easy to see that certain operating systems are better for some tasks than others, Linux is not ready for desktop market.

Step back and look at it before writing this off as a troll. You're a geek, you're one of the few. Most people who buy laptops buy them because they're on the move, running between business meetings and such. They've not got the time to deal with learning Linux or other OSS OSes.

Stick to what you do best, keep those servers churning while letting the desktop slip; its not your strong market.

Unlike the majority of the Linux distributions, zero settings are lost when upgrading. Upgrade routes are painless and don't leave you with an entirely different system than when you began. With mergemaster you're presented diffs between your current configuration and the new one, you can merge them line by line picking out the changes you don't want, or simply install the new one. Fearing a FreeBSD update is pointless, the process is painless and simple.

Hand written code is really a bitch. All of my CS tests in coding classes have had rather large coding poritions to them. While I understand there's very few ways to show that you indeed know how to code, University CS programs shouldn't focus on a language.

If the professor grades the hand written code solely on the logic rather than symantics then I agree that hand written coding tests are acceptable. However often this isn't the case. If you're testing on the language its only fair to offer these tests in a real world situation, one where you can run the code through a compiler a few times and find your errors which are bound to happen.

The mentality of "I don't like it and nobody else should" is exactly the mindset found on the playgrounds of elementary schools. I really think you're on to something here.

That's it. I've lost complete faith in Slashdot as a news source. A major release of FreeBSD doesn't make it to the front page, yet a patch level to the development Linux kernel does? The only people interested in a patch to the development kernel are those who are actively following kernel development and this is hardly news to them.

Its obvious that this entire site is driven by promoting Linux and downing all others. Submit an article concerning an opensource IRC client being back doored and you'll get rejected. Submit a post concerning a security hole in IIS which was patched 18 months prior and you'll be front page news.

While I understand that Opensource is a driving factor behind this site, the title is still "Slashdot : News for Nerds. Stuff that Matters". I move to have this changed to "Slashdot: News for biased Linux nazis, stuff that doesn't matter".
