  1. Re:Or use Kanji on Is Simplified Spelling Worth Reform? · · Score: 1

You've touched on the biggest problem with spelling reform, which is that it has to be re-done every hundred years or so to keep things spelled phonetically. Most words in English are spelled in a way that made phonetic sense at the time their spelling was standardized. In places where spelling reform is the norm, you have to not only re-publish, but entirely re-write anything from previous generations that you want the current generation to be able to read. Without standardized spelling, any written work of our great-grandparent's day that wasn't considered important enough to entirely re-write with the updated spellings of words would essentially be lost to the world, even if it's sitting on your bookshelf now.

If we could manipulate gravity today, we still wouldn't have flying cars. Several practical working models of flying cars already exist. (http://www.labicheaerospace.com/ and http://www.firebox.com/?dir=firebox&action=product &pid=415)But imagine the dificulty of avoiding mid-air collisions if even half the traffic on the streets in a mid-size to large city were flying around town instead. Without any existing roadways, lanes, signals, etc. We have a hard enough time avoiding accidents WITH all of those restrictions, and on the ground to boot. You'll see flying cars catch on a few years after the market gets comfortable with purely autopilot vehicles, with which the only user interaction is inputing a destination and hitting "go".

Free stuff is nice, but if the world is made up of nothing but free stuff there would be a whole lot more unemployed people.

If the world were made up of nothing but free stuff, you wouldn't need money for anything, so employment (or lack thereof) wouldn't be a very big deal anymore.

  4. Re:Not broken for normal gaming, that's the point on NVidia Accused of Inflating Benchmarks · · Score: 1

If you will read Futuremark's statement on the issue, which was the second link in the original slashdot story, you will notice that they have determined exactly which routines trigger variant behavior in certain versions of nVidia's drivers, with certain cards. They made trivial changes in the binary code of these routines, which resulted in certain nVidia cards having their overall score drop by as much as 24.1%, while the overall scores of other cards tested varied by less than 3%. At the end of the article, they do point out that ATI's drivers show a larger than average drop in one specific test after the binary is modified, and that they suspect that ATI is also using a cheat on that particular test. So nVidia is going a bit more sophisticated than just checking the name of the .EXE file, but changing the file to avoid their detection routine does yeild noticibly different results.

He's talking about the clock crystal that provided the timing for the device in question. They are usually packaged in a metal housing with 2, 3, or 4 connectors. The 2 or 3 connector versions tend to be shaped more or less like a cylinder, and are frequently called "Cans" because that is basically what they look like.

  6. Re:Imagine That on Music Biz Predicts 6% Decline in '03 · · Score: 1

I believe the article cites a 6% decrease, which is somewhat different than a smaller than usual increase, and could be cause for concern. However, I think they are way off base in blaming piracy exclusively for the decline.

  7. Games, and a few other Apps. on What's Keeping You On Windows? · · Score: 1

I need windows for most of the applications I use at work. At home, I have 1 windows box and 1 dual boot Windows/Linux box. The straight windows box is my gaming machine, though I also use PaintShop Pro for graphichs work on it. My dual boot machine only has windows for 2 reasons: 1, there is no linux support for my scanner; 2, I prefer Nero to any linux-based CD-recording package I've yet seen. Both of these devices are hooked to the dual boot machine because I don't have SCSI in the gaming box.

  8. Wonder if this would work for.... on Convert Unneeded VRAM Into A Storage Device · · Score: 1

I wonder if I could get this to work with memory from a Soundblaster AWE 32? I have an old 486 that I use, and the sound card can slot up to 32MB, which is as much memory as the system itself has. If I could use that as swap space, it should be much faster than swap space on the harddrives.
