  3. Out the box Linux+Oracle on Oracle Switching To Linux · · Score: 2, Insightful

Is it just me, or is anyone else interested in being able to slap an Oracle based distro install CD in a drive, hitting yes a few times, getting a coffee, coming back and having an oracle server ready for them?

I'm a developer, not a DBA. The companies I have worked at (web development agencies) did not need a DBA. They did development, not support/maintenance. I've been er, lucky enough, to install Oracle 8i on Solaris, Redhat, NT and Win2k. Anyone else who doesn't like the first page of the install notes ("Recompiling the kernel for shared memory semaphores") will know the problems I mean. It's *hard* to install. Give me an ISO that installs right, is secure and runs Oracle right would not only get my firms cash, but it would also help establish Oracle+Linux as a solution.

I think Larry needs to turn some of his Charisma onto this sort of thing personally.

  4. Silly Silly Silly on AOL vs. Trillian · · Score: 1

If AOL continue like this they will lose the battle for IM supremacy.

I used to run three clients, even four sometimes, which between them managed to consume about 15MB of RAM and confuse the shit out of me with CTRL-Return in some and Return in others to just send the damned message.

I installed Trillian the other day and think it's superb. Now I have a common interface, I've free'd up 10MB of RAM and I dont have to open and close three windows just to see if a certain friend is online.

Since Trillian removes the IM specific client from the equation, me and my mates really dont care which service we use as long as we can chat together, and if that means dumping AOL then so be it. Trillian seem to be responding to their uses requests for certain features, and they also manage to keep the bloat down. Keep up the good work, and if you can't interface with em, fuck em; they'll fall by the wayside eventually...
