Exactly! I know how to drive my car, but when it breaks, I take it to the mechanic. Jane Secretary shouldn't need in-depth knowledge of her computer; that's my job, not hers.
Very true! I recently lost my job as a COBOL programmer. Well, technically, I still have my job, but I am (or will be) a Java programmer instead. I probably would have been lost if I hadn't read some Java books beforehand, and fiddled some with C++ at home on my own time.
Slackware is an excellent distro, but I had to do some fiddling to get everything working right. It's great for me, but I know a great many people who wouldn't even consider anything they had to fiddle with, especially at the command line. If Mandrake can fix its quality control problems, it could be a great non-geek distro.
Currently, I don't use Mandrake. I tried 8.1, but it booted to a "black screen of death". However, it has several things going for it. It's aimed for the newbie, which Linux, IMO, needs. And it's oriented for the community, rather than the corporation. Odds are good that I'll try 8.2, and if I use it, I'll put my money where my mouth is. "Free Beer" doesn't pay the bills.
"Yes, this is exactly what it's all about: either we catter to community, and community pays, or we catter to big busines, and big busines pays.
RedHat and SUSE already catter to big corporations, and I would even say that Debian does that too (to a certain extent). Do you want to loose Mandrake as it is now, or do you want to see us continue cattering to your needs?
Deno (who is in Hanover now, and forgot the pass)
It's up to you.."
There's a significant number of web sites that look like crap with Konqueror, but good in Mozilla. Also, AFAICT, there's no Find Next in Konq: all the searches seem to start from the top of page regardless of where the cursor is.
Big business is ok if there are a lot of them, and if they are competing against each other (not co-operating against the little guy). Unfortunately, what we have these days is a few HUGE businesses, buying each other up, and making deals with each other to the detriment of small businesses, employees, customers. And buying the government.

That's my postion too. The money isn't a big factor, and I'd be willing to pay for/., but I won't use PayPal, and I don't want to keep track of "page-views". I'm currently not blocking ads, but if they become annoying, I'll either block them, or leave.
There's also the matter of scale. There are only 100+ elements, and about a dozen are man-made. There are millions of distinct species, none of which are man-made (yet), and many of which are in remote areas (7 miles under the sea for one).
Ligers and jackasses aren't viable species; they're sterile. Barring accident or disease, that kid across the street with a black dad and white mom can, and probably will breed.
I've actually clicked on 2 of K5's ads. I NEVER click on ads. Not only did they not piss me off, but they were kinda interesting. And one of them (an ad for Woody CD's) would fit well with/.
Is ALFS anywhere near useable? I had the impression that it was mostly experimental. The main problem I have with LFS is that I don't really have enough HD space for 2 full-blown distros, but if I could get a fully functioning ALFS desktop with KDE & mozilla in hours (instead of days or weeks), I could use a bare-bones distro to build it with.
How does Gentoo compare to Sorcerer or LFS? There's no way I can compile Sorcerer on my box, and the problem with LFS is that I need 2 distros on a limited amount of HD space. Is Gentoo easier on the resources?
But, what happens when the demonstrators are NOT violent, merely loud? Should TPTB be allowed to remove dissenting voices from the camera mikes while they just pose and fool the TV watching public into thinking everything is ok?

Have you seen the average progammers desk? Are you telling me you trust HIM to take out the trash?! He needs maid service (Java).
I've never actually used it. I know it's very strongly typed, which I think is good. Judging by an old book I have on Ada83, it is quite verbose, but probably no worse than COBOL (yes, I'm an old guy).

Reposting his post so I lose mod points.
What about Perl 5.7.3?

China won't use Linux because they're for freedom, they'll use it because they think Windows is spyware.
Sorry, but I find that hard to believe! Admittedly, I'm still a rank beginner in Java, but I can't believe that 12 year figure.

K5 has its good points, but it's light on geek stuff. Unless that changes, it certainly can't replace /.

1. Yes, I've fallen on ice many times with no injuries, but my GF once broke her wrist on ice. It's all how you happen to land.
2. You might not get hurt when you fall, but what about when the 250 pound guy behind you falls on you?

"After 1.0, the plan should be quite definite, and hopefully at least as static as any given .doc file generated by MS Word."
Is that supposed to make us feel better?

After all, they're used to slippery conditions.

Actually, since he said "a little above average" that would be a C+. But I guess that's the wrong language.
