My understanding is that.NYET based languages all have the same capabilities as C#. Anything they can do better is implemented poorly or not at all. And the JVM can support non-Java languages too (JPython). I agree that we can't afford to ignore.NYET since its being pushed by the 800 pound gorilla, but it's not better than Java.
Potato was badly outdated from day 1. One gripe is that it doesn't have KDE, which BTW is far more stable than the ancient version of Gnome in Potato. I agree that Debian should release more often, but they apparently never will. I don't think many Debian developers even use Potato, so they're not really using what the average user does.
Unfortunately, all 3 Debian branches have problems. One branch smells of stale potatoes and doesn't even include KDE, one branch takes 2 weeks to get security updates, and the last branch has the latest/greatest, but if you apt-get at the wrong time, you can royally break your system.
I've never used PayPal and I don't intend to. If I have any trouble with my own bank, not only is there a number to call, with people who are actually helpful, but there's a brick-and-mortar building I can walk into, with real people. If I have trouble with my Credit Card, I have confidence that I can phone them and get the trouble cleared up. I have no such assurances with PayPal, and I've heard more than enough bad things that I will steer clear of them.
One advantage of Linux is that it ISN'T a monoculture. If you write a virus/worm/exploit for OutHouse Express, you know it's on all 200 million Doze machines. If you write an exploit for Konqueror, it won't bother that RedHatter with the "KDE sux" tee-shirt. Depending on the software installed, a RedHat specific worm might not do diddly to a Slack box.
1. Our founding father revolted at much lower rates than 24%.
2. Armed revolt is clearly a VERY last resort. No sane[1] person would advocate any such thing for the simple reason that we still have alternatives. If enough people had a PEACEFUL revolt against government tyranny[2], the govt would backtrack so fast, you'd hear a sonic boom.
[1] Obviously, there's people who are NOT sane.
[2] I know, it's not going to happen. Not enough people's oxen are being gored. Yet.
There's a big difference between spotting someone in a mall/bank/7-11 and being able to track someones every move. What happens when Ashcroft's cameras spot you among people thought to be a "national threat" (tm). What's to stop them from following you, and possibly harassing you, even though your only crime was having questionable associates. And if you trust the Bush admin not to step over the line, will you have similar confidence in 2004 when (God forbid) we get Hillary Clinton in there?
Unlike Dos, W95 isn't a single-tasking OS. There's crap running in the background that makes it LESS stable than Dos. And there's a big difference between a POS Dos system (used for sales) and a POS (piece of $h!t) W95 medical system. Finally, perhaps the reason the tech was trained to ignore error messages is because Windows throws them all the time.
My biggest concern with SF is, it puts a lot of eggs into one, possibly fragile, basket. I'd recommend having a backup solution available and being ready to move quickly if it becomes neccesary.
I've never used any voice recog system, but I read of someone using it with a word processor to dictate a memo. While doing so he greeted two co-workers "Hi, Nick and Ben" and the word processor dutifully wrote "Hi, naked men"

All I know is that I used to have NT4 on a 64M box at work. It sucked! I currently have Linux on my 64M box at home. KDE2 is no speed demon, but it's still faster than NT4. I'd guess that ex-pee would be fatter and slower than NT4.
Do you mean the tampons that just happen to come up in conversation, the itch cream for the rash one of the characters happened to get, the SUV parked outside the NYC apartment? If I can come up with ideas, how hard could it be for someone who earns big bucks for marketing to place their product in shows?
I agree. There's no way to MUTE or FF past ads that are part of the show itself. Futhermore, they can target viewers more effectivly - it's hard to put a feminine hygene product in an James Bond movie, but how many viewers would be interested anyway?! I'd be more interested in the kewl car 007 was driving with the brand name prominently visible.
Actually, even neutral ads might get watched. Assuming I've been to the bathroom and gotten my munchies, I might be to lazy to hit MUTE (or FF if its a recorded show), but as soon as a commercial annoys me, I silence it quick! That happens pretty often despite my laziness.
"So go ahead and get your awesome saleman and sell your pig shit, but that same farmer won't buy your cow shit when Mr. Salesman comes knocking a year later, and then you're shit out of luck, so to speak."
If your salesman is good enough to convince your farmer that this years cow shit is better than last years pig shit, you might be able to sell it. And if you're lucky, you can get him to upgrade to horse shit next year. After all, it works for Windows. Much as I hate to admit it, the sales force is neccesary.
One of the best supervisors I worked for was a medocre programmer. He hadn't done any coding for decades, and was more comfortable with "boss-speak" than "tech-speak". But, he made sure that he knew what was going on, and when he needed a technical answer from someone, he knew who to ask. Programming skill is not essential for a manager; in fact I've known some sharp programmers who sucked as managers. A programming supervisor should either know enough about the field to know what is or isn't a resonable request, or know who to ask and be willing and able to trust him/her.

Linux - needs a 386 or better
Dos - can run on that 8088 you're using to hold your screen door open
Linux - complicated
Dos - simple
Linux - multitasking
Dos - single tasking, which usually sux, unless you're playing a game and don't want that slowdown from background jobs.
FreeDos is never going to replace Linux, but it can go places Linux can't.
Sounds familiar! I had an old Pac-Man game with my 8088, and my scores went to he** when I got a 386. I didn't even try to play it on the 486!

Yeah, but you'd better bail out when Guido gets friendly with the cop.

I have! But if I can't be home, I record it. If the media industry interferes with my ability to do so, I won't see anything.

Yeah, Linus's greased-turkey gave me indigestion.
