Usually I go through periodically and unsubcribe the ones I can. The volume then goes down for a couple weeks, so it is worth it.

Often, however, the unsubscribe links don't even display a page, much less get me unsubscribed. Porn spam is actually one that I have noticed DOES work more often. I started getting porn spam at work, and being one of the network admins, told the other guys that I would be going to porn spam site to unsubscribe, and they actually worked. That was 1 1/2 months ago, no more porn spam.

...People do. I love the technoloigy I work with (sysadmin), and while it is frusrating at times, it is a good kind of frustration (generally). Solving problems that arise often is a good feeling.

I have a cell phone, that I do not answer if it is work because they are not supposed to have it... They give me a pager for that. Which often doesn['t work becuase they go with the cheapest they can find in terms of price and quality.

People I deal with at work and in life, however, cause most of the stress in my life. If you work for an idiot, whether in technology or not, it is VERY stressful.

Going into a job if they tell you that they are giving you a cell phone and pager and you are on call, THAT creates the stress, not the technology.

Saying that technology causes stress is like saying that mp3 (the format) causes music piracy.

This was a few years ago, but my friends and I set up what we called the Diablo test. Diablo 1 loaded mostly off the cd and was a very small hard drive install.

THE TEST: We set up machines that were almost identical, one with SCSI and one with IDE with similar configs (as possible) of the disk. The SCSI cd-rom was a quad, and the IDE a 6X. It took 30 seconds to load a level on the 6X IDE system and 4 seconds to load on the quad SCSI system...

    Draw your own conclusions.

It may be that IDE is getting faster, but SCSI is as well. The ONLY advantage IDE has is price. End of story.

  13. This is being done or discussed widely on Universities Taken Offline to Fight Worms, Viruses · · Score: 3, Interesting

At the University I work at, this year they are just restricting resnet students from running what are deemed "Server" services on ports below 1024, such as shared drives or telnet dameons. However, above 1024, the students can run whatever services they want, so the ones who know what they are doing will run ssh up there. Also, the school has central servers that can run things (like web pages) for the students that are quite sufficent (speaking as a former student).

Next year, however, there is discussion of implementing something like checking all the dorm machines before they are allowed on the network... We have 40,000 undergrad students, so if even 1/4 are living on campus that will be quite a chore, but it is being discussed, and will happen.

One of the computing directors even told me the only reason it wasn't done this year was because they could not get the cd's for staff cut in time. I just want to know where they are going to get the army of staff that would be needed on Labor day weekend to do this.

  15. Voting for Gore out of Fear on Should You Vote? · · Score: 1

I am a Pagan... I believe in things that are not standard religions. Realistically, in this election, there are only 2 candidates... As much as I wish this were not true, it is.

I am voting for Gore. It is not a vote for Gore on my part, but a vote against Bush. Bush has said that he supports Freedom of Religion, but that Wicca (witchcraft, as he calls it) is not a religion. Wicca is, I believe, the largest pagan religion. It scares me to think that this man could be in a position to appoint SEVERAL Supreme Court Justices, and effectively change every major decision that has been made in the most recent decades.

Religion is not just the only issue... I would not personally want a significant other of mine to have an abortion, BUT sometimes it is neccisary... Bush does not even believe in it in cases of rape or incest... And by being in a position to appoint Supreme Court Justices, he can change things to his way.

Supreme Court Justices are selected for life or until they choose to retire... So even if Bush gets in and out in 4 years, we will be stuck with any of his appointees long after he leaves office. So I am voting for Gore, even though I hate to do it, but I have to, just to try to keep Bush out of office.

  16. wrongfully accused due to convenience on Slashdot Meets The Pinkerton Corp. · · Score: 1

When I was in HS, I was wrongfully accused of something because it was convenient to someone.

Someone I was aquainted with was busted for having drugs on school property. He was asked to name names of other people who used drugs... I was named, when I had done nothing wrong. I was then taken from class, questioned for an hour, and then excluded from school until I had a drug test... All on my mothers graduation from grad school day. It not only affected me, but my family on what should have been a very happy day.

The next day, after taking the test, I was allowed back into my small high school. All my teachers knew what I had been accused of, and everywhere I went in that building, teachers were watching me. The students all heard about it. They were all watching me. My family all knew about it. I still get comments to this day.

Now, that was an accusation of convenience... What is going to happen when kids get rewarded for turning in other kids?

When it comes down to getting something for free, in this society, kids will turn in even friends. Some of them will do it maliciously. Some will do it out of spite. Some will do it because they think it is the cool think to do. But the point is that kids WILL be turned in who would never harm a fly.

The proposed system will not only not work, but it will move this society into an age of freedom at a price... If your opinions aren't the norm, you WILL be persecuted.
