If you can get access to a database, its pretty reasonable that other things on these systems can be accessed such as memory and network interfaces where data is in transit. Both GLX and DRI use the same API so its not a big problem. Part of the difficulty is with X.org itself and its bad management, in that this is not made clearer and easier, and their failure to continue to maintain GLX.
I have thought of doing an OpenBSD router of some sort. The idea of having a full blown computer as a router does seem to be a bit overkill for me. This brings up an interesting question. Why have we not seen more router devices with all of the hardware a router needs built in, including ethernet ports, but which is designed to make it easy for the user to install their own open source/free OS on of their choice such as *BSD or Linux. Or does such a thing already exist? yes I know some people work oin getting their own OS to run on off the shelf routers, but for many its just more trouble than its worth to try to get an OS to work with router hardware that may not work smoothly with the OS due to lack of driver support.

Wrong, again, wrong. The client is supposed to fallback to indirect GLX rendering when the DRI is not available. If applications are not doing so, then we have a problem with poorly designed applications.
This is oh so incorrect and wrong. The fact is modern X servers DO support and facilitate network transparency and applications are supposed to be written to use that. An application should be written to use Xrender for alpha compositing, the application should prepare it's graphics locally and then upload them to the server. If the server is on the same system as the client, the client should detect if MIT-SHM is available and use that. If MIT-SHM is not available the application should fall back to uploading images the regular way with XImage. The only reason an application would not be network transparent is if the application itself is improperly written and does not provide the fallback in the case MIT-SHM is not available. So you are talking about something that is a bug due to badly written applications that do not follow proper conventions.
Mono cannot allow an easy path to allow code written for .NET to run on Linux when it does not support major parts of .NET, the presentation foundation. This severely limits portability as well as functionality for developers. Few developers will care about Mono as a result.
This is another lost opportunity for Linux operating systems. By Linux operating systems i do not mean OSs with a Linux kernel, which is not a real Linux OS, but one that has the full standard userland as well. I believe many of the main Linux developers have themselves to blame for the failure to capitalize on Microsoft's ineptness. This especially includes failing to realize that hardware support is the big thing that holds up Linux being a viable Windows replacement and the fact that accepting the fact we need to make it easy for users to use Binary drivers and provide a stable ABI for binary drivers. Instead Kernel developers lie through their teeth. One lie is that drivers in the kernel source tree are better than binary drivers. Yet there is a long list of binary drivers that perform much better than the ones in the kernel source tree. Another is that its reasonable to ask hardware vendors to provide open source drivers, when in fact many cannot because they license their driver source from third parties, furthermore, hardware companies cannot be expected to make huge concessions to Linux communities when the user share is still small. The fact is many hardware vendors will never open source and no amount of wishful thinking will change that. Linux people who think that somehow its a privelege for hardware vendors to develop drivers for Linux and will make huge concessions to do so are fooling themselves, if anything, they are doing us a favor and we would have to convince them to do so, including by having a well documented driver API.
The lack of a well documented driver API is a serious problem itself. Part of the problem is the fact Kernel developers practice what are generally regarded as poor habits by failing to document their code and properly document interfaces. Microsoft has better driver API documentation than Linux. I have looked into the documentation myself and it is extremely hard to find any. Most companies will just throw up their arms and not continue if they cannot find clear documentation. They are clearly not going to root around some kernel hackers source code to try to backengineer the API from the source code.

I see no problem with allowing telcos to replace analog POTS with new fiber lines as long as they provide basic telephone service under the same prices as previously, and they at no charge provide a POTS to fiber node at the customer premises for all existing customers with landline service, and are still required to lease lines as under the 1996 Telecommunications Act. Verizon i know already installs a fiber to POTS node at the customer premises on FIOS, as do cable companies, so the customer can keep on using their POTS phones and wiring. The concerns you have could be addressed if the telcos were simply required to operate a local exchange for the fiber digital network within say 20 miles of the subscriber, not really something that is too difficult. I cant imagine why they would want to do otherwise, as operating a local exchange saves network capacity.
I have POTS from my cable company through a digital coax to POTS adapter so I can keep my home phones, fax, etc, and be able to have family conversations due to being able to hook up many telephones to the same line. I actually think people should have landline if they can for E911 services.
To ask telcos to operate both a POTS system and a fiber system would be unreasonable and absurd.

Thats a total non issue, you turn off COW on those devices, or anywhere its not wanted. Duh? I would fully expect that COW should be an optional feature, in fact, it probably wouldnt be used until you turn it on by creating a restore point, snapshot, ot something such as that.
