Actually, to be a true hacker, one would make it as efficient as possible. In this case, you'd make it a 3x3 image and enlarge it with the image tag in the web page. For example this page
In addition to these links, I seem to remember seeing something on this very topic on that Beyone 2000 show that was on cable many moons ago. They were talking about the glass cleaning efforts needed by the crew of the Queen Elisabeth II, and how this technology was partialy developed for use on the QE2.
I remember seeing something like this for FAX modems once. You had access to the groups collection of FAX modems world-wide if you placed your fax machine into the pool for others to use. It gave you free (local call from the remote FAX modem) FAXing service in thousands of cities. I can't remember the name of this project, but it's possible.
I think the customers of @home need to take a serious look at a more reliable system of internet connectivity than the TCP-IP over Excite@Home. The IP over Avian Carrier (RFC1149) may just do the trick.
I think they should just move the WHOIS database off shore. Then those idiots in Congress would have no authority over it. Wouldn't that be funny to see them cry over that?

I see that no one has mentioned the GPL perl script Perlfect www.perlfect.com. It's a very capable search engine including PDF search. Check it out.
Build it; if it becomes popular enough, they will write a virus for it.
Close... Build it; Cram it down everyone's throat because it is part of the OS, and they will write a virus for it.
